Fun in UO, who's having?

- As the title suggests, I'm just genuinely interested to hear what many of you are doing to have fun in UO lately.

(It's all rainy outside and I'm in the mood to read some harmlessly fun events that are or have recently been experienced in UO.)

Factions battling, thieving, or silver mining? PvP? Begging? Remodelling the home for Fall/Winter? GMing something new? Making some gold coins with an entertaining activity? Tipping or milking some cows? Wondering why your parrot has to hide in your backpack when you sail the seas? Defending our cities from the latest onslaught of chaos?

If you aren't having fun in UO, then you have two easy choices:
1 Find another thread that relates to your complaint
2 Make a new thread

Thanks :)

Let's see... I've been kind of swapping off of a few things...

The daily mini-routines are:

1. Log on with Lockpicker and get daily gain in Yew crypts
2. Log on with character growing plants and tend to them for the day
3. Pull logs and ore off of stump/carts

Greater time investments right now have included:

1. Mining runs through Cove, getting a nice supply of stone now that it stacks (and the weight's been reduced), also gems and ingots as well. Fully plan on building up a good supply of all three for SA. Going to change my main miner/smith character to add in Embuing especially for the skill title as the character in question is named Urza

2. Magincia... Got the rubble piece I wanted (the "boulder" one to go with my actual server birth "boulder"), so now I'm stocking on threads for the future

3. Occasionally I'll catch an invasion... though I did see a pretty cool effect that paralysed me with a crimson dragon... the way it appeared and then ran off screen makes me wonder if it was the real thing or if they have some form of "image" fear attack.

4. Spent most of this past Sunday bashing Ant lions for fertile dirt, gold, ore, and junk metal items.

5. Occasionally hit the Juka town in Ilsh for arcane gems to build up a supply now that they stack.

Plenty to do for me :)

I've been trying to clean out houses and give away stuff and houses so I can shut down accounts when their paid time runs out. But every once in a while I get lured into looking for invasion mobs to fight or doing some cemetery-jumping just to see what happens.

Even though I die fairly often, especially with the cemetery-jumping, it's been fun hanging out with folks, a lot of whom I've never met before, and trying to get the hang of killing stuff and maybe getting a few neat things while not being a nuisance to everyone around me. Don't need any more stuff to sort out later, but the rest of it's been kinda fun.

I'm also still chipping away at getting taming gains on my tamers, hoping to get two of them to legendary and a couple to elder by the end of the year and before I close the accounts.

I think the ones who don't have fun, are the ones who live, breathe, and sleep UO.

That's what I have been doing recently too!

Knock off work, login, tend plants, restock vendors.

Then either go skel liche bashing or TOT depending which item my vendor has run out of. Just finished getting the liche scrolls with all my chars yesterday, including crafters, woot!

Wife having a blast of a time hunting/running/rezzing folks at Sicarii and hoping to get the med webs. Esp when she escapes death when trapped by Sicarii's webs.

I love the skel liches, it's like the Grim reapers in 2006, except this time I don't even get a 1 hour breather and have the TOT and Sicarii to do as well lol.

Where do I begin???? I absolutely love the game so I log in AT LEAST once a day and sometimes more or I play for hours on end when time allows (usually the weekends when I'm not working)

I LOVE Mel...that is like my new favorite thing since getting high speed

I'm doing the new plant thing so I try to keep those alive and although I have the black thumb of death I've managed to save a few

Begging begging begging

Trying to get two tamers to legendary

The new invasion stuff has me a bit confused and not at all sure I wanna go near that crimson thingy ...after seeing the mass bodies lying about this evening I turned tail and ran

Got yet another new home so I'm really trying to get it decorated up nice. Not necessarily with a theme...just nice

Trying to get discord/peace/provo up on one of my older chars...I've put her off WAY too long

There is just always something for me to do and I never get bored so that's my story and I'm stickin' to it :thumbup1:

I'm amazed how all the people left who play the game would rather decorate their pixelated little world than interact and compete with actual people in PvP. Why do people play a MMORPG if all they do is fight monsters and grow plants? WTF?

It's fun to fight monsters in teams. It's fun to decorate a house and invite friends over for homemade cakes. It's fun to grow plants that won't die if I get bored with them for a few weeks. A game is more immersive if it caters to all types of players (see Bartle's thoughts on the different player types).

To reverse your question: it's not possible to fight a dragon or (for most) to decorate a castle in in real life. Why do you play a game to fight other people when you can do that in real life by boxing or doing martial arts?

You spend your time furthing your social status in a game instead of reality. How about hosting a get-together with REAL friends, spend your time decorating your REAL house? I have always believed the people who waste their time meddling in such trivial and worthless things were antisocial in the real world, and from the UO players I have met, its 100% proven. I mean, you look at the real life pictures of the people who grow plants and the people who play to compete with others, and the difference is astonishing.

Please dont take this the wrong way, I'm not blatantly insulting anyone. I just wish people would spend more time furthering their own existence than that of their online alter ego. When I get on, I have one purpose: To find someone and compete against them. I'm on maybe 4-5 hours a week. And I can promise I have a lot more fun and have a lot more excitement, both in game and in reality, than the people who sit there and farm for new items and grow plants.

What I'm currently doing to have fun:

1. Working on a HUGE and tricky player quest.
2. Getting rid of all my uber equipment and going on adventures wearing simple GM-made armor.
3. Exploring dungeons, starting out with merely clothes, bandages and an NPC weapon.
4. Having some fun duels with my guild mates, to test skills and tactics.
5. Going to New Haven, collecting taxes from landlubbers (pet tax, street cleaning tax, liquor tax, anything.)
6. Constantly cleaning out my house to make room and get rid of never-used items.

Well, this is an interesting statement. And, of course, a prejudice. One could also say that people who are constantly looking for competition in game have the urge to prove something to themselves, and what they cannot achieve in real life, they are trying to achieve in a computer game.

Please dont take this the wrong way, I'm not blatantly insulting anyone. My point is: You cannot really judge people from how they are playing game. (Exception: Social behavior. Maybe in-game cheaters will cheat in real life, too.) But saying that house decoraters have no social life, is simply a wrong point of view. Some people just have fun doing that, like others have fun doing PvP, or grandmastering every skill, or collecting rares, or simply chat.

Hmm, right now, training my tamer. Or taking my archer to help spank the skele lich. I've pretty much been on a taming mission the last few weeks. It'll end, and I'll get the house and shop finished but for now, it's taming all the way :)

We each have different things we enjoy in the game - it's as individual as the clothes we wear. Or sandwiches - everyone likes something different, starting with 'to butter both sides, or not to butter both sides' and moving on from there. I don't think you can assume that someone who plays a lot of UO (or whatever) is necessarily anti social in rl. Or doesn't have a rl. Me, I live in a remote location, so I use the net to keep in touch with families and friends, craft in rl, look after my kids (5 of them, 4 living at home) and do lots of other stuff too. One day, I may even find time to sleep!

We all play our own game, and so long as we enjoy it, I don't think anyone has the right to look down on that. I'd even go so far as to say that those who do are arrogant and rude.

3.) Complain about all the fun we are having...

I'm for #3. I've found that with the variety of evil critters and how they are grouped I'm able to play ALL of my characters in these events.

1. My Dread Lord Necro has finally gotten to use his Exorcism spell.
2. I've spent the last two weekend days up till 2am and 4am.
3. My work is suffering cause I'm spending tons of time in-game having fun.
4. I love "tweaking" my characters and being able to run them through a variety of monster types allows me to test armor/wep combos.
5. I didn't get ANY loot when Maginica was leveled but I'm getting some now doing the thread quests.
6. The Crimson Dragon graphics are awsome.

Are there some lag issues, yup. Would I like there always be an invasion in one city. Yes, but then that might lead to more lag... plus you can always head to the local cemetary, or do thread quests when the towns are quiet. Oh, I've not even gotten to that pesky spider yet...

My eyes are bloodshot and I'm exhausted...

DEVS! PLEASE STOP THIS EVENT BEFORE I PLAY MYSELF TO DEATH!!!

Safe Travels, Sam

I am not trying to insult you here either.......
The problem is YOU want people to go pvp. YOU go do it and YOU have tons of fun. We are not all YOU. I could sit for hours decorating and redecorating my house...ya know why??? It's peaceful. Sometimes people want solitude in some of the things they do. I have FOUR children ok? And a husband and a mother who calls me daily. I love and adore each and every one of them. Then lets not mention co-workers and friends. Parties, dinners, etc......The list goes on and on. For me, getting away from all of that is a relief and quite fun. Everyone has a different playstyle. For instance, I know if I walk through the Yew moongate and stand around, I'm pretty sure sooner or later someone is going to attack me. I don't go there. Plain and simple. I stay away because that is not how I want to play the game. It's my choice. I purchased the game and pay them a monthly fee to make it my choice :)

I have been looting, and helping fight the trammel invasions. I did the Liche thing until I had books for all of my mages, got some rubble, got some bats, got some pumpkins, got some trick or treating in.... Got my fame and karma back to max.... Helped kill a few generals with my beggar. Helped kill a couple of crimson dragons with my beggar.... Mostly looted corpses.

The problem is that you think that you dictate the momentum of the thread just because you started it. I do appreciate all the UO player's that are trying to have fun in UO currently, but I'm personally renewing my account every few months to keep my house from falling and hoping that when SA gets here it will contain much need relief to the staleness of this game in the way to decent graphics and a decent ui for starters.

I also make time to grow new plants and doing trick or treating. In between i maintain my virtues and mine, lumber and collect leather. I try to keep the vendors stocked too.

Alot to do and alot of different things. Thats what nice about UO, its not always the same thing over and over. :)

Well, actually I'm having fun redecorating my two new houses ingame. I don't have a problem with spending time trying to decorate my pixelated world. My rl house is a wreck due to working on a new sunroom addition when the budget and work allow.
My rl friends are working lots, and lots, and lots of overtime despite the economy.:cheerleader: It's great for them, so I see them when they have time to visit.

I hope once I'm finished with my island house I can host a few events for friends. I'm fishing up sos's for nets and hoping to host a net toss there sometime soon.
A friend and I are planning some more events once he comes out of chemo. So, it's my job to gather prizes in the meantime.

Had a few invites to go visit on some other shards so I may pop over and do some hunts, fights, and stuff with other friends. Having a new ISP really has opened more possiblities for me in UO.

I'm having fun. For me the most fun I have is when there’s an opportunity to obtain something rare from an event. Even if it’s just a medium spider web that can only be obtained during a three week period of time. It’s also a rare drop during that time. I love this idea, and would like to see more stuff like this done. You’ll see me hunting in that room every night during that three week period. It is a simple item that has high value because of its rareness. A lot of the rubble in magincia had the same concept. I also enjoyed that event very much!

Catskills:
- roleplaying my possessed true britain TormTar, he is one of the marshalls of yew and very busy... collecting silver and killing crimson dragons is a dirty job...
- playing my 911 necro on the invaded towns and in magincia... it is alot of fun to see a unit of 4+ necros completely obliterate the invaders... (then i call my paladin for CD)
- stocking on ore, gems and stone with my crafter... getting some runic kits... while incognito, since he was abducted by the pirates... bloody pirates.
- taking my troubadour everywhere... trying to train discord... but mostly provoking and peacing so my fellow defenders are safe... few monsters can sustain my vocal abilities... fewer women...
- my poor tamer is under the effect of an alac. scroll... so he gets visited by some friends that leave him two bulls every 51 hours... and he is almost legendary... bored too.
- my main pvper retired to SCB and travels about... no more bloodlust or drama... which is a weird change after 10 years of pvp...

Drachenf.
Here i pvp... and I enjoy my 25- ping... the guilds there are also a challenge... and I got a new rep... which I cant post... due to foul language.

My necro-mage does his spawns... and fights when he must.
My abc archer does his pvp...
And I started a tamer... no clue why.
Also finished my crafter... but this one is purely for pvp backup.
Currently contemplating changing my archer to macer... and finishing my stealth archer...

Maybe I'll have a red after all these years... maybe not.

Basically I decided to have one shard for Tram related playing... and another for full pvp.
It worked and I am having a blast...

Last... my Faith in UO is always strong... cheating/scripting is always there but after interacting with so many players, gms, ems, counselors and devs I noticed a major change this year...

The Devs have a Plan.

Cya in game...

Oh... almost forgot... lets all cry... REVERT!!!

I made it clear I wasn't attacking anyone, and my opinion is based on the people I have met that play this game. There is a stark difference between the PvP'ers and those who play for items and PvM. And I said typically this is the case, not always. There will always be exceptions, and maybe the player base has changed since I met these people. If you want, I can go find some pictures from old boards and let you see the difference just to show you where I'm coming from. Anyway, that is probably the last post from me here, I have like 395802458 infractions and I'm sure someone will probably cry again, lol.

Wow, just re-checked this thread and saw that it has turned a little ugly.

As someone said, the beauty of UO is that it caters to many diverse playstyles. Players like Shaun likes PVP to train and hone his skills and reflexes. He identifies and bonds with people that are like him. That makes him happy.

Players like me and the missus like to co-operate with other players to take down tough monsters. Craft and create things that we think is cool. We identify and bond with people that are like us. That makes us happy.

There are grandparents playing UO with their grandchild and loves the fact that they can bond with the younger generation. That makes them happy.

Saying either community is anti-social is incorrect, stereo-typing and will invariably result in them viewing it as an insult.

People that like co-operative play can be very competitive too.

And soldiers are not chest thumping brutes that go around bashing people up.

Case in point: I started learning martial arts at 10 and joined the army at 20 for 2 and a half year tour. I do not PvP in Diablo nor UO. In fact, my experience has actually helped me keep my cool and control in trying situations. Because of the confidence I have in resolving problems/defending myself if things go to hell, I tend to go for the peaceful solution first, always.

Well, that, plus the fact that a cozy middle-aged corporate life have lost me much of my stretch, and my wife has been poking fun at me for the past few years because my six-pack has converged into a single entity. :gee:

[/end know-it-all bragging mode]

Now let's get this thread back on track.

I am still doing the skel liches since there's a dateline and someone has destroyed the totem on at least 2 of the cemetaries, arghhhh. Now more people are bunched up in lesser graveyards, making things a lot more interesting heh. It's a blast! Wife was doing a happy dance as she got 4 med webs so far, and it's 2 of each too!

I guess the fun in UO for many players is...

... Fighting on the Boards!

It would be an interesting vote, but I'm sure that the candidates would be a who's who of Siege Perilous posters.

Man, that's a fun forum to read for the drama alone!

The question was, specifically, about how we were spending time in UO, right?

• Working the invasion.

• Galen bought a new shield yesterday.

• Farming Skeletal Liches (sadly I gave up trying to drop a Skull Totem).

• Laughing at people who go on message boards devoted to MMOs to complain about people who spend time playing MMOs, in a thread where what you were doing in an MMO was the specific subject. (This one is not exactly in-game but close.)

• Always looking at options to improve Galen's equipment.

can we cool this down a bit people?
'fun' means different things to different people.

my idea of fun lately has been gathering up threads in anticipation of the rebuilding of Magincia - I was quite cheered by the disappearance of the debris.
saving most of the threads towards enhancing the 8 corrupted cloaks I managed to get in Moonglow. I'm not that interested in the rubble
Completing the Yew quest just once, just to be able to say 'I've done it'.
Collecting assorted trick or treat goodies, including a pair of webs that I promised to a friend.
Working with my husband to down a few skeletal lich.
Meantime keeping my plants tended and vendors stocked so that I may reliably supply the basic needs of other players. - I wouldn't say that part was 'fun' so much as pleasant to do. I enjoy crafting.
pvp for me is not fun. I don't have the aggression, speed of thought or dexterity to find that aspect of the game enjoyable.

I don't, however, expect everyone to share my views on how the game should be played, with the exeption of the belief that, whatever character type you play, you should play honestly.

Ya know what? You are so right.

I am watching an IDOC right now and talking to a guy about these boards that I go to and about how it seems some folks just want to be downright mean to other people. Having an intelligent disagreement is one thing but to blatantly be nasty is quite another and in this case I believe "some" people are being nasty to a guy who simply has his own opinion. I guess it's ok to hurt someone through the computer screen and have no conscious feelings about it because, hey you don't have to look them in the eye now do you? Nope...didn't think so.
Oh and I'm gonna run get my bods real fast before this peach of a house falls :)
