But that would take a Dev with creativity. But sadly, they only have that when they're just a regular stratics poster...*rethought*

signed. Where i live we have only to seasons, hot and very hot. The only time the leaves changed is when the plants die. So it would be wonderful to go home to the game and see fall:)

What would be better... a line in the next publish's release notes stating "Seasons have been added. You will notice shifts in the scenery throughout the year to coincide with the seasons in the northern hemisphere. You will also notice NPCs changing their outfits, and animal and monster migrations. Also, UO time now works properly, NPCs will act accordingly (sleeping and eating - though there will always be somebody in most shops), and some monsters will appear more or less often depending on the time of day."

Yeah great. Its spring here. Seeing autumn leaves would be silly.

Well, in theory you would make the seasons local to the server... so Aussie servers would receive Spring while North American servers would receive Fall and so on.

That's some good stuff, just simple things like shopkeepers closed during the night...damn just a little tweaking could have made this game untouchable...

Yep... simple things that Ultima did in 1991 (U6) and maybe even earlier that would have made UO seem MUCH more alive.

Is anyone else ever offended when posts like these pop up, and Devs simply refuse to even respond in them? Are the devs reading this going, "holy crap, how are we so stupid not to think of things like this?", or are WE the actual problem and the devs are reading this going " Holy crap, these Stratics posters are so stupid, they think that anything can be implemented in this game. Don't they know how hard this would be to code?"

Sorry, but threads like these need to stay on the front page, instead of being replaced by multiple Happy B-day UO postings which Stratics posters have to create before an EA employee even responds. *shameful*

Oh that brings back fond memories of previous Ultima games. You needed to sleep and did indeed sleep and if you went into a shop at night there was no one there to help you. You had to come back when they were open!

Personally, I'd just like to see them get rid of the 'a fierce storm approaches' crap, with it's single stream of blue or white dots that float through my house.

Seasons would require new art work, so you know its a dream that'll never happen.

Seasons wouldn't require new art.
Standard UO = Summer.
Winter = was done last year.
Spring = more flowers.
Fall = colored trees.

The hard part comes because the terrain and trees are all statics, and UO isn't built to allow statics to have multiple states.

It would be nice. Those are the little things that makes you feel at home and the lack of them just confirms the fact that this game is dying slowly and noone is trying to (or going to) save it.

You asked the question...

I think it's posts like this that is the answer.

There are way too many fatalists on the boards, and no matter what is said by anyone from EA/Mythic, there is always someone that comes back with some smart remark. Who would want to post anything when they are criticized no matter what they do?

Oh... and while I'm in such a great mood, how in the hell is the fact that there is no change in seasons (hasn't been since day 1) proof that the game is dying?

I'm sure I'll regret saying the above later, but right now, it feels right.

Fatalist? Have you seen the lack of support this game has? Have you noticed how cheaters go unnoticed and unpunished for long periods of time despite our best effort? What other game does this happen in?

I'm sure it's my fault for noticing....Perhaps i will just go back to being quiet and just pay my monthly fee and take whatever i get :coco:

I'll tell you one game that I know has plenty of cheaters that go pretty much unpunished for long periods of time. World of Warcraft. There are people selling gold for real money all over the place, and little is done. Keyloggers run rampants. Bots sits there for days collecting money. It's all there, same as UO. Nothing new or unique to UO. In fact, I think people have this false sense that WoW is somehow superior to UO and doesn't suffer from a lot of what UO suffers from. I can attest to the fact that WoW has just about every problem UO faces.

You do realize that your "UO is dying" statement has been said several times a day for at least the past seven years, right? And yet, people still have and play multiple accounts, people are still buying gold for real cash (which personally boggles my mind), and people are still enjoying the game.

Oh... and you never answered on how you deduced that the lack of season changing is proof that UO is dying? I'd love to hear how you put those two together.

Ultima 5 is where they introduced the sleeping NPC's and people going about their lives in their shops & homes. It was something else! You would go into a home and see ZzzzZzz, while they slept in their beds at night. I would think UO had that intention, but not put forth.

Ok we get it, you live and breath in Felucca. I think the hole "dead and deserted" look of Felucca is what made it so unappealing to those that left and never returned. And imo, it's one of the ugliest things about the facet.

I know EA have done it before they gave us snow - and I know that they have done it in games like the Sims online so it should not be too hard for them to branch out and give UO seasons. I guess the issue would be that UO time does not run the same as our day to day time. And who's calendar I mean in Australia now its Spring.

Seasons would be a good touch...though if I'm dreaming about things that would be nice to have waiting for me at the end of the day a few other things come to mind.

Seasons were originally worked on in (I believe) 1999 (or there abouts) by a UO Dev named Pandemonium, however only the Spring version was completed and released as a test client (also the same test clients that added in the "big window" (800x600 game window) and blackspace, colored lighting, and dark nights).

The system never made it into the game, however the Spring season DID make it in as the terrain style of Trammel.

The second quasi-attempt was the snow cover in 2006.

In KR, for a time there was rain and cloud effects for weather, but those have been taken out (I'd personally like to see them put back in though).

I've long been a proponent of small (small meaning that they're not really active ingame content, just background stuff) things in a game that help add to the "life" of the game. Some game dev teams understand these little things, others tend not to.

Honestly with UO, I think they try to do so many other things that are considered either more important or more "active" that environmental effects continually take a back seat.

Sucks that that seems to be how it is because once they were done, it'd be a HUGE plus to UO to have a coherent world with seasonal effects rather than the zone-based independant sectors like you see in games like WoW where the climate changes inconsistently between one area and the next.

Granted in UO terms (specifically the Britannian facets (Trammel/Felucca)), the world only consists of the Northern Hemisphere (based on climate distribution seen ingame and disregarding the map-wrap physics weirdness), but even just that is more coherent than what you see in some other games.

Up to this point I was thinking, 'hell ya, reds everywhere!!!...'...'other guilds that would actually be at war with another guild?...cool!'...'not sure what a yellow would be...tell me more...'

as the season of summer gives way....

Well, that's advanced technology that only became possible in the 80's on 64k computers. You can't expect such complicated additions when there are more important things like balancing PvP. They've been working on PvP for 10 years, only a few more adjustments and it will be perfect. Besides, dynamic NPC's are so 1999.

Haaahaaa! You gave me a good chuckle!
