I always have this prob, dont know why but I do too.

Also my cpu usage shoots way up on some of hte adds we get on these boards. Conan was the worst.

I've reported this many times to EA/Mythic. It's been going on for at least a year or two.

For me, it happens as soon as I log out. If I leave client.exe running without being logged in, it takes all available CPU. It doesn't appear to affect any other applications, but it pegs my CPU and causes my cooling systems to go into overdrive.

well with me its happening during gameplay. for some reason its eating up between 65 and 98% of my cpu the whole time its running.

mine uses 9% cpu when set to high priority
are you talking about the kingdom regurgitated client here?
2d does not use 100% of the cpu unless your cpu is way outdated

i usually have uo, uoassist, icq, ventrilo, teamspeak, four web pages,
and other non uo related things going at once with no problems

used to have this problem all the time on the old machine, windows xp ~~ I'm in no way a techie, but there is this:

new machine has vista, and this little box does not go away

so I go into task manager and end UO.exe

yes, this machine is better than the old one, but UO never goes over 10% usage now, where it used to (on the old machine) get pinned at 100%, so I'm wondering if that little box is stuck on other machines but some quirk in vista lets you see it

like I said, not a techie

I have a brand new machine with a Dual Core 3.2 GHZ and it still maxes out my CPU on a regular basis when I am logged out. I usually just close out of UO if I am using my machine for something else.

Righteous.

I know if I leave that log in screen for UO up for any amount of time my machine overheats in nothing flat.... Soon as i bring up UO I log in ASAP or I'll be overheated.... and yes my cpu goes way up to 100% it's crazy and it's done it for years.

Being a game, if it wants to chew up 100% of my Processor when I'm playing, I really don't care. Many games uses as much CPU as they can when you are playing them. My only issue is when it pegs my CPU when I'm NOT playing - when client.exe is running, but I'm not logged in.

Btw, on my Core2 Dual system, it only takes up to 50% of my overall CPU and on my Core2 Quad system, it only takes up to 25% of my overall CPU, so it doesn't cut across cores.

no its not an old computer. just recently reinstalled uo after taking a nice 6 month break. figured there was a setting or two i could tweak to fix it? apparently its just happening to remind me of why i left uo for better games in the first place haha.

So I have never noticed anything like this, but y'all got me intrigued so I tested it. - Core 2 Quad 2.6, 4 gigs DDR3.

Pulled up task while logged out but loggin screen was up using 25% steady no flux, logged in dropped down to 2% flux down to 0%, went to luna running went to 5% fluxin up to 8% down to 1% for most part stayed at 4-5% soon as I stopped running went down to 1% few fluxes down to 0%. Logged out went straight back to 25% and stayed.

Interesting ....

It's because the 2D client is oooold... It doesn't play well with other processes ;)

The whole "old CPU" thing quite funny, when you take into account the minimum spec of the 2D client.

Even with your CPU going to 100% usage you shouldn't have over heating issues unless you also have a cooling issue in the hardware itself. You might want to consider upgrading your fan (seeing you can get one from tigerdirect for about $10-$20).

No game cuts across cores unless it was specifically designed to do so. Many older games were not designed this way. However, you do run windows in a seperate core than you run the game so you do see a bonus in dual core technology on older games if its set up that way. At least that was the bonus with DAoC.

Wow!

Lol, I guess this was the first time I ever noticed this, but when I'm on log in screen I'm at 100% CPU usage as well. I'm at about 22% usage while in game and about 2% usage when not in game.

My system is newer, but I didn't build it to be top of the line because I never really get into top of the line games.

In comparison, when I have WoW's log in screen running system usage stays at 2%.

Uo has always been a CPU Hog...no idea why but it has...though I think it's funny I have EQ running at the moment, ICQ my Anti-Virus, Vent, and posting this and I have over 80% Idle.....

I'm absolutely fine (running about 20% usage) when I'm logged into the game. Its just the log in screen that hogs the usage.

It has always been like this, since the beginning. Basically, the client software is coded to use all available cpu when idle. However, if other applications need it, it will yield resources to those. So it is a low-priority task. Pretty much does not need fixing, if it were even possible (doubtful).

Open up task manager and look at the system idle process. Yes, it's sort of like that.

If you are using UO Assist, there are 2 commands that should help.
If I remember right, they are:
-releasemem
-reducecpu

Just type them ingame

Yep, this is ture, if your sitting at the log in screen in 2D it will use as much CPU as it can, because you know sitting there waiting for someone to enter their user/pass really requires some serious CPU POWER!!! ....and people reckon KR is buggy :p

As odd as this issue above is, its if the game is still using 100% of CPU when your logged in that is the major concern, as soon as you log in your CPU usage should drop from 100% to round 15-20% (this is based on a 1.8G CPU, depending on your CPU and if you have anything else running this will be different, but should be similar), if UO is using anymore than round 50% of your CPU then A something is wrong or B your CPU is quite old, which for playing 2D shouldnt be an issue.

If your on XP and using a single core processor the issue is most likely not UO or any other app but windows instead.

Windows XP will commit 100% of your processors power towards whatever is currently in need of it. The only time it does go down is if your machine is at an idle and no processes are fully active.

I run a dual core processor and when I am playing UO both cores sit at 50% usage constantly.

Vista very well may handle cpu usage the same way but I have not played with it much to see how it handles it.

This topic comes up from time to time. UO was originally built for a windows 95-98 architecture. So it is going to have some relics from that time. Now if built like most programs from that time UO is actively using 100% because it is being greedy and requesting as much system resources as it can get.

Now Windows 2000/XP/Vista rolls around and these versions are much better at resource sharing then 95/98. So programs do not need to be as greedy to get optimum results. Now current versions of windows are also smart enough to know that UO is greedy, unless it is told otherwise it will give UO what it wants when it can. But if more programs open it will take away from UO. However you may only see UO go from 100% to 98% to 100%. But that's just because newer programs are once again, not as greedy.

Will this cause huge system lag?

Most likely not if there are no major issues with your computer or OS. Most people are concerned only because they rarely see a program using 100% of the CPU these days. Just because UO is constantly reserving the CPU, does not mean its actually using it.

there in lies the problem. it IS causing lag. i take 3 steps and freze when it's happening. constant. it wasnt doing it at first now it is. making the game unplayable.
