New Crafter

Good day
I've recently started a crafter on Siege. Was very interested in working things up from scratch again, having to earn my way like back when I first started UO. Anyway, I've been working on mining, killing the occasional rat I stumble on to make gold to buy a pickaxe here and there until I'm able to craft shovels with more efficiency.

I do have some questions I hope some can offer help with. First, are crafters still useful on Siege? The roaming around I've done so far, I've noticed that nearly every vendor I come across has repair deeds, armor and weapons made by crafters. Is there still a market for a crafter?

Next, are there any guilds that work better for crafters then others? I know every guild needs a crafter or ten, but are there any that are more crafter-help orientated?

Third, and this may sound like a very uninformed question....but are pets, such as packies and beetles bondable? my first day here, not sure how it works on this shard.

And on those lines, may there be anyone willing or able to help me obtain a fire beetle? While I love doing everything from scratch, I do miss ole FireBreath melting down all my ore!

I can honestly say that so far, just having to actually work for gold and skills again from scratch has re-peaked my interest in UO, even with the little PK that occasionally takes place to us poor innocent crafters

Thanks for any help or info

First off you will need herding (inside joke).
Yes crafters are always needed, the guild you choose depends on your playstyle. Being biased I would sugest NEW or GIL or both in that order.
Yes packys bond on siege and can be trained up as well if you are so inclined.
If no one else steps forth I will go tame you a fire bug tomorow.

In addition to my previous questions, I have a new one. I was just killed twice in town by someone who used explosion. Is this a bug? exploit? Or just one of those things that twits do to make themselves feel like uber pvp'rs?
Just curious since there was no recourse for the twit who did it. and no reason for it either time.

Yes(!), there´s a market for a crafter here on Siege. As a matter of fact, as far as I´m concerned, Siege is the ONLY place where you feel useful as a crafter.

Welcome to Siege!

Some people will kill you for no reason. Thing is though, no matter how you die, don´t let it get to you.

And for the explosion thingy, not sure what that was but as you experienced here you can get killed in a town. So basically don´t wear anything you can´t afford to lose...

I was naked the first time with maybe a pickaxe on me, the second time was just rezzed so totally naked. Doesnt bother me being killed, rather used to it being a crafter from my previous shards, just cracks me up that certain people consider that PvP.
And thanks for the welcome and encouragement! I'm having a blast so far and havent done a thing but mine and die

Welcome.

When my hubby and I started here we too made a conscious decision that our Siege chars must stand on their own two feet, no x sharding gold from Europa through a broker. We've not regretted it.

I spent my first month on the shard pretty much living in Delucia inn. With bods for smith and tailor, sheep, woods, mountains and cows all to hand in the guardzone it was my very own mini-tram while I got some training.

I ventured out now and then of course, and died of course, but I did find a shop on the Vesper - graveyard road that stocks free sturdy shovels.

I've used this particular trick from time to time to kill someone (also used it to get black sandals way back when NPCs were killable).

How it works is, Explosion has a delay between the time to target someone, and the time it goes off. If you launch the explosion spell, but run the hell offscreen before the thing goes BOOM, anyone calling guards can't get to you since you're offscreen. Do this a few times to an AFK character, and you've got them dead (or once to a new character as you unfortunately experienced).

What you can also do is buddy up, Explo/FS someone (a combo which will kill most people on Siege who aren't equipped in a combat suit), and once you get guardwhacked have your friend res you immediately after so you can quickloot your corpse. This way you can loot the person you killed without losing your own stuff.

Now you know, you can defend against it.

A lot of people use GM leather armor regularly. I strongly recommend picking up Arms Lore as one of your skills, as it will make your armor first choice for people (Arms Lore adds extra resists to armor beyond what it gives on prod. shards). Siege is about the only place where a crafter is viable beyond a BOD bot!

Hi Archiv

Delucia Trade Association (DTA) is a crafter / trader guild. We farm, craft, trade. The only time we attack someone is to protect our goods or when we are raided.

We are neutral in all faction / alliance wars, we consider everyone a potential customer. We exchange goods and materials and provide storage and vendor spots to our members.

Lately we have become a somewhat sleepy guild, but we intend to kick things into gear again. Send me a PM / ICQ if you are interested.

Kind regards

ICQ me, I'll get you a beetle or two.

Thanks all so far! Someone was kind enough to get me a blue and fire beetle last night. And day two and still having a blast!

Thanks all for the pointers and info, though still not clear as to how to defend against the explosion/run away attack, but at least they dont get my insurance here!

Warriors are fun and all but will never truly understand the enjoyment one gets from shaving dead sheep!:coco:

Actually, you get 3 from a dead sheep and 1 from a live sheep. May weight more, never noticed that, but I'd still take the 3 to 1. Just wish it stacked with the non-dead sheared or looked different

wrong! shear them alive. The wool from dead sheep doesn't make as many balls of wool when spun

Tell me where you fam for your resources and I'll come by and give ya a hand. Also if you can, give me the specific times of the day with the locations. Nothing like having a buddy to farm with.

Yup...I always liked that little dev nod to humane resource gathering for wool. I know people get impatient and slaughter the sheep so they will respawn faster than the wool grows back after live shearing, so overall production may still favor slaughter, but I don't care, I have always practiced live shearing. :)

Also be sure you're able to recognise the wolf in sheep's clothing. Take a lesson from little red riding hood.

Well I'll be darned! I never noticed that. Always figured you got more because it's easier to shave from head to tail when they're not fighting back. Always learning!:scholar:
