Not quite correct. You can counter the Protection penalty with FC items. Let me quote:

The penalties of Protection are "decreased physical resistance; a reduction of their Resisting Spells skill value by -35, and a slower casting speed modifier of 2 points (technically, a negative Faster Casting Speed)."

I'm not sure if we are both saying the same thing in different ways.

If you have 2/6 casting and you cast the protection spell, you will now be at 0/6 casting.

If you have 4/6 casting and you cast the protection spell, you will now be at 0/6 casting.

This is for sure a fact. Is that what you are saying as well?

I thought protection reduced your FC cap by 2 and your fc by 2.

so 2/6 becomes 0/6 and 4/6 becomes 0/6 for magery and 1/6 for necro and 2/6 for everything else.

To my understanding with Protection
4/6 casting becomes 2/6 casting.
This means, faster casting is reduced by 2.

i use protection, reactive armor on my necro mage.
now before protection he has 7 3, afterwards i barely even notice a change in my casting speed,

Sadly it is not. You could have 6/6 casting and then cast the protection spell and you will end up at 0/6

It was abit sarcastic. .
I was just pointing out how much information there is regarding this subject alone.
As a casual player with limited time for "research" on how to play, I rely on these posts for up to date info. I am in awe of the player support of this game. I mean the PLAYER support of each other not EA.
I really would like to PvP sometime in the future. I just dont want to waste time on a char that becomes unbalanced for it by changes. I have too many Real Life things to do. If they would just print a new play guide I wouldnt need to research more than playing the game. The one I have is a little dated . It came with the original game
