UO vs Warhammer

Ok after a friend (who started UO together with me years ago) has been harassing me for months to give WAR a try when it starts and me being a Warhammer-Reader for years - I am doing the trial atm...

To be honest I was pleasantly surprised.
Thinking it would be a pure Wow-Clone I have noticed that EA/Mythic IS capable of bringing a fairly well working game out at Release...
Why the hell was KR such a f*** up ??

I thought I would get motion-sickness but I didnt.
2 things I dont like so much are:
Its a level-grind (yes its fun at the beginning because its immerse and has a good storyline, but its still leveling...)
PvP (I am on a open RvR Pvp server) is fun but dieing doesnt really hurt ;)

If I were EA/Mythic I would seriously (VERY SERIOUSLY) considering using the WAR-Engine for UO........

With UO´s 360° gameplay and WAR Graphics - UO would have exploding sub-rates !!

Is it one thing to start a fresh game from zero. Quite another to rebuild one around everyone's exsisting pixels. Just my opinion. *nods*

WAR and UO:KR use the same engine.
KR was just much more rushed, and had to work nicely with the existing 2D engine.

"Death doesn't hurt much"... Hmmmmmkay totally and instantly ignoring this, it's just thread war bait about insurance and all.
Moving on to where you ask why KR can't be like that.

Why UO isn't better balanced?
Why UO has no anti-cheating mechanism?
Why did they ditch Professions and Diminished Returns?
Let's go all the way. Why don't we have better skills in the place of Item ID and all that?

Because people whined 24/7 until they were "heard".

And that's why KR doesn't have good graphics. Because people play(and run farm-bots) on ridiculous systems. Wait for the "I QUIT"'s once SA launches and is even ONE TINY SPEC more demanding than Tetris 3D.

Consider your question answered.

Several points made, need to be made, and need to be emphasized:

1) Backwards Compatibility - Again, as stated, WAR is from scratch. They don't have to worry about incorperating previous systems into their code. They test and implement new things with no fear of recourse.

2) Low System Requirements - One thing WoW did well was ensure it was compatible with a lot of older systems. UO simply takes that a step beyond WoW by being built on an engine designed over a decade ago. As we saw when KR launched, more than a few users still have those low end system, so even if KR was immaculate, they couldn't have run it without buying new systems. Hell, even I couldn't run KR well enough. I had to buy new systems to play WAR.

3) WAR is 3D - UO was never designed to be a 3D game. Too many issue would arise in trying to build a 3D game client. Ergo, it will never look as good, no matter how nice they make 2d look, because the depth and feel just can't be found in a 2D game like it can in a 3D one.

4) I may be wrong, but I'm fairly certain the team that built KR isn't the same team that used the same engine to build DAoC and WAR. They likely aquired the liscense to use the engine when they originally aquired Mythic, and as such, didn't have the experience Mythic has with the tool.

All that being said, the only thing that will ever "look good" is UO2. And that's just not in the cards.

Heh.. I've seen that idea thrown around a bit. I don't agree.

Darkfall Online = Darkfall Online.

They may have been inspired by and incorporate some elements of UO, but no. It's not UO2. It never will be.

and don't forget, WoW isn't done yet, there's more coming.

SA needs to be a finished product with a UO feeling UI, so it doesnt cost em a lot of vets. And it needs to be a finished product that works good and looks good, so it will draw new people. And it needs marketing, and maybe, just maybe, UO could be put on all the Mythic websites and stuff?

But I have misgivings about SA and its release. Let's face it, it was announced over a year ago, and then, total silence. Then at the townhall, they announced SA was coming...lol
And, they slipped up, and said for us to give em ideas on what we wanted to see in SA, which to some, indicated it wasn't even developed yet or was in some very early stage of development. Now, call me an arse (again) but I will say this: (let me do it this way)

IF it takes until the 11th anniversary to get 10th anniversary rewards out, and
IF it takes 2 months to get a *piece* of pub 55 out, and
IF it takes 3 months, to get a *piece* of ongoing live event out, and
IF it takes over a year to announce an expansion that was announced over a year ago, and
IF as it appears, there has been little to no work done on that expansion,
THEN why should we have any confidence that SA will be released anytime sooner than 2 years down the road? And can we have any confidence, that it will be a client that is finished and operational and UO-like?

Carry on, I got it off my chest :p

I personally have no desire to purchase or try another EA product given recent statements by Jacobs.

Darkfall is a joke- so far. I am not at all impressed, neither by the screenshots and interviews nor by actual game footage.. Beta or otherwise.

Sure it is passed as an enhanced pre-AoS Ultima Online but at heart it's just an aspiring Lineage 2 clone.

Just like with STALKER(which is not an MMO), if it was released when it was initially claimed it would be ground-breaking and by now it could have dominated.

Too bad.

Warhammer is what UO could have been , many years ago.. Maybe the fun people (Paul Barnett , Josh Drescher ,ect) at Mythic will be able to breath life into UO...

I just don't believe it. EA makes crap, and I think you've just got that new car smell thing going right now. Wait until the smell fades and I think the truth will show.

Than you`ll be hard pressed to find a decent game.Like it or not EA has its mits into almost everything.Theres always monopoly.

I like both games.I`m not gonna quit UO to play WAR,Just gonna play both.Last night I played WAR all night. The PvP instances are alota fun and the best way (I`ve found) to XP fast.To me its not such a level grind that DAoC was.The PQ`s and stuff go a long way in taking the pain outa leveling.I mean ya get rewarded with XP for clicking on yourself 100 times(plus XP comes in ALOT of other forms),how bad can the level grind be?So many things give XP,the quests aren`t painful to do.I am not a quester.I usually hate questing, but WAR made them much more enjoyable to do.

WAR versus UO? Apples and Oranges. Both are great games. Both will get my money and time.

You know, no matter how many times I see this, I can't help but laugh at how rediculous this argument is. Levelling? What do you think you are doing with your skills? Levelling them. You can say it anyway you want but trainign a skill is still levelling, the difference with UO skill system being it's completely random when you actually get that next skill point versus something you can physically watch the progression of.

To me, level progression is one of those weak arguments I will never understand, since you are busy levelling in game anyways, just instead of one thing you are watching several.

What I meant is the somehow stale aftertaste it has.

WAR and (what I heard) WoW : You have reached LvL xx... (Arcade-Game anyone?)
UO: You train the skill you want activley
Eve: You train the skill you want over time passivley (even offline)
