We all know scripting is an issue in UO...

It's an issue in most MMO's, what can be done about it....

I found out that Blizzard actually won $6million in a court case vs the creators of a popular BOT program that was being used in WoW, why can't EA/Mythic do the same...Put a monetary damage amount on Scripting and attempt to reclaim it from the creators of the more popular Script Engines.....

That is interesting...I read an article the other day about a guy who plays WoW. Does all of his own raids. Is his own guild... and runs 36 characters at once. 11 different computers/monitors. Costs him $5000+ a year in subscriptions and will cost $1500 for the new expansion... crazy.

But for the scripting... maybe they're too lazy, don't care because it's an older game...I dunno how much WoW gold sells for but maybe they don't care because UO gold has become so...cheap. I remember when UO gold would sell for lots of money, now it's petty cash. It's like buying a taco from the value menu at Taco Bell. Do I want to buy a volcano taco...or buy 1 million virtual gold in UO?

Yea but if they were to do it, all the fund should and could be channeled back into UO. Also I got a good feeling that if they were responsible for a couple of million dollars in damages because of their creation then it wouldn't be publicly available, and support for updated clients would stop.

Ya... dunno =/

Unless they've got some kind of hidden deal w/one another...

I scratch your back if you'll scratch mine. Maybe one of the creators of such programs work at a really good restaurant and hooks the other up. Or maybe they run an 'escort' service... not the kind you find in UO.

Interesting.
However, youd have to look if the BOT script is sold or given out.
Also EA collects money from scripters too. So they are paying.
And sadly, once you get to court, you need to demonstrate you have a clear policy and procedure for dealing with scripting or behavior.

That is... EAs responses are all over the place on how they handle scripting. Sloppy policy and procedure is a field day for lawyers.

It's a sold program but I doubt that would matter. Since the use of unauthorized 3rd party programs is prohibited in the ToS, they could try and claim damages based on, Man hours lost to fighting and investigating script usage.

On thing your right about though is the sloppy enforcement would make it harder. For Example I doubt EA could win in court vs an Emulation package. They've never enforced it, and they have been around for close to 10 years. That implies consent, on the other hand though the do round up and ban scriptors, and do busts and deletions of scripted items on a semi regular basis, usually once or twice a year on a large scale. This might be enough to show a consistent stance against it.

The problem is at least 50% or more use said program, it's free, doesn't support any kinda of farming or unbalanced script on the site (have to write your own), and only one person created it and updates it, and he doesn't live anywhere near the us.. so might be a pain to sue him...

I still believe they need to do something to get his product from meddling in their game. I know it's open source now, one of the devs should get a copy and break it down and find a way to block it.

I'm quite sure they have copies and know how to detect it if they want to... Punk Buster was implemented to but then discontinued... remember?

From rumors I heard there were legal issues involved with that..along with the mass hysteria that broke out among the players that were worried EA was going to search their porn collections.....

The creator of the program already stated that the program was easily detectable, but there were so many people using it that EA couldn't afford to ban everybody using it... When punk buster was talked about, the creator actually offered to work with EA on making it a uo-pro app, he would fix it so it couldn't be abused. He then went on to basically say that if they tried to stop it that he would make it open source (it's not atm) and show everybody how to update it and change it so it wouldn't be detectable.. shortly there after punk buster went poof...

sounds very interesting but I think EA might have problems collecting for UO as aren't/weren't most of the script programs free?
