A Few Myth about Town Loyalty

M

Guest
I have spent quite some time doing town loyalty and got 5 banners now. However, I am still not sure about quite a few things and maybe someone can advise:
1) Raiders: they seem to spawn every a couple of days at popular play time (evening or weekend) but there seem to be no fixed spawn time. Also, does arresting them and hand them to the Captain give more credit than killing them?
2) Protestors: in terms of amount of credit, does it make a difference to give them gold or food? They take 1000gp or 25 fish steak, or 8 cook chicken, etc. If the amount of credit is the same, obviously fish steak is a better way to go.
3) Spawn of Protestors and Rioters: Do protestors turn into rioters after a certain period of time? After a town has been cleared of protesters and rioters, the new spawn seems to be exclusively protestors.

I *think* it works like this but I'm not 100% sure:

1) Exactly same points as arresting rioters. It has been suggested before that EMs set the spawn for raiders.
2) It doesn't make any difference as long as they stop protesting at the end.
3) There is a fixed amount of protestors and rioters in each town (2 rioters in each town is reported before), when you arrest a rioter or help a protestor, an ordinary townfolk (blue NPCs) turns into either of them. They stop rioting and protesting after a certain period.

1) Yes arresting raiders give More loyalty then Killing them. When you arrest them you get loyalty and when you take them to the captain you gain Loyalty again. When you kill them you only get loyalty when they die.

2) If you give the Max what they want (1000 gold,25 fish.....) and they turned normal they all give the same loyalty.

3) No, there always 3 rioters at a town. As soon you arrest them a new one will appear. Certain towns have rioters spawn them outside the main town.

-Moonglow have them South of the town, use the south teleporter to check that area, also the lyceum have them.
-Jhelom have them also on one of the islands, again use teleporters to go to them.
-Britain can have them also across the SW bridge . Check around the castle. Both West and East Britain have them
-Vesper can have them over the N bridge at the bank, Then go to the east of the bridge. There is another part of the town, keep going east to a open area.
Over the West bridge from the bank you can find them too.
-Trinsic is very big they can be anywhere. Some of them hide on top or between the outside walls. Also on top of buildings.
-Minoc can have them south of the bank between the tents too.
-The Skara ones are all inside the main island (Most easy town to do)
-Yew is huge but there is a spot S of the prison on the other side of the water where they can spawn. you have to go all the way around to get to them.
-New Magincia is like Skara , they all on the Island. Most likely between the stalls.

I hope this helps but imporant is, there are always 3 rioters in a town. As soon you arrest one the next one will appear. :)
If you don't find one they always in one of the remote places.

There is no difference...however...
To make sure they stop protesting I give them food (I use all types) till they return a stack and then finish them off with gold which they usually take under 40 gold after feeding them.
At first I just gave food...but when I left the screen and came back they were still protestors...thats when I started to add the gold at the end and it solved my problem.

Here is the order from Most loyalty to least.

Arresting Raiders->Killing Raiders->Arresting Rioters->Giving gold/food to Protestors->Removing fires and garbage.

But its best to remove the fires and garbage too when arresting rioters. A single fire might be less then the other things but you gain on fires and garbage for each little bit you remove.

I've found that the protestors always seem to spawn in the same locations in each city, so I mark runes for those spots. Also, protestors seem to always eventually turn into rioters. I give any protestors I find very small amounts of gold (e.g., 2 gold pieces) and then just check on them after each round of arresting rioters. Once in a great while, the protestors will turn blue for a few moments, but they soon become disgrunted again, going straight to the rioting stage.

I have also found them in the northern and southern mage shops. I'm beginning to wonder if the entire island is a hot zone.

As per UO Guide:

Angry Rioters worth: 100x
Helping Angry Protesters worth: 25x
Picking up garbage putting out fires worth: 2x
where x = gain

  • arrest 4 Angry Rioters or help 16 Angry Protestors for Commended,
  • arrest 20 Angry Rioters or help 80 Angry Protestors for Respected,
  • arrest 100 Angry Rioters or help 400 Angry Protestors for Adored and
  • arrest 500 Angry Rioters or help 2000 Angry Protestors for Venerated.
I counted Rioters on two characters and got the same for both (note did it over 2 days so a little decay may of happened) So arrest 5, then 15, then 75/80 to get to adored.
After the first character I didn't bother with helping any Angry protestors, and totally gave away putting out fires and picking up garbage. The cost/effort in donating gold, food etc isn't worth it and putting out the fires is even less worth the time and effort and stops you getting clicking injuries and suffering the mind numbing boredom. In the time it takes to do the protestors, fires and garbage it is much quicker to just arrest, hand in, and rinse repeat. The smaller the town the quicker it is.

Do we have to be venerated to get the banner? If not, and choose the banner at adored, what's the advantage of continuing to venerated?

Perhaps a statement on the Social Revolution?

It's more valuable to incarcerate the disgruntled and oppressed, than it is to help them? Give money to the masses to calm them, only to see them get angry once again and demand more?

Do not need to be Venerated to get a banner. Adored is enough. But in the future we might need to be Venerated for future rewards. :)

Yeah. I popped over to uoguide right after I posted this question and read the small print. I'm going to pick up my banner tonight. I've heard that most folks are doing banners from where they first started their journey in Britannia. For me, it was Moonglow, spending day after day in that tailor shop, working my fingers to the bone trying to earn enough gold to buy reagents so I could get started on my lifetime goal of being a scribe/mage. My first home was a teeny tiny one bedroom shake on the tip of the Island of Moonglow. So I'll proudly display the Moonglow banner at my home.

Yes am not sure if there is any point to being Venerated. I went there on my main character, but the next two I took to adored just to get the banner and is no way I am moving them further on as it was just too tedious the first time and I have better things to do. Now the problem is how long do you have to continually maintain this? The character I have at Venerated I have to log in each day and do a few otherwise it drops to adored pretty quick. If the only reason to be at either adored or venerated is to get the banner then I wish they would just say so. Doing the other two adored ones to remain there is also becoming a pain.

Please no comment on 'loyalty' in to get the rewards yadda yadda and how loyal are you yadda yadda, this is a computer game and I am not 'loyal' to pixels.. it is a GAME and is supposed to be fun, not tedious.

Some information on this would be nice, as basically I do not want to be maintaining something that has no more promise of something further.

I'm rather disappointed in the City Guards and the Guard Captain. They do nothing to stop the rioters and raiders.

I was in Trinsic yesterday, putting out fires and arresting a rioter with the City Guard walking calmly through the flames. just ignoring everything going on around him. The Guard Captain hands out ropes to arrest the rioters, and doesn't even bother moving from her spot to help, expecting others to do all the work, and then immediately releases the rioters. I arrested Otis the Fighter, handed him over the the Captain, ran back out for more and sure enough, there was Otis once again!

Wouldn't it be a lot more immerse-ive if the City Guards and Captain actively participated in the event?

I see Protesters/Rioters How many points for the much tougher Raiders, arrest vs kill? and speaking of that... Here's the problem I'm having.
As long as I can remember, UO was pretty much all about the KILL. In PVP/factions, that's of very high interest. All the dungeons, KILL and Loot. Even the active virtues are split 70% KILL. I think that's why so many think it's just plain Lame, we're KILLERS, Trained Killers at that, and you want us to hand people a fish???
Let's bring on them Dancin' :mylittlepony:ponies!

OH, and shouldn't Helping them protesters/cities gain Compassion?

I can see it now - the new PVP / Factions expansion. Instead of killing the Reds, you have to arrest them and take them to the local Sheriff!

Ok, now I'm really confused. A month ago I stopped arresting rioters, etc. when I got to Adored. A week later I was Respected and quit in disgust. Now that we are getting banners, I decided to get to Adored again. My town is Vesper. I checked my "Loyalty" rating before I started, and I was Respected. After a couple of hours and turning in around 25 angry rioters, I checked my loyalty and it says I'm DISTRUSTED! Every fire I put out, every trash pile I picked up, every rioter I turned in told me that the town appreciated what I had done. So how do you go from Respected to DISTRUSTED when you are doing what you are supposed to do?

You only loose Loyalty if you been arresting and putting fires in other towns then Vesper too.
Also if you kill or arrest raiders in other towns you loose loyalty.
Only do all the town loyalty in one town and keep your hands of other towns. (With same character)

I should mention...The Raiders that attacked Thursday could not be arrested and did not give town loyalty. You also could not leech life from them. In addition to this, the town was full of angry protesters and angry rioters. I must have counted at least 20 in Brit alone. I don't know if this was intentional but it was a bit strange.

I think this was intentional since you don't want to decrease your loyalty towards other towns while participating the event in Britain.

Not realy but i recommend the bigger towns like Yew,Vesper,Britain and Trinsic to do them with someone who can cast a gate. Mark a rune near the Captain of the guards to gate the rioters too. New Magincia, Skara Brae ,Jhelom , Minoc and Moonglow can be easier done with just walking around.

For a bunch of us older vets, we're choosing the towns in which we started our lives in Britannia. Seems appropriate. Other people are doing all the towns, one with each character.

Please, do tell how to get a banner in 3-4 hours. I've been dragging angry protestors in Trinsic to the Captain, killing raiders and putting out fires until I'm bored to tears. I am way past 3-4 hours of this "fun" activity and am still only Respected. Any tips to speed this process up would be appreciated.

You have just summed up about every system/event in UO.

Bods, Heartwood quests, Town Invasion, Community Collections, Virtues etc.

All are mind numbing grinds of the exact same tasks until you want to poke your eye out. Thank goodness Diablo III ships on May 15th. I can't want for some new content.

And the Devs wonder why this game is dying..

Try to add FUN and take out the WORK. I already have a job.

I do not agree 100% with this.

The sparkle holloween quests were fun. I like town invasions (for the most part) but I think they need ot be waves of troops. I also liked the bane ophid fights in the desert where we could advance the spawn to the base camps...you could show progress and it was action oriented....not mouse click oriented (mouse click oriented :) grinding loyalties is even less fun than playing minefield)

I once wrote up a plan for invasion which would start off with scout troops landing at various places a bit away from towns with scout troops. Also "spies" involved in intel gathering (blue NPCs that would turn red if they were moused over - perhaps with a chance of detecting spy activity upped with forensic eval). If the scout troops were resoundedly defeated, a new locations would be scouted, If not, vanguards troops would land. If a beachhead were able to be landed, then an invasion would occur. Invasion would have not only ground troops, but ships moving into shore to drop troops off.

Troops were mixed fighters, casters, healers, etc, along with creatures (dragonsl, GDs, etc). Sea battles involved trying to stop ships from landing...if ship reaches coast, additional spawn. Champs spawn level bosses who could summon support troops to defend him as well (kinda like barracoon spawns help). The fight would progress towards a city, which would then be invaded if not held back.

This may have required some GM/EM/Dev involvement in order to trigger certain events, or perhaps a EM/GM roleplaying the leader calling certain shots.

But it would have been a more involved, action oriented scenario rather than a grind. You could even play it up over a week, starting with the spies/scouts etc...leading up to an invasion on the weekend to maximize people ability to participate. (turn in intel to town guard captain...who, if enough intel is gathered, could discern the time and general location of the invasion.

Would need more work to flesh out....but I think it would be a lot more fun than grinding loyalties the way we are now.

Nice summary, Lord Drago.

Remember way back when each NPC spouted off random quests to find a magical item to the east, or whatever? That was an incomplete system and didn't really work because you could never find the item the NPC was looking for, but that sort of reminds me of the Radiant Quest system in Skyrim. The random quests in Skyrim allow you to build loyalty in a city, to to build up your reputation in each city in Skyrim, buy a house and eventually become a Thane of each city. You also get other perks from your reputation - such as the guards looking the other way for minor offenses. Perks from loyalty like reduced prices at NPC's, or the ability to buy special items from the NPC's, would be nice.

I think a system like this to do random quests for the citizens and nobles of each city to build loyalty would be better than the repetitiveness of this current loyalty event. I really don't see the point of the current loyalty system.

I finally got all my banners about a week ago and figure I should come back and share some new experiences:
1) The rioters/protestors always spawn at the fixed locations. Make runes to those locations and recall around will help a lot.
2) Normally, the rioters spawn instantly once an arrest occurs, but sometimes there is a bit delay. That means you may not find a rioter for a while. Make runes to both tram and fel.
3) large cities like trinsic and yew take a lot of time to gain loyalty. No way they can be done in 3-4 hours.
4) for fun, put out fire and pick up trash; for effecient eye candy (banner) grabbing, forget them.
5) cooked fish steak does work as well as and much cheaper than gold to feed the protesters.
