A Veteran Returns

Well folks I haven't played UO since 2004 but I had a nostalgic conversation with a co-worker and decided to come back and see what has changed. I played from 1998-2004 inclusive but left for reasons I can't explain.

Main is a Tamer/Mage on Catskills
115 Animal Lore
106 Animal Taming
100 Veterinary
100 Eval Int
104 Magery
105 Medi
76 Spell Resist

After so long away I've lost all sense of direction where I was going with character progression not to mention directions to places in game. So much has changed and it's almost a little daunting. My 18X18 is gone, all my stabled animals are gone, and I remember having several million in cheques that are also gone. Other than having GM skills its like starting fresh. If anyone is on catskills and wouldn't mind helping an old vet get back into the swing of things please let me know.

It's good to be back.

Welcome back.

You can get plenty of template help here, your shard forum, and on the tamer and mage forums, I am certain.

Welcome back to UO. I may have some stuff on Catskills ill PM you in a few once i check what i got there (its not my main shard but i do have a character there). Anyway for the char u listed i would drop the magic resist and bring the rest of the skills to 120 (thats the template i use on my main on Atlantic).

If you need some gear to get you going again, I can cobble together a little something. If you need the location of land for an 18x18, I run across them occasionally. Get an idea what you need and let me know. Also, mention if you have, or are getting, the Stygian Abyss upgrade. Its really good. The other expansions aren't needed unless you really like to fish.

Welcome back !!

Check your bank boxes and characters' inventories for old items which can be considered rares, you might sell them for good gold to get a head start on new stuff.

The second move, I think, should be picking up Imbuing, you can read all about it either on Stratics or UOGuide and there is a Crafters' Forum on Stratics where you can have questions answered about its details.

What imbuing will do, is give you the ability to custom your armor and weapons according to your template and needs without having to seek, at least for now, expensive artifacts.

Basically, with imbuing you can progress with decent speed to be competitive up to a point.

You could also join a Guild active on your shard to assist you, you may want to check your shard's Forum here on Stratics about deciding what Guild might be more appealing to you.

If I were you, for the time being I would focus on PvM to first get a good stock of gold and new items and a good feel about the game before getting into PvP if you enjoy it, but if you join a Guild that might be different as PvPing with others comes easier.

By the way, tamers can now tame Greater Dragons which are a good pet to fight with. Not easy to tame though.

First off a thank you to everyone for offering to help I'm glad to see the community is still strong.

A little update, I was able to get a GM to restore my stable. I got my bonded Nightmare, WW, and two fire steeds back. Unfortunately none appear to be trained.

As for gear I have a spined leather mage armor set with some resist on it but not much else.

I have a large stockpile of reagents still but gold is an issue. When I left I had 20odd million in cheques but those have disappeared leading me to believe I may have been hacked at some point. I currently have about 40k across all my characters lol. On that note I went out to farm blood elementals for cash and got eaten alive several times and then lost all my loot getting to a healer as I don't know the dungeons anymore. Are blood eles still a good way to make cash? I also used to farm efreets for daemon bone but I assume that is fruitless now as the armor is probobly useless.

I tried to PM people but I don't have enough posts yet on this account. I lost my old stratics account years ago.

Edit: I will buy the SA expansion if I decide to keep playing I'm going to give it a few weeks to see how things go.

Thank you again everyone for the help.

Don't worry about it. I came back in about the same situation as you did. I had a house full of rares that I let decay, a lot of veteran rewards lost, and just a few million gold in the bank ( Ok, I had a leg up there, but you'll find gold fairly easy to come by). You have a big advantage in that you have a better build than I, IMHO, for farming gold to get started again. Apparently trained pets now can sell for large amounts, but given the work involved you might be better off saving to BUY one of those pets to enhance your ability to get gold.

Regardless since November of last year, I have enough gold to get anything I really need, and a Magincia house ( you missed out on that one unfortunately ). If you've never tried fishing, this may be your time to do it. The high seas expansion added loads of nautical themed content, and while it does have mixed reviews, a lot of the fishers are hooked on it ( no pun intended).

Try farming the troglodyte cave. You can pull money out of there pretty quickly, particularly with a bag of sending. I don't know about tamers, but a great place for my pure mage is the passage of tears spawn in the abyss. The gold is decent, and you get ingredients that can be sold, and quest items to turn in.

What was your old username here? Your account might be out there in limbo. Mine was when I came back. I just had to have the 2 merged together once I found my old one.

Hail Sosarian,

Welcome Home!

Catskills deserves their opportunity to embrace Thee and aid in Thy resettlement.

Should they fail in their obligations ... try Baja! Many will embrace Thee and aid in Thy resettlement. Have a Mage set Thee up with a couple Runebooks, Towns, Dungeons, etc., and download UO Cartography to aid thy land and sea travels.

Become not discouraged. Karma intends a place especially for Thee. Patiently seek it, and Thee shall be Rewarded!

Some time back there was this thread on Stratics about Stygian Abyss price reduced.

I think it is a good addition not only for the new dungeon but also for the imbuing skill which, especially to a new or returning player can come very handy to catch up faster less expensively as before.

With imbuing, at least as I see it, a new or returning player can train up the skill, gather the ingredients hunting the SA dungeon and make quite good and competitive armor and weaponry without having to try buying expensive artifacts or spend countless time trying to find them as drops.

Sure, artifacts are still nice to have and quite a boost but what I am trying to say is that imbuing can, with limits, at least allow to reach a very decent level of competition in a relatively fast time and at a cheaper cost than previously. Then one can keep on going improving one's own gear and weaponry over time adding powerfull artifacts.

That is why I think SA is a good expansion for a new or returning player to have.

Fish and Crabs/Lobsters needed for Fish Monger Quests sell easy and quite fast.

There is always someone needing 10 or 20 of some fish or crabs and lobs to fill up an order and not feeling to go fishing for them and so they end up buying them.
So, they are also a good way to make gold.

Another way is also selling Imbuing ingredients. Crystalline Blackrock, Seeds or Renewal and others as well sell quite well.

If you ask either on Catskills Forum or in General Chat, you may find someone offering you a vendor in Luna which will also help up making gold.

Thanks for all the info folks. I need to tame a few things from the samurai expan like a rune beetleand hopefully Hiryu once I get used to taming again without dying took me over an hour to tame one mare I consistantly screwed up lead taming and I cant seam to find where to make macros so it's clumsy at best lol. But after that I should be on track to rebuilding my gold stash and getting a new house.
