40%+ loss rate on crab traps?...

And that's just trying to get them to get to 2 lobsters/crabs in a single trap. I can't imagine how any of them get to 5 aside from sheer dumb luck.

Seems like the loss rate on the traps is too high.

I can handle the "junk" lobster and crabs, not sure on the pure loss rate of the traps themselves though.

Quite frustrating.

I haven't noticed a loss rate that high.

I use a UOA macro of: Use trap/target relative/forward one/forward one
Then I use it to place traps until my pack's empty (usually between 40 and 80), then back up and pick them all up with forward one/forward one then doubleclick (no need to move the mouse).
Doing that leaves them in the water way over 2 minutes (assuming a crab/lobster every minute), and the loss rate is (I guess) about 20% tops.
Most of the traps I pull up seem to have multiples in, too (although with the excessive flood of messages, it can be hard to tell).

The only reason to leave traps in for over 2 min is if you are trying for the "special" ones I have done many tests and if you are going for named ones the best thing is to pull after 1 min and before 2

I just tracked the use of 50 traps waiting until they had 2 in a trap before I pulled them. Of that I pulled up 29 traps and lost 21. I tracked the numbers via hotbars, and will continue such tests.

Also I've noticed that the timeframe for getting anything is not exactly the 1 minute per "check" unless there are "nothing happens" checks as well, some fill reasonably fast, some take up to 5 minutes to get the first hit.

Fishing is 100.0 right now (as I have yet to get a scroll) which may be a part of it as well.

From my passive observations and the information we've been given, I think that there are 1 minute "ticks".
For every full minute the trap is in the water there's a chance for a +1 to the crab/lobster count in the trap (and a chance for no +1), and the possibility the trap will be lost.
So, waiting for two **bob**s might be taking you through enough ticks to explain your loss rate. I don't know for sure, though :(

If I had the patience to do all of the data gathering, Pinco's UI in the Enhanced Client shows how many are in a trap at a given time (as "Full 1", Full 2", etc) as well as gives the time from the last time the trap triggered (timer starts after the first catch). I've seen that timer between the first and second go well into the 3 - 5 minute range before anything happened.

So the info gathering ability is there... Hotbar slots for empty (base number to use) and full (successes), number in each trap (to set the success rate at X catches per trap), and the time between triggers.

Just have to devote some time to data gathering I guess.

When I was hard core crabbing I was losing like 10-20%. I never left them in past 1 or 2 "bobs."

at 1 min you either catch a crab,or dont

at 2 min you catch a crab, dont catch one,or lose the trap even if it has a crab/lobster in it

at each bob it increases your chance to get a named fish or special fish

at 1 min you never lose a trap

at 2 min and each min after you have about a 20% chance (roughly) to lose traps

so at 5 min you have 20% chance to lose the trap 4 different times

i did some tests and posted the results a while back in the fishing forum

Trap loss and catching ordinary crabs and lobsters has been a problem since forever - problem is nobody listens to what players would like done about it.
