As a collector mind you, when I see 100s of an item that had 3 originals, why bother arguing against it? I see at least 10 people on my shard on a daily basis with an "ari" shroud. I see plenty of tal'keesh shrouds. If they're duped with MODS that give only the rich people an advantage over lessor pvpers, why not? It was there decision to invest in duped rares and it was some collectors idea to dupe the rare. Punishment for both cases

I do sympathyze for the owners of the originals of the items listed but at least theres wont say [replica].

Yeah... considering I've got the original Subdue from the Great Lakes event, and it's been in my possession the whole time, not been passed around to be duped, et cetera, seeing a "Subdue [Replica]" really, REALLY sort of makes me sick to my stomach.

This is just more proof that the Dev Team currently in charge of UO is clueless, and further proof that I'm spending way too much per month on Ultima Online.

Perhaps it's time for me to consider the exit route too.

EDIT - And I know some people will argue "EM items should never have existed in the first place." But see, to me, the item isn't so much about its properties, it's about its uniqueness, and the fact that it is attached to a very specific event and time in UO's history.

If the best that the UO team can come up with to combat duping is to destroy the intrinsic value of everything that was every part of any aspect of UO's history by providing "replicas" of them, well, that's really unacceptable to me. It's worse than offering limited-time only pre-order items that they turn around and sell later.

I really cannot convey how completely disappointed I am with the DevTeam right now, but I'll say it's a disappointment at a level that makes my disappointment with "It's not a mirror" seem downright supportive.

Ahhhh... as the owner of a REAL Oak shroud (handed to me by the GM at the event), this isn't the best thing ever, but at least it does say replica. That said however, I don't like giving into dupers by making the stuff common though. It says to the players... instead of fixing the problem, we will just flood the market with cheap knock offs so the dupers can't make as much off of them (even though they already made billions off them during the years and years this has been going on already). First off it is the sloppy and easy way out and secondly, it doesn't address even a tiny part of the items that are duped or the fact that gold is often duped. I can go to a certain vendor in Luna and over and over find marble tables, wall blood, tall statues and so on on the vendor. One will sell, few weeks later another is on there. Yea I am believing that this vendor who ALWAYS has at least 4 75 to 100 mill gold items on it at all times and has the same items on it again and again and again actually has access to that many real items?? NOT HAPPENING!

I would prefer a true way for fixing duping be explored instead of trying to fix this with gum and ducktape.

As long as these "replicas" don't have the same appearance as the originals (the blue/yellow hue), then they MIGHT not devalue them for the "true rare collectors," but regardless, they will devalue them for the true historians that think handing out replicas for the sake of handing out replicas is ludicrous.

But that still does not mean that what Kratos is suggesting isn't what will happen. Perhaps the items that are determined to be dupes by some internal mechanism will be reassigned that tag or ID number from the Cliloc file.

Say there's some server-side check done on a Calm. It's determined to be a dupe so now the item is reassigned with a new name: Calm [replica]. I could foresee something like that taking place.

• Given everyone a chance at these items. With their properties they are sure to be valuable items, almost no matter how common they are. And I bet they won't be that common.

• Screwed over dupers.

• Not screwed over rare dealers too badly (a little bit but not much). Reputable dealers of non-duped true rares will continue to sell and trade the originals among themselves. But people who wanted these items only to show off or to have their properties aren't going to be 80+ million for them (a few hundred million in some cases) just for their use, when there's these copies about that are more easily obtained.

I'm thinking I like this. Especially after looking up the stats for many of these items.

what would be ideal is if they are re-releasing all those rares as replicas, AND turning duped ones into replicas. It will deter the dupers and people with true rares get to keep their true rares. Its win win.

Eh make no mistake - lot of honest collectors will be making big sacrifices. First they were screwed over by dupers and now whatever value the items still had will probably take a plunge too. However, unlike what *some* people might think, we are not all greedy and we understand the huge risks associated with collecting. We also understand that this perhaps is the best way to deal with the dupes. Not the fairest, as that would involve simply deleting all the duped copies which would in turn reward the collectors who chose to stay true and not dupe their items. But that would cause a giant outcry amongst people who bought the duped versions. So, we will willingly get screwed as it is in the best interest of the game. But one should not trivialize this sacrifice either.

For example, I know a collector who won a lot of these items in this list straight from the events. He has never sold them and held on to them. If he had decided to sell them, like many others did, then he would have benefited very nicely. Now, if these items are released with a [replica] tag (as speculated) then his collection will most definitely further lose value and "cool factor". Yet he is happy with the changes as long as it hurts the dupers most - as there is nothing more a honest collector dislikes in this game.

Sheridan, that would be awesome. Yes, it would suck to discover something I believed to be a bona fide rare was, in fact, a dupe, BUT the greater good would be served by identifying and labelling it as such.

Eh make no mistake - lot of honest collectors will be making big sacrifices. First they were screwed over by dupers and now whatever value the items still had will probably take a plunge too. However, unlike what *some* people might think, we are not all greedy and we understand the huge risks associated with collecting. We also understand that this perhaps is the best way to deal with the dupes. Not the fairest, as that would involve simply deleting all the duped copies which would in turn reward the collectors who chose to stay true and not dupe their items. But that would cause a giant outcry amongst people who bought the duped versions. So, we will willingly get screwed as it is in the best interest of the game. But one should not trivialize this sacrifice either.

For example, I know a collector who won a lot of these items in this list straight from the events. He has never sold them and held on to them. If he had decided to sell them, like many others did, then he would have benefited very nicely. Now, if these items are released with a [replica] tag (as speculated) then his collection will most definitely further lose value and "cool factor". Yet he is happy with the changes as long as it hurts the dupers most - as there is nothing more a honest collector dislikes in this game.

If some of these items were unique or close-to-unique, and held by rares collectors, how did the dupers get ahold of them to begin with?

Someone posted some months back, arguing that legit collectors had, for good sums of money, loaned out rares to be duped.

On the one hand, it sounded credible. (If a fellow rares collector vouched for the duper not just walking away with the item; or if RL money was used; etc.)

On the other hand, though, it didn't sound credible at all. (Awful risk, even if RL money was at stake; and among the rares collectors I know not a single one of them would do that, though granted I know like 2 or 3. lol)

Do you have any insight?

As long as these "replicas" don't have the same appearance as the originals (the blue/yellow hue), then they MIGHT not devalue them for the "true rare collectors," but regardless, they will devalue them for the true historians that think handing out replicas for the sake of handing out replicas is ludicrous.

There are very few items that are held on by the person who wins them at an event for the entirety of its existence. Eventually, someone will get bored and trade it for some other shiney. Eventually, someone quits and sells everything or let their houses fall. As years go by some things fall into the wrong hands and as long as there is a way to dupe in the game some things will eventually get duped. And if that item was not a unique then someone else somewhere is getting screwed big time.

There are thousands of seer/event items out there - many owned by people who don't even realize its rarity. It is not possible to track everything and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

There have been a few in the past. I wouldn't call them legitimate. Annoying thing is that it is not easy to spread the word on such people as all the rules are always to their advantage. Like on Stratics you can't call someone out by name as it would be considered a personal attack.

Ahh... but if a [Duped] tag can be added to an item, it becomes a simple matter to flag the duper and delete items automatically.

BUT, we really don't know at this time what "Replica" means... so don't go getting your knickers in a twist just yet.
