Newbie: Shard preference?

Hey, semi-newbie here, I use to play way back when it was 'The Second Age' on Atlantic and I'm looking to start back up again. I'm downloading the game now and reading up on some new features but I'm wondering are some shards better than others now? Would like to join one that has a lot of players, just wondering what your all opinion was before embracing on a new adventure! Don't want to pick a lame one. Thanks. Any other advice would be helpful too.

Well to begin with you should look at the shards that give you the best connection speed. Its hard to enjoy game if you play a shard that your forever lagging on even if the people are great. Once you see what shards give you the best connection you can repost here or look at the shard forums themselves and see whats been happening and what the players/atmosphere are like.
Some shards are more Roleplaying communities while some are Pvp or PvM, so stating your play preference will help guide as to a shard you will enjoy the most.

Hi - just joined UO... U7 seems a loooong time ago!

Presumably I can swap shards on the day and my character just goes across exactly as when I logged out of a previous shard?

You can start any shard you want at any time. However, your characters will remain on the shard where initially created UNLESS you use a handy-dandy "Character Transfer" token. This item allows you to transfer a character and all items on his character/backpack/bankbox to a shard of your choice (minus Siege Perilous).

If you are East Coast, Atlantic is by far the busiest shard...but if you want a more laid back shard where people are more friendly and you can actually place a house, Legends is a dang fine shard.

remember you can always get your old acct back if you remember the log in info. There has not been a wipe in a long time. All my old accounts were still there and bank boxes in tact. Saves a lot of time from starting over. Just a thought!

I'm glad i asked, then! So, if I move shards, I get to create a new character on each new shard I log into?

That is correct. The only way for a character to get from (say) Lake Austin to Pacific is to purchase a transfer token, load up the vauables you can carry and invoke the transfer process. Anything you cannot take in a packhorse, on you or in your bankbox is welp ... history.

I think it's all sorts of fun to start new characters - even in templates already doen on another shard. Just to remind yourself that an Ettin or Ogre CAN kill you. <shrug>

If you want some fun seeing how andvanced templates can handle things, try Test Center. Read the journal for all the help commands. You can set stats, skills, etc and try out things there that might take somewhat longer on prodo shards.
