Which new game most closely resembles UO in its prime?

I'm still trying to find an MMORPG that I can enjoy anywhere near as much as I did with UO back in 1998-2000. I have tried Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Guild Wars, Hellgate London, Vanguard, and Age of Conan among other games. Are there any new games I have missed that have a similar feel to UO... a sandbox style game with a real player-driven community and thriving economy?

Asheron's Call is almost as old as Ultima Online. I've played it off and on, mostly off as UO took most of my years and now it is LotRO that has me in it's grasp. I doubt there is any game that can truly compare to what Ultima Online has offered, unless comaring graphics. I love Ultima Online and even though I do not play anymore, I will always speak kind of it for UO has given me 10 years of wonderful gaming. I am an evolving person and I enjoy technology and the 3D graphic era (EA/Mythic, please resurrect UX:O), so my time had finally come and I moved on.. a hard road to leave made easier by forgetting to reactivate before my homes collapsed.. Back on note, whenever I did return to AC, I find it pretty fun. I do get bored very easily however, which explains the off and on.

I wouldn't suggest it though if I didn't like the game.

*Orvago winks*

The best game out there now, in my opinion, is Lord of the Rings Online. Of course I am a huge LotR/Tolkien fan and playing in LotRO gives me the feel that I am actually in Middle-Earth taking part in the ongoing story.

The graphics are abosolutely beautiful, they are not like WoW's, more like AoC's if I had to compaire. Where WoW's are more "cartoony" (not in a bad way, I like WoW's graphics too), LotRO's are much more realistic and very pleasing on the eyes. Gameplay is smooth, combat is fun and exciting and the quests are awesome and lore-filled.

Turbine aquired the rights to many of the LotR books and they stick to that lore religiously, which.. as a fan, I love.

LotRO has housing however, it is instanced in "Communities," which there are 4 Communities. One for the Elves, one for the Hobbits, one for the Dwarves, and one for the Race of Man. Each instance is further split in more instances within that housing Region to allow any player the chance to gain a house. There are also Kinship (Guild) Houses available.

The Player Community in LotRO is one of the friendliest and best I have seen and began it's existance long before LotRO was released, back when it was going to be called Middle-Earth Online (MEO forums). Because of the nature of LotRO, being strictly based upon Lore from the Books (not movies), the Community is generally very mature and filled with adults of all ages. The younger crowds are generally more mature also than you find in other games, whether this has to do with their parents also being Tolkien fans or not, I am not sure but I find it very refreshing.

If this interests you, give their 14 day trial a go.

*Orvago give a big thumbs up*

If you're looking for a "space" game, try EVE online. This is the single best, in my opinion, space-based game in history. They only have one server, world-wide, so you are never alone. The only reasons I stopped playing EVE was because of finances and time.

I tried LOTRO during the open beta and was impressed with how polished the game was at that stage, but it just didn't suck me in and I got bored with it quickly. The game felt way too linear and I'm looking for a more wide open experience.

I have heard nothing but good things about EVE, but I'm concerned with the time issue. In a typical week, I probably only get about 4-5 hours of dedicated PC gaming time, so I don't know if that would be enough to enjoy a game that sounds like it requires a large time commitment.

Actually, if play time is an issue, EVE is right on spot. You do not "train" skills in the common game sense in EVE. Skills take Real World time to go up in rank. You can raise a skill even while offline!

For instance, say you plan on playing for only 2 hours. You would want to log in and train your desired template's skills that would only take 2 hours to train. Then before you log off, you start training in a skill that will take the expected amount of time to train while you plan on being offline. So if you do not think you'll be playing for 24 hours after you log, train a skill that takes a day or more. If you plan on being gone longer, train a really long skill!

I found myself setting my alarm clock to wake up or remind me to get the next skills training when they complete during the times when my play time was severely limited.

Some skills however, takes weeks or longer to raise when depending on their Rank and how many prerequisites it takes to get to be able to train that skill.

Here's a page of my character's latest skills, most all of which I raised while offline: http://ighre.zebular.com/seteshre.html - Almost all of these skills were trained while I was NOT online.

*Orvago winks*

It is this way of training skill that attracted me to EVE and has kept me as a fan even though fiances do not permit me to play it at the moment. It is also a very easy game to
(once you get settled in and learn the game a bit, which doesn't take too long at all if you do the starting tutorial that pops up when you first create a character and log in) just log in and either find an NPC or Player to fight or travel to an asteroid field to get to mining.

Dag nabbit! Now you have me craving to play some more EVE again!

*Orvago chuckles madly*

LotRO has improved so much. I never thought the game could get better but Turbine has proven me wrong time and time again and continues to provide Free Content Updates. I played since Beta also and if I were to compare Beta and Now (not graphics, those have stayed relatively the same. Content, Quests, Classes, Races, Items, etc. is what I am speaking of have changed so much for the better), they would be almost 2 completely different games. Give the 14 day trial again, worst that could happen is that you find it is not for you... or you find yourself madly addicted like me, whichever would be worse.

I agree with you. Considering how complex the underlying story is and how difficult it is to transport this into a MMORG, they did a fantastic job. I read most of the books form Tolkien (several times) and I also love the films by Peter Jackson. You can really jump into this Middle Earth universe and due to the awesome 3D view you really feel as part of it. I started as a pre-subsciber and was completely amazed.

The reason I neglected it was similar to Sargon's. The level-based gameplay turned out to be not my cup of tea. I used to play on a roleplaying shard and was increasingly annoyed about the speech of some "1337roxxors" in the looking-for-group channel and their behavior in the game. But as you say much has changed I think I will give it another try.

Has anybody played Richard Garriott's game "Tabula Rasa"?

I was in the Tabula Rasa beta for a long time. Despite all the criticism TR has gotten, I actually liked it and think it's a lot of fun. It was exceptionally easy to learn, but had to sophistication of storyline and quests to keep it interesting. The quests were challenging, but very doable... which keeps things fun without being overly frustrating.

I loved LOTRO, liked WoW, and sorry to say... EVE bored my right out of my skull (honestly though, I probably didn't give EVE enough of a tryout). The most fun I've had in any MMO recently is in... Dungeon Runners (funniest MMO known to man).

All that said, I haven't seen any MMO that is "like" UO... UO is in a class all by itself.

Darkfall; if it ever comes out that is.
Yea DF is or was being designed to resemble UO: If they ever get it out.

LOTRO is where its at now I would say. WoW is a great game, played it for 2,5 years but you must be a hardcore gamer to really get anywhere, as you have to raid. LOTRO you can play casual, crafting is very good, much better then WoW, the classes are really fun to play. They have housing, it is a far cry from UO though. UO has the best housing of any game that is no doubt but housing is a moot point in a 10 year old game with issues every day.

My word about WoW -- the game is built around GRIND, not fun. The game is very addictive, but eventually you realize that the game isn't oriented around gameplay but rather accomplishments. It's very linear in that way. If you're really into UO's style, you probably won't be into WoW at all.

I've played WoW myself for a few months and I like it until I get sick of the grind. It may be worth a try but honestly I would recommend against it. The endgame is the whole point of WoW pretty much and it can take 5-15 days of PLAYED time to get to endgame. And then there's a whole 'nother grind for getting items so you can take on harder dungeons, wherein you get new items to take on even harder dungeons. *barf*

You wont.

As old as UO is, it is still unmatched on a lot of aspects.

You dont see new players because EA cant afford marketing, and the kiddies these days are all about what *looks* the coolest on the outside.

UO's experience has yet to be, and most likely wont ever be matched.

Ever.

Im sorry but I have to laugh at LoTR. LoTR is exactly the same(aside from the lore) as EQ, EQ2, D&D online and Vanguard. All of them use the same exact gaming engine have the same graphics and interface. Asherons Call is different than the others. I would say AC is more primative than UO. I havent found any game that is even close to UO.
