[Fishing] 30 Minutes of my life into crabbing...

I wanted to test how much time consuming was crabbing on average for me.

Spent 30 minutes of my life non-stop crabbing with zero breaks.

Results after all this time spent were :

- 52 Crabs
- 49 Lobsters

- 4 king crabs
- 2 Snow Crabs
- 5 Dungeness Crabs
- 9 Apple Crabs
- 3 Rock Crabs
- 9 Blue Crabs

- 8 Spiney Lobsters
- 5 Crusty Lobsters
- 2 Hummer Lobsters
- 8 Rock Lobsters
- 5 Fred Lobsters
- 5 Shovel-Nose Lobsters

No wonder how one may feel from wasting 2 or 3 times 20 of these just to get a damn book or a pole or some baits one will hardly ever use....

And, on top of it, crabs and lobs are counted as half they should (1 point instead of 2) !!!

I mean, to gather 60 crabs or lobsters (3 lines of 20 each) to fill some order it will take me at the very least around 1.5 or 2 hours.

That's 2 hours work spent crabbing non-stop folks !!!!!!

And of top of it I lost 27 traps which sunk (gold loss).

To get what ? A damn useless book or a pole ?

And then people complains that fishing powerscrolls cost too much ?

Not for those who actually fish their catches manually, using their time and not scripting..........

How many traps are you putting out at once?

I drop usually 48 traps at a time and yes, although it is slow, i usually get better results than that.

Ironically, I just got a 115 scroll with a 10 Lobster on it...

Freind and i drop 150 traps same time..
Just put them on the deck...hit slow forward...then last object hotkey and place in water.

Once at the end of placing them , head back wait 3 minutes and start to pick up..
I make sure that im also maxed for weight in back pack so that all the traps drop on the deck, makes looting them easyer.

But takes about 30 min to do 300 total..

Another option is to place a smaller number of traps, then start fishing for fish.

Typically, I can place 8-20 traps (depending on whether I'm fishing from my ship for deep water fish, or the Emporium docks for shallow fish), make 15-18 casts, then go back and pick up all my surviving traps. Most places will let you get 30 or so casts before running dry on fish, and traps seem to be on a a separate "fished out" count that I rarely encounter.

When the fish stop biting at one end of my string of traps, I place the traps in the opposite direction and fish at the other end. by the time it runs out, the original spot has refilled.

If I had it my way....

Option 1. I would like to see crabbing and lobstering disappear from quests completely.

Option 2. Make crabbing and lobstering an individual quest you could pick up from a "Crustacean Monger" to get baits strickly for some of the rare crabs and lobsters out there.

Option 3. Once you hit 106 skill (105 would be even better) and start getting quest orders for dungeon fish, they should drop the crab and lobster orders completely from your quest orders. Leave crabbing and lobstering for the under 105/106 skilled. Seeing that you don't get much from turning in crabs/lobs anyhow.

Either of those three options would certainly make me a MUCH HAPPIER fish quester. rolleyes:

In order to try contain my losses of traps, I deploy about 30 of them because more I realized I have a hard time being quick to pull them up fast enough when they *bob*.

It would be interesting, to make a comparison, if you could run a session of 30 minutes using your technique and tell us how many totals would you gather with your way.

Please keep also track of how many traps you loose so we can make a comparison of that also.

Your method brings in 300 total versus my 170 roughly. About twice as much in the same time.

That sounds good though, how many traps you loose to sinking ?

When you say put them on the deck does it mean that you deploy them on the ship's deck rather than in the water ?

Do you deploy them on 2 lines (right and left from where you are standing in the middle) or on 1 line only ?

The lost is about 50 out of 300, still not to bad a lost i think...

I put the 2 stacks of 150 on the deck , then dbl click them to place in the water..i use last object hot key to grab a new one and place in the water going forward slowly..

Yes i do one side and freind the other..picking them up isent to bad, since im not to bad at multy tasking, fast fingers for stop and go..

I find no mater how long you leave them in your going to have same lost almost as doing 20, since wen it starts to "BOB" it will disapear most times...50/50 i think about....

Thats a guesstamit...

But true crabbing just sucks royaly for what rewards you get...i be happy to get a white net as a reward also from turn ins...or a bucket of fish deco item..

Devs realy need to ask players what they like and go from there, since there brains at time seem stuck in reverse or neutral..

Adding more sea life would have been nice, insted of the seaserp all the time...but there is still alot or room in High Seas expansion to keep UO going for a few more years if they plan it rite...

Hold it.

You get about twice the crabs/lobs that I do in the same time (30 minutes) but yours is a 2 people work !! I missed that.....

Therefore, you are basically getting my same catches in the same time frame if you divide them for the 2 people......

It seems so far there is not a better technique to catch a higher number of crabs/lobs in the same time frame (30 mins).......

I HATE CRABBING!

That said I think you did pretty good for only 1/2 hour Trapping.

9 Blue crabs ?....I can't find them anywhere, and I just keep getting orders for them over and over. I'm down by 35 right now. I got bunches of others saved up but can't catch a Blue.

I usably put out about 50 traps at a time, and pick them up after the first wave of bobs goes by. I hate to lose traps....lol

Wish I could trade some other kinds of bait for Blue crab bait.

Just wanted you to know I feel your pain.

I currently have 124 blue, but they're on Siege :d

I'm not scientific and hate analysing my game play, so I just do my own thing and not worry about how efficient it is, but if it's any use here's what I usually do:
1. I have a uoa macro which lays out 12 pots round the prow of my rowboat when it's facing East.
2. I have 24 traps in my pack
3. I have a pack horse beside me.
4. I lay out the first 12 pots. I collect them in as soon as they bob, picking up all 12.
5. I deploy the 2nd 12 traps
6. I empty the first set and put the catch in the packie - by the time I've done that the pots are bobbing and I pick them up.
Except for the first deploy I have no 'waiting time', I lose no pots (they're darn expensive on Siege) but I also don't have to hurry anything.
Just a nice, steady rythm, deploy empty, pick up, deploy, empty.

Yes theres 2 of us doing it...
Only one of us does the turn ins since theres realy no sense in 2 doing it..
Were good freinds from wen UO started so theres no greed involved whats so ever.

Each at 110 fishing and have a few spares for freinds or to sell to buy more traps..

Plus fishing is a sort of relaxing thing to do in UO at times..its so mind numbing , its relaxing in a way..haha..

I understand, I am just trying to compare methods and find out what is the most efficient method for catching crabs and lobsters in a given time.

Since your method brings in 300 crabs/lobsters in 30 minutes but involves the time of 2 players I need to consider the number of catches per player in that time frame (30 minutes) at 150 each.

Since I am at roughly 170 we are about there, neither method is really much better. though it seems you are losing overall less traps than me.

Still trying to find how to maximize crabs and lobsters catches in a given time frame....

Anyone else has some better method ?

Something like catching 500 crabs and lobsters in 30 minutes ?

i use a similar method. slow forward and dropping about 100 traps, turning around, waiting a good 2-3 minutes and picking them all back up.

yes, some of them drop, but you don't want to pick them up on the first *bob* because that is always just a regular crab/lobster. i let them sit in the water to catch multiple crabs/lobsters.

once you pass a certain skill level, you only receive dungeon fish orders. so crabs/lobsters eventually become obsolete. my advice to all fishers would be to sell your crab/lobster and fish on a luna vendor, buy a 110 fishing scroll, and don't bother with these orders.

Para 1: Sorry, not true - or I'd never fill any orders because I always pick up on first bob.

Para 2: Small query - if all fishers followed that advice, where would the 110 fishing scrolls come from for them to buy?

i definitely find that leaving them in water longer results in a maximum yield compared to the first *bob*. maybe they don't only yield normal crab/lobsters on the first *bob* as that would be extremely difficult to fill orders, but i would never recommend pulling them up quickly.

i spent about 4 hours turning in non stop orders and got 3 110s, so they are definitely out there and easily obtained. people complain so much about crabbing, so to those who are having issues with collecting, sell what you have because i find that the fish/crabs/lobsters are in high demand. it's not something that i should share, as competition hurts my profits, but on a fishing forum, i say sell fish now, buy scrolls later. i find each day the value of fish and crustaceans decrease as do the value of the powerscrolls, so i sell my catches now and buy them off all the people who are turning in the quests.
