I'm a guy that's played UO for a long time. My oldest current account is sitting at 82 months. Played longer than that through different accounts and taking time off from the game when it became too much to bear etc. Anyway, I reactivated my account last night because I heard that my house was about to fall and I didn't want to lose the fel keep I've had for the past few years. So I log in and much to my surprise the house is still decaying. I page a GM and they tell me "Oh don't worry. Go read our website." But that's all the info they gave me. Now I'm not one of these people who turn their accounts off and on to abuse the system or anything like that. I just needed a break from the game for rl stuff.

So I figured that it couldn't be that big of a deal. If it were at least the GM would say something like , "Hey your house is going to fall even though we already received your money. Maybe you should give it to someone else instead of letting it rot." Lo and behold I log in this afternoon and I cannot get into my keep. It has another person's name on the house sign and all the years I put into this game accumulating items which I thought had monetary and/or sentimental value are gone for good.

No I am not whining. No you cannot have my "stuffs". Call me stupid if you wish, as I should've transferred the house last night when I had the chance. But hey, hindsight is 20/20. In closing, I would just like to say be careful just because ea has your money doesn't mean they will do their part. Flame me if you like. Not like you will hurt my feelings.

To be quite honest - you are blaming ea/mythic for something that is totally your own fault. Sour grapes. Give it two weeks to get over the pain of losing stuff.

Unlike you I have been fortunate with my "on & offs". I dread the day I count on the system to work and it fails. I have thought of that day and I know I wont quit because of it.

GL in your endeavors, tough break.

Once your house condemns, even re-activating the account won't save it. It falls after 92 days (or 95 can't remember), but if you re-activate after 90 days it won't be saved.

That said, I have had this happen in the past and I've paged GM's repeatedly until they finally helped me. I simply said "I don't care what the details are, I was told if I re-activate my account my house will be saved"

Took a whole afternoon of paging GM's but finally they realized they had to stop being idiots and do the right thing for once.

Now I always re-activate after about 80-85 days, just to be sure.

I love how people can't wait to be the first to jump in the thread and say rude things like "it is your own damn fault"

I think the GM staff should be considerate and realize that not everyone knows every single little programming detail. If a customer re-activates and expects his house to be saved, then that is the job of the Customer Service staff to deliver on that expectation.

It's just smart business. Why **** off a customer if you can easily avoid it?

So you're saying that the fine print is meaningless? If I bring a coupon to a store and they tell me that it expired 2 days ago.. it's their fault and they should honor it anyway?

Like I said in the original post. All the board warriors on this site feel free to throw out your little quips and insults to prove to yourself how witty and clever you are. It really isn't going to change my opinion of the game or of this company one bit.

Oldschool, this is probably too little, too late. However, there's a Q&A in the Knowledgebase on the official UO site that has a bit of helpful information about what to do about a house that stays condemned after you reactivate the account: http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1934. Among other things, it covers some issues involving reactivating accounts that hold more than one house.

Good luck to you and hopefully you'll decide to stick around even though the keep is gone. I guess think of it as a bit of a fresh start and that it saved you some housecleaning. :(

I can understand you being upset and am sorry this happened to you. I personally have never let my accounts go inactive in the 11+ years I have played simply because I don't want to chance losing the things I have worked so very hard for. I would be upset, such as you are, if that happened.

That said, why did you post here? You act like you want sympathy but at the same time you have pretty much known and even invited criticism of what happened and then insulted anyone who did exactly what you thought they would. If you want to warn people not to make the same mistake you did, I can appreciate that. But it seems like you are just egging people to say what you already know, that it is your fault and you should have been more careful or in the least, been more stubborn with the GM to get them to help.

Again let me say I that I am sorry this happened to you.

Anyone can be a tough guy behind a computer, if you have an issue with EA, stop wasting time here and call them....let someone have it that's a live human being.....ya know personally, when you said, you took a break from UO because it became too much to bear......are you serious?? It's a game, not much more.

Anyone who lets Uo consume their life has serious issues.

Oh, your house.....your fault.

The last that I knew, if your house has gone into IDOC mode, reactivating your account would not save your house.
I am not sure about greatly worn mode either.
In both of these cases I would transfer the house to another account.

But with the new housing rules the character has to be over 14 days old.

I have reactivated accounts when the houses were somewhat worn and within 2 days it was back to normal.

I know this does not help you, but if it can help someone else.

Sorry to hear about you keep.

Transferring it would have been the safe thing to do, since it sounded like it was already either greatly worn or IDOC. They have problems every once in while trying to get account ages correct, so there is no way I would have cut it that close on reactivating.

Don't know if they scrapped the plan of making houses start decaying after 30 days of being made inactive instead of the current 90. It was about a year ago when they made the announcement but the last I heard was they ran into some technical issues that had to be fixed.

I was at an Luna IDOC that was about to fall within 1 hour. Some how the owner saved it. They may have transferred it to another account.

Theres a really big difference between flaming someone, taking a pot-shot at someone, and simply saying that it is their fault.

I can understand that it is frustrating - i just dont think you should come here flaming ED/Mythic for something that you messed up. Why are they at fault for not doing something that they stated in print that they wouldnt do...

im almost positive that if u reactivated the account while it was slightly or somewhat worn, then it will refresh itself before it decays

A friend of mine almost let our castle fall.... I took over the account and it still remained in a state of decay so we just transferred it to another account rather not risk losing it..

My personal feeling is don't play that game and just pay the account every month. Not worth the risk..... course if you feel it is worth the risk then why bother put all your most important stuff in your bank drop the rest at the nearest bank or sell it off and drop the house pocketing the gold and put your account on mothballs....

I don't agree with that - it takes two to miscommunicate. House refreshes are not something players do very often and the impact is huge - there's a certain degree of responsibility in the design/support to ensure that the rules aren't misunderstood.

It would be worth trying to contact Joanne_Mythic so that the incident can be reviewed.

Because of the poor service I got from the GM's last night is the entire reason I am posting here. If the GM had told me at that point that the house would not refresh then I would've done the safe thing.

I think the problem is too few gms to page with too many people paging them..

I can't count the number of times I have wondered if they even bothered to read my question/concern or if it auto answered the website info. It has caused me to be creative in how I phrase my requests.

Almost everyone thinking of closing an account would do some research as to how it affects their housing and other issues. The site says that sometimes it can take 24 hours to refresh a house.. my guess is that the OP missed this part.

You can only thank the advent of massive hard drive space that accounts are even saved for months and years after stopping payment. You're lucky you have something to come back to.
