Call me sentimental when it comes to my shard (Pac), but when it goes I go with it.

My interests are for the shard, and keeping it's integrity. Not becoming another production shard. Is that selfish? Not at all, but nice try...la
Just another production shard.. Eh? I am sorry but my shard is not JUST ANOTHER production shard. There is a very good reason that I play there and there only. It is very distinct from every other non-siege ruleset shards and it has its own integrity - so do every other shards. If you cannot comprehend that very basic concept then yes you are being selfish because you are not capable of thinking about anyone else besides your own group and your idea of what constitutes a community is rather messed up.

Agreed. Every shard has a very different personality, in terms of the player culture.

Just because San Francisco, Atlanta, and New York are all big cities, that doesn't make them the same to live in. And just because Spokane, WA isn't as big of a city, and doesn't have as many people in it as the other three do, that doesn't mean it should go away and the people should move. They're there because that's where they want to live.

*thinks*

Actually, bad example. I've BEEN to Spokane. :loser:

Just because, um, Eugene, OR isn't as big of a city as the other three...

Consolidation seems unnecessary to me since players can already transfer characters themselves to any shard of their choice, so if you are unhappy with the shard you are on you can simply move to another one. Lots of players choose to play the shard they are on, obviously if they wanted to play on a busier or higher populated shard they would move to it, something which many players have been doing for years.

Also players can play as many shards as they want, you can easily create characters on more than one shard with items like advanced character tokens and alacrity scrolls, then if you find a shard you prefer to your current one you can transfer remaining characters and items over.

These "I love empty shards!" people are a joke. Just goes to show that SOMEONE will argue against any idea. You could come on and post "Everytime I boot up UO my computer gives me an electric shock and it sucks!" and someone would post to tell you how they love it.
Please.. this isn't even an intelligent comment.. not worthy of the effort it took to type it.

I do wonder however, if you added up the populations of all the "small" shards... would you find far more people playing them than in a single large shard.. say for example Atlantic?

It seems like the same argument for living in big cities vs. small towns... By a 5:1 margin.. Americans live in small towns.. the numbers in UO may be surprising.

Yep, just another production shard. There are two rulesets that shards fall under, my comment was that i thought it would be a good idea to bring those shards in the same time zone, with the same rulesets together. Sure Siege would not merge with another, but if there were another shard like Siege that could merge, sure I'd be for it.

I have played on production shards in the past and yes, I do understand and know how other players think. I agreed with the premise of the initial poster, so no need to try and back up your opinion with someone else's quote...because it doesn't apply to this situation...la

I really can't fathom people against merging shards. I play Pacific which is generally considered the highest population on the west coast. The shard is DEAD. The vast majority of all towns (save luna) - EMPTY Imagine a massively multplayer game where the towns only inhabitants are NPC's stumbling around in circles. Thats what we have! {insert pancake slap here}.
You think it's dead now, wait til SA comes out and they add another facet to the shards.

I think there is too much land mass as is, and we know that they aren't going to draw enough people in with the expansion to fill up the servers.

This has probably been posted before and I'm not sure it's possible but I believe this game would seriously improve for west coast players if some sort of server merge was considered.

I am a fairly new UO player (4 months) but old time gamer who has really, REALLY been enjoying UO after all of the cookie cutter games I have been playing for the last 15 years. My only real complain other than lack of attention from support staff is the fact that the population seems VERY low on the west coast servers.

I started on Napa Valley with some RL friends who got me into the game but the problem is we play at different times. My guild search turned up basically nothing and no real interest from anyone.

Someone told me that Pacific was the most populated server on the west coast. I made a new character and even though new haven was a ghost town and the luna action seemed light I started a new necro mage, got him up to GM, placed a Fel house 2 weeks later.... only to have the same problem as Napa Valley. Can't find anyone around, can't find a guild... nothing to do but solo....

So one day on a lark I made a character on Atlantic... WOW! People all over new haven, guilds recruiting... met some cool people and was picked up in about 30 mins into an active guild doing major spawns. I wasn't looking for gear or cash, just some group PvM and PvP activities. I seriously wish I could stay but living in California the 200+ ping is KILLING me and I can barely move in Luna sometimes without constant stuttering.

It seems that the one place where there is any action is technically out of my reach and I really think the folks here on the west coast would enjoy and support some sort of merge that would increase our server pops to somewhere above graveyard status.

Once again this is just some thoughts to consider. I love this game and hope to enjoy it into the future.

Peace,

Locker

I don't think 4 months is enouth time to make a single compleated char if you went to 3 shards. Your friends must have been happy to play Napa Vally or they would have asked you to a diff. shard I would think.

As far as Pac I just logged in there and found 9 diff. guilds at Luna. {GoL, RAW, O^S, PaP, K*F, KoK, FL, Eif, L=S} at the same time. I only stayed long enough to try and get the guild marks and back out.

Near as I can figure you and them hunted as a groupe. When they no longer hunted together with you could not find others to fill the help they was.

How many was in the guild they and you was in? Maybe you could have hunted with other guild members.

As far as the ping problem why didn't you look for a shard that was closer to you. Great Lakes is much closer. I am not telling you to play there. It is just one tha you may like among others that you would like.

As stated before not everyone likes the same thing. If they did everyone would drive the same car. I think that UO being diversified is one reason so many like it over others and keep coming back. Some people are more capeable of playing the less populated shards. Almost like being out in the suburbs as opposed to the cities. I know that some people don't like being very far from stores , and others it don't bother.

I like Dispise for a dungeon. The reason is that waiting for people in New Haven bores me. I find that most people use Dispise or Shame to get started. That is 2 places you can find people that start new and you can tell if they need help.

They are new to UO and are glad to have someone start them out by suggesting skills give them armor or what ever they need to get them on the right foot. I stopped hunting there with a mage or sword. I trained a ferret to kill anything short of the Ogre Lord, Titan, Cyclops, and the Acid eles. He don't do enough damage to kill them. If people are new they ask about that ferret. Then you look at the armor. You know they are new.

I have seen UO evolve to what it is now. I know why the shards they made for the most part and feel they should be left as they are. If you want the one your on to have more people go get frinds to join in.

As far as KR running people off. I think makeing changes to the shards would do a better job. People that leave because of KR once it is ready most likely be back. Why learn a new game and new UI when you only need to learn the UI if you stay.

Change the shards and you will also change the people they play and have fun with. Many of them being older players.

I think the best way to change the shards is to fill them up.

Exactly,

They really need to stop spreading the playerbase out. They should just take some of the more popular places in the Tukono Islands, slap them somewhere in Tram/Fel and delete that entire facet.

The same could be done with Doom. Move Doom to Tram/Fel and delete Malas. The great upside of that is no more Luna :loser:

Can't say I'd agree, not in this game anyway. UO is one of the few MMOs whose shards offer unique worlds as opposed to the static and identical servers other games provide.

In my case a server mege is out of the question. Oceania is the only one of its kind.
