I am a US player, playing on this shard since its inception many, many years ago. I took a hiatus for about 3 years and am just back recently.
I have played with a nasty ping - usually 170+. Yet, for all the years I played UO I functioned just fine with it and I was once one of the top 5 wealthiest players on this shard. I hunted PvM most of the time, top end monsters, farmed their rare goods and made tons of gold. I even jumped in to PvP a little for a few years - not very well for the ping I had - but I had FUN.
Working with 170+ ping... 1/2 that time in the 200's, I see a ton of exageration here and if you need 30-70 ping to play this game and enjoy it, oh well, thats on you. I've had great times with people here on this shard - great times with this game and still do.
Hearing that a 200 ping results in 5 minute log ins and messages, and hearing that the game is unplayable is utter nonsense, that is pure experience speaking from my own play. While its not what you are used to - seriously stop crying and play the game for the reasons for playing the game.
I will say, it is truly sad the route that those in charge at UO took to the level of secrecy that they have deployed in moving the server. I PING AT 23 here in Nevada for Oceania right now. Rest assured the server is in California... because I ping 93 on Atlantic.
As a business manager myself, the deception deployed and no answers to good honest customers is a complete insult to customers and is a horrible business practice. If I ran a company like that, my customers would close my doors with their disdain.
Look at Cal's words quite closely... "Exploring options, waiting to give u concrete answer". What that really means is, "Yes, we moved the server for business reasons and never intended to return it, period. We didn't really know that moving it, with our plan of not having many issues, was going to be a total screw fest for our Aust. customer base.
The only fact is... they arent going to return the server anytime soon until they are absolutely sure that a US based server will not work.
The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Either tell these folks that their server is coming back or you are trying to figure out how to make it work and screwed up. Easy as that.
ASKING PAYING CUSTOMERS TO CONTINUE PAYING FOR A SERVICE THAT IS BROKEN WITH NO ANSWER IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND IS BAD BUSINESS. I mean seriously?
Is it impossible to take 5 minutes a day to address a "still paying" customer base in the hundreds so hard to do? Daily updates maybe???
I'm disappointed - period.
