I'm just returning to UO and I'm really surprised at the biggest change I've seen...on Lake Austin everyone moved to Luna and no one talks to anyone. I've tried asking questions re: how to refresh my memory on new things but no one answers. And sadly, the Stratic's boards are so far behind in thier information I can't seem to "catch up".

I would have posted this on the Lake Austin forum but the last post there is 2006, lol

You'll find that most of those folks at Luna Bank on LA will never answer you, because a majority of the time they aren't actually there. You'll get to know who they are, and then you'll learn to simply not even bother. I would point out a few names, but alas that 's not allowed....

Actually if you had posted on the L A fourms you might have made some good contacts. As for when the last posting was it was yesterday. Makes me wonder if you really looked at the correct forum. Our shard on the 1st did a shard get together. Which was the most current posting. If you need help, Rowan or Lessa will always answer. Good guilds to get help from are UMP, MCH, KOL.

My guess is they were going by the date of the top posts, which are stickies, and the bottom sticky is from 2006 - annd it never occurred to them that a post from "Today" meant "Today" - especially when it mentioned a date this week in the title.

That, or they've set up their default view to only show posts from Today (instead of the default week), and their time was set to make it show as yesterday.

Or, last possibility - they had it marked all read and had their forum view set to new posts only.

excellent point. I hate to admit it I never even look at the dates. If it is a red post I haven't read it yet. Well hopefully I'll run into them in Luna, Cove, Haven and be able to offer help. I've noticed that CoC have been in New Haven alot helping players. I'd just hate for them to give up on use thinking we are all rude and stuck up. When really we are a very friendly group.

Hell, we're so friendly, I think that if you traced the shard of origin for the UO Stratics staffers current & previous, LA would be in the top two shards. The Player's Corner forum, which is for questions about the game, is moderated by two of us from LA.

lake austin is one of the most dead shards out there, not too much pvp either getting a little better now

Honesty, I'm always starting New characters on New shards. People talk quite a bit on those shards !

Erm, On LS, they are likely to get you killed doing a peerless within 5 minutes of your arrival in Haven !

Depends on when you go though, it's not always good to show up when everyone is asleep.

When I came back about 2 years ago. Started back with no chars and no items. I met a couple nice people in Fel of all places who gave me gold to build a house. Course during the conversation I happened to mention that I was on a return to uo 7 day trial and I said If I can't make enough money in a week to build a house then I'm not staying. Well they gave me 100k so I would stay. Perhaps your just on the wrong shard.

LA's a Friendly shard - just that with such a low population (as compared to, say, the east coast shards) that there are some times when you won't find more than 1 or 2 "real" people in Luna, and often those are crafters. If you see one of the characters from my sig, just introduce yourself, and I can help you out with what's new on the non-Fel side of things.

Keelia ... I'll come a-lookin' for you late next week sometime. I play LA but am on 72-hour weeks for just one more week! Then I can play some and perhaps get you back into the game in style.

The pecking order on my shard seems to go like this:

New Haven bank: Q&A central (and gathering point for some guilds before heading out)
Brit Bank: casual hangout (if there is anyone there)
Luna bank: high end banksitting (I find it a rather cold and unappealing place)

I don't know why - But in UO, I find it very personal to talk to people, it doesn't happen in any MMO - And, I must say I get quite nervous, therefore I kindof stay out of the way of people. But, if you get talking to me - I don't mind a nice chat.

I know what you mean. If I need something from a tailor or smith, Ill see one standing around, but they wont respond.

I think a lot of people use the banks to sit their character while they do RL stuff. I know I do.

Its best to use the shard forums and go to a player run event on the shard to meet others.

The two shards I play on (Pacific and SP) have plenty of people to talk with. On Pacific, I was standing outside a formerly huge and well-stocked, but now empty vendor house just outside Luna and came across another person. We struck up a conversation about what happened to the vendors (the other person used to have vendors there) and just had a generally nice chat. On SP, every night at the bank in Luna I can find people who greet me and talk with me. One individual even invited me to his house for a good chat about the old days and he proceeded to offer to find some items for me since I was new. *shrugs* I dunno... I don't seem to have the same issue you do.

Atlantic goes...
New Haven, newer players with vets popping in and out to answer questions and drop items. A few odd role players drop in periodically to spice things up.

Britain, occasional bank sitter burning counts, folks parking to run do a rl chore, and then folks buying/selling or just standing about chatting.
(An odd herder driving stock through, or a beggar asking for a hand out so he can afford medicine for his pet mongbat is not uncommon either.)

Luna, count burners usually hugging the wall near the gate. Folks inside doing business and banking, and the stable is always busy.

Peeps even talk in dungeons...hmm...ya know..you might not want to come here. We will talk your ear off and leave you pining for the nice quiet shard you left.

If you can't find someone in game to answer your questions you can always ask on the forums.

T'Amon - here's a blast from the past, and I have no idea where I got it.

I was looking for a pad of columned accounting paper to keep track of skill gains (I was doing a skill gain log entry), and found something similar. Where it came from, I have no idea.

A pad of IBM "FORTRAN Coding Form" sheets, for writing out FORTRAN code to be KEYPUNCHED INTO A CARD PUNCHER.

Even when I took FORTRAN in the mid-80s, we were already using vi Editor, so I know it wasn't a leftover from school....

Now, why would anyone wanna go with a strange group of people, standing around yacking, on a crazy string of hunts?

Beware of standing around Haven too much on LS. It's possible to be kidnapped and dragged into a dungeon, peerless, or spawn. We'll talk your ears off, make sure you aquire ample loads of death shrouds, and dump all the loot on you to carry.
For some reason though, people just don't seem to enjoy that as much anymore.

Hi Sheridan - sorry to go OT but I just had to ask you about this vendor house since I just discovered that it was vacant last night - totally caught me by surprise as I've spent a LOT of money there for a long time. Did the guy you were talking to know what happened? Just wondering. Thank you!

*edit* I think I just found my answer in another thread where the owner of this house (I think) was bickering heavily with one of the vendor owners...it appears the house owner had concerns over his renters cheating or otherwise exploiting game mechanics. Can't say I blame him for being cautious.
