A Question About Plants...

Anyone have a good resource/guide for growing plants and proper care. Something a little more in-depth than the one on Stratics? I'm trying to find out if there's a vacation mode for them and other hints on cross-pollination. Thanks.

this is a good sight i think the only way to do a vacation mode is to put them in a locked down box in your home i have heard bank box works to but not sure i have plants in my house that are over a year old with seeds still on them in excellent condition

If you don't want to take care of vibrant plants for a while, put them in a character's backpack and don't log in that character until you're ready to care for the plants again. Or put them in a secure container indefinitely. (I believe they will still go through growth cycles if the container is merely "locked." It must be secured to put the plants in statis.)

sorry about that i forgot about the lock down and locked down and secure features but yes locked down and secure is the correct setting and they will go thou one more growth cycle so if they are sick and will die the next growth cycle then they will be dead the next day but if they are vibrant and you give them the proper treatment they will be vibrant the next server up and will; need not be tended until you take them out of the secure container just remember to water if they need it when you take them out

If you are on Pacific I can give you some of the seeds that give resources.

I would also suggest making a couple of "bottomless" pitchers of water. It makes tending your garden much easier.

Tina is correct. To put a plant in stasis you need to place the plant in a container that is "locked down and secure". Locked down plants, even within a container will continue to do growth checks, and require care, this is true of plants in your backpack.

I used to have a little book I copied and gave to new gardeners. I had it all memorized, but it has been so long since I did serious UO gardening, I'd have to guess.

One thing I do remember in terms of tips for making your gardening life easier when you have a real life to attend to:

Place a container in easy reach of your plants containing half filled kegs of each potion type you need for care: Greater Heal, Greater Cure, Greater Strength, Greater Poison, as well as water pitchers. When you are ready to tend, simply place all the kegs in your pack with just 1 bottle, and you can dispense directly from the keg without the fuss of bottles of potions. I use half filled kegs because of the weight (my gardener was also an alchemist so I just filled the kegs to half again when necessary). I placed my plants in rows, stacked 3 high using small tables, with plenty of room between the rows. This let me keep track of a large number of plants in a small area, and check them without overlooking any tiers (if I got interrupted, I would lock down a keg next to the stack I was working on, so I could quickly return).

Place a water trough in easy reach of all of your growing stations, that way you can fill your pitcher from any location while tending your plants, without having to move.

Start your plants in batches in tiers ALL AT THE SAME TIME. You can then care for tiers and not have to worry about them following different growth cycles. That will allow you to tend them at the same time of day and keep them vibrant. The better you tend your plants, the fewer potions you use in their care, and the cheaper it is for you.

If you are planning to get serious about generations and cross pollination, I would suggest you start with seeds collected from boglings, as you will know they are first generation, and work your way through generations following the cross pollination tables on Tower of Roses. I stored my generation parents in chests (first, second, third, fourth and higher) in chests with colored backpacks inside, so I always had a particular type of a certain generation to cross whenever I wanted it.

You might notice that there tend to be more mutant plants in the resource plant bearing varieties for sale on your shard...that is probably because people grow those more in mass quantity, and it is easy to just keep crossing the highest generations, and thus more chance of producing a mutant.

To add to Skylark's post, you no longer need to carry empty bottles to use the keg. Just put the keg in your pack and it will draw a bottles worth from the keg (kinda like opening the tap and pouring just the right amount on your plant). I would also make life easier buy creating some "bottomless" pitchers of water. It's really easy to do, and has been an added "bonus feature" to the game since the game started.

Locked down plants, even within a container will continue to do growth checks...
This is incorrect. Plants do not grow in locked down containers. Whenever I am finished with a batch of plants but am not yet ready to remove the seeds and replant I lock down the backpack they are in and leave them until I'm ready to start the next batch. I currently have 147 plants in locked down, not secure, backpacks in my house, and not one has gotten a growth check since I put them there several weeks ago.

Plants will continue to get growth checks in the following situations:

Locked down out in the open, such as on a table or the floor of your house

In your bankbox

In your backpack

On a packy (The only practical packy is a beetle since loaded packies cannot be stabled and will not log out [auto stable] with you.)

Plants will not get growth checks in either locked down or secure containers.

This is an old site that doesn't appear to have been updated in several years, but it does still have a lot of information about gardening and plant crossings that is still valid.

To the OP, if you have MS Excel, I can put a copy of the spreadsheet I made up for my own use when I was crossing plants somewhere you can download, if you like. It has one sheet with a table to show what color parents will produce what color child, a text-style "calculator" that will tell you which type child plant will come from any two parent plants, a list I used to keep track of which crossings I had done, and a chart I used to mark my progress as I was working toward getting one of each type in every color.
