A way to make people travel again.

Even with the recall/gate limitations (i think i personally find odd at best) we all know that people travels around the land as little as possible and when they do they usually run at lightspeed - unless they are carrying over a greater snail.

Sometimes someone suggests to add even more constraints to recall but imo this would just make travellers run more.

Going back to the past i remember that i used to wander around with my fighter not because i had no magery but because along the roads i could always find some Ettin or an Orc mage or an Ogre... big fight, great money, challenge.

So, what about some "challenges in the wild"?

Nothing extremely odd or complicate, just a little fiction and bait.

For example, i think that if town criers started to yell "Abyss patrol send by the Slasher of Veils spotted in the wild, Captain XYZ requesting help" and then this npc tells you that the enemy might be luring along the road from Trinsic to Britain we could have a lot of players on the road again. Or in some swamp.

And it couldn't be limited to fighters. Some drunk npc elf lost in the minoc's tavern may tell you for a pint of ale that a magical oak tree somewhere in the forest near yew is known to drop frost logs when chopped.

Would it work?

Someone had suggested something simular to this before, a mini or localised quest that spawns in a ner by town as there are some bandits/orcs/whatever thingys causing issues.

I think its a great idea and would add some more to the in game immesion. But then I would love to see Britian back to what it was before AoS came out. Lots of people mingling and talking and helping each other.

But yes I digress, I love the idea and DEV's, please could this be added!!

Not quite what the op had in mind I don't think.

Honesty has ppl running all around the coast line alt+shifting to find items...

I like the op's idea, and I know I read somewhere else someone said something similar about cracks in the mountains and such.

Make traveling fun and interesting again, good idea!

I think they tried not only with the honesty items but with the sadly very buggy Gypsy genocide which ended...

Perhaps the Honesty thing is a second idea to help bring folk back to actually exploring the lands.

The only thing I learned from my attempt at gaining honesty was I feel somewhat like the Native American weeping over the garbage strewn all over the land.

There is a TON of garbage left from housing that has fallen or other bugs... statues litter the lands everywhere, paintings, watertroughs, stew, stretched hide parts, and numerous other objects.

Doing towns will not get people to travel the land, they will recall to crier get town name and just recall to that town/city. Make something like the DIRT SPOTS that when you cross them ANTS show up. Use something like this to place a "spawn rune" in a random location that when you cross it it spawns a group to fight. These will have to be worth people to do or they will not do them. The criers could be used to give a hint to maybe what part of the wourld these may be in, but make it general like "A horde has been spotted NW of Brit."

I was wandering around Yew prison the other day. I had never been there and thought I'd have a look. I noticed a prison wagon parked out front.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could capture a red and he had to be transported in the prison cart to the prison by a super mob Britanian guard? You could have a gang ambush the cart on the road somewhere and if you kill the boss you free your comrade. If you can't kill the boss or your mates don't show up to break you out you get delivered to the prison and do 24 hours of hard labor.

By the way, my idea of hard labor would be to have the murderer locked in stocks in a random trammel town so people in trammel could taunt and throw vegetables at the offender (think snow balls that look like rotten tomatoes).

The account owner could log in to the character and could speak, but would be unable to move or act in any way for the twenty four hours he is on display in Trammel. His character would be in the stocks whether he was logged in or not.

That would be fun

I like the idea but I am going to put it this way.. Roleplay..

If people want to travel more so often or visit other towns there is nothing stopping their character from going to town to town.. Nothing is stopping you if you want to see more people out there.

Travel.. Interact.. Help others, perhaps look out for roleplay guilds who are trying to accomplish player run-towns. We have a lot here on Europa, one of the few regional RP shards.. There is more to UO than its game mechanics.. :)

Reminds me of the time I was at Buc Den a few years ago, I can't even remember why I was there, probably just passing through since I never have business there.

But I was running around a Jungle area just east of the lower island or something to that end, and I bumped into a Demon and possibly a couple of Dragons.

I found afterwards they were likely remnants of a T-Map, but I didn't realise this at the time and was kinda excited at the find, and proceeded to have some fun slaying them.

They need some bad-ass mofo's spawning randomly in the Wilderness, in the deep jungles south of Trinsic, and out north-east of Vesper & Yew. Maybe even a group, which are randomly allocated 1 of 10 or 20 possible scripted herd routes, so they have a chance of being seen passing by or over public roads (I can imagine "Guards!" scenario's could become an issue for the latter).

Gimme some reason to run out there and find something. Definitely, don't even limit it to monsters for the PvM guys, anything to get people exploring the stale forests.

No one really runs out there to slay two Harpies and a few Trolls and Ogre's scattered about, that I know of -_-

Edit: I probably sound biased towards hi-end creatures, simply because Item advances/imbuing and stuff is creating more and more ease for vets in the so called hardest dungeons. So for the newcomers to UO, I'd stress there can be danger in the wilderness, but there can also be equivalent types of Monster herds to find. The likes of Orcs or Harpies herds, whatever, to cater to all player levels.

Your story reminds me of when the ophidian invasion started. No warning from the devs (at least that I can recall). Just weird spawn showing up unexpectedly. I remember going to the bank in Serpent's Hold on Baja on a Friday evening, I think it was, and there was some weird ophidian spawn actually coming into the town by the bank and it was pretty clear it wasn't extra spawn left over from digging up a treasure chest. Still being fairly new to UO at the time, I paged because I thought something had gone haywire. Got a very, very strange reply from the GM's about how they didn't get involved in in-game events. Within another half hour or so, though, we found out there was definitely something different afoot! I loved that particular event.

bump!

I like this idea... randomly spawning monsters or groups of monsters.. with the chance of dropping a high end item.. high end item such as a doom rare (could even be cursed items), or level 7 map, some new fishing items (baits), special dyes, some of the Old Tok rares, or some of the new items that are being added to Shame.

And having the town crier point us in the direction would be a great idea.. but really anything out and about the lands to give people a reason to just get out and walk around and explore would be nice..

We run into ogres, and ettins, and harpies all the time.. but they arent worth the time to even stop and look at. Everyone usually just runs on by..

Randomizing spawn is a great idea all around.

I suggested something similar a while back, maybe a month ago. If you go through old town cryer article there are lots of examplea of this. They talk about some random cemetery suddenly spawning high end undead, or a longboat uprising in some random mountain pass somewhere, things like that. I think it a great idea.

I agree, just have them pop up randomly, not like paragons, or champs... totally random!

I think invasions are a great idea. I remember playing a text based mmorpg and the best times there was when high end critters attacked the towns. This would definitely add to the enjoyment of playing.

Though it was a prolonged invasion of dragons (ithink it was crimson dragons) that finally killed Great Lakes thriving west Britain bank bank sitting community. Perhaps a Luna invasion to bring them home again.
