Hi guys, Im an old returning vet, i left at the start of AoS. poped back for a month during samurai empire. i have now returned and i have to say. im enjoying being back, 3 months now =D.

The reason for my post.

I have created a gm smith, working on and up to 120.

I have started to do Bods and collecting plenty. I also have a mining path set out for my self, so I can harvest all my own ore. but the problem has come, I want to open a shop. my own smithie. something i did long ago. back in 2000, it was a grate success then, everyone new what was GM and what wasnt. but now as I have found out its all Runic this and Imbued that, where does it leave the Humble Smith.

I've looked around and found, good smiths are hard to find. also a stocked smith in general is also hard to find. so im here with a few questions if I may ask for you help.

Are there few good smiths around because there not needed, or because its not very profitable?

Are the smiths I find empty because there always selling what they make, or purely down to there owners are slack?

Are there any items a market look for, Dragon bardings, or repair bods.
consumables, can a smith make things other professions need,
or items people want to have enhanced then imbued as per custom preference?

Any insider info I should acquire, suck as specific auction/auction sites, vendor registry site's or calculators for what nots.

I know there are things I can find on goggle, but something you can only find by asking.

maybe if this is useful, we may even help other returning players =D

Im in a similar boat. My server has very few operating smiths. I know there are plenty of greats around but they dont have vendors open with elite gear on them. Imbue really has shaken things up. I have one guy i can go to thats not in my guild for items. He shoots you a price then makes what you want. Its not cheap either. To get all of my characters set the way I want them, i could buy a castle 2 times over. So im going to start making my own items. I think thats what all of our smiths are doing. They seem to get the choice loots and enhance/imbue until they get exactly what they want, then put their smith up until the next expansion etc. Ill end up doing that myself the way things are looking. Ive considered just packing everything up and starting from scratch on a new server but I wont do that unless my guild folds up.

Several changes to the game have killed smithing like it was many years ago.
First of all: metal armour provides no bonus compared to leather. (Not counting volorite runicc rafted samurai plate .... Those could end up slighty better than leather, if you have enough luck on your crafting attemp. But valorite runics were heavily duped and getting one on your own work is hardly worth the efforts).
Than imbuing: You can so easily cutomize weapons and armours with imbuing that it is nearly impossible to compete with that system with pure (runic) crafting. But you can greatly reduce the imbuing costs, if you use low end runics to get the most expensive properties onto your items before you start imbuing.
But that doessnt mean, that smiths are useless in these days. You can earn good money by the bod system. Its the only know source for powder of fortification. You can use the lower runics for nice blanks for imbuing. Some of the ml recipes can produce nice items/items with unusual properties.

Smiths are probably the most profitable they have ever been if you pick up on whats needed atm.

My smith has made billions since SA came out compaired to before where i made a few 100 mill.

Heres how:

Fill iron and dull copper bods to get new bods to fill and keep all your POF bods [there worth 150k per pof so 10 is easy 1.5million]., rince and repeat with the ones you get back and hold onto the ones for val verite hammers.

Val and verite hammers still sell for 8-15million.

Fill and turn in single bods that give dull or shadow hammers and use the hammers to make the most wanted wepons [currently there double axes and throwing wepons] with iron ingots to get elemental wepons with no usless mods, they sell easy for 1million to 5 million.

Fill and hand in bods [single and large] for bronze hammers, use them with dull copper ingots and make knights war cleaver while holding a +30 hammer and then unravel them so you get ~30 Relic frags which sell for ~30k per [ thats another 1million per bronze hammer].

Also your constantly collecting new bods everytime you fill one and hand it in you get a new one [the old system of waiting 6 hours has changed, when you hand one in you can get another straight away], so you can fill 100 and hand them in 1 at a time and atfter you hand one in colect a new one then hand another in collect a new one and so on.

Hope that helps and sheds some light.

If you come to Atlantic there are 3 of us that are close when it comes to bod swapping and buying, Orion, Jester, Marks bod shop, your welcome to join our little bod comunity.

Nice i was not aware the change in handing one in and getting another right away.. Also way back when, i was told never get one at 6 hours but wait for a full 24 for a chance at a better one. I feel like a dope.. thanks again man

If you should ever run low on junk-smithing bods, you could train up/buy 0.1 blacksmithy on your other chars. (Most templates survive a loss of 0.1 skillpoints.) That is enough to get an iron bod every hour with them. (Bod timer changes with skill height. 1 hour is the lowest. With 5-7 characters and one of them beeing your smith you could get 4-6 junk bods every hour.)

That's why looking through the FAQs on just about every skill is worth your while, when you return from a prolonged absence. The change to BODs to where you could "cycle" them for new ones, was instituted almost six years ago, and that's long ago that many casual smiths may have forgotten (or never knew) they functioned differently (and therefore forget to tell someone returning from a departure prior to AoS about such things, or assume they know).

I did my best back in 2008 to try to drag the FAQs kicking and screaming up to at least SE/ML data. Some of the old FAQs, before the Forum crash, hadn't been updated since LBR, at best (some had references to Third Dawn stuff being exclusive that LBR had opened up to the 2D/classic client). Most had been relatively untouched after AoS, except for replies adding SE and ML items to FAQs whose original posters were no longer around to make edits.

Also another thing i forgot is that th old system of a certain bod giving a certain reward has changed so you can now get, say, a val hammer from a bod that would of before given a verite or a +60.

I think there is a few threads here somewhere that people have posted what reward they got from what bods so you can get an idea of what you might get from a bod with the new system.

Good ideas Thunderz,

but you still need to get all the perfect emeralds for the knights war cleavers.
If I start up my old miner, how many gems can I expect per time?

I wouldnt really know as i dont mine anymore, i find i can make more gold hunting for say 1 hour, than i would make in the equivilant of the time spent mining so i buy my gems in bulk and get them for about 5k per.

I did do about 20 minutes of mining the other day trying to get a shadow elle to train my dread on and in those 20 minutes i got 8 gems 40 val ingots 60 verite and loads of the others so it might still be productive to mine but thats not really enough time mining to really get a good figure from.

Hey Spitfire

It's RE :) I'm in a similar boat to you bud, except I have only recently getting into crafting to support my chars, it wasn't something I ever touched on when I use to play years ago.

I thought I was set once I hit gm smith and 120 imbuing, but then you need so many different ingredients, and now I am learning if you wan't the best suit...you need to maybe even look at woodland armour which requires carpentry >.< Enhancing, imbuing, the different properties of materials it's a lot to take in for me despite the good info on here.

I have come this far though so I think I'm going to stick with it. Hit me up on icq man and we can start experimenting and seeing if we can get suits built up for our warriors, if we can we could then think about selling custom suits if it's feasible.

Just hit a snag. I have my mining moved to my tamer now. I understand that shadow iron elementals are immune to most pet damage. Is this across the board or is there a specific pet that can kill them. I normally use a bane dragon but have a GD also. Please advise.. thanks

I believe it's across the board.

I do know, though, that you can use provocation to get wild creatures to damage them - not sure if provoing them onto a pet would do the same.

Its not only the shadow ore ele .... the valorite one should be immune to pet damage, too.
I wouldnt go out mining without a fire beetle. As a tamer adding a boura for taking the hits might work. (The have hte highes hit points among the 2-follower-slot-pets.) Thought the best way to go after those ore elementals would be using an (earth) ele slayer bow with mage weapon.

Yeah i got to rethink things as i plan to hit shadow very hard. May try and change to a warrior template but this is starting to suck

You dont need to hunt ore elementals when you only want to do some mining. If your only for the ore boost from the gargoyle pickaxes you could mine in guard zone and call the guards onto the elementals. Cove works great for that. (Usually there are so many escort-npcs around that they call the guards for you before you realise, an ellie has popped. It was very usefull when blackrock elementals were spawning when mining some time ago.) But imho it would be a waste of ore. The ores from the eles boost you ratio for coloured ore by a good number.

For less loss of Elementals' ore, if you're going to be mining in a Trammel ruleset, go with Umbra. You have a mountain face along part of the north side, and the edge of the "moat" ring can be mined all the way around the city, both inside and out. As there are no places where you are more than 4 steps from the guard zone in town, and the NPCs are clustered more towards the center, you have plenty of room to fight the elementals you can kill, and are easily able to move far enough to yell for the guards without dying, for those that you can't.
