I know many of us have been fooled, tricked and scammed in this game some of you might be too ashamed to admit it or mention some. many of these scams that we fell for we can laugh about now, some may have been too devastating for some even now. a few reasons i am making this post one it can be humorous another if players are aware of these scams they might be able to avoid them plus i am just curious about the scams that other players have fallen for maybe you are too. i will list all the scams i fell for during my nearly 8 years in UO please feel free to post a list for ones that happened to you if any thanks.
  1. As a new player just out of my young status with good Armour before insurance some guy partied me and asked me to open a crate i did and it was factionally poisoned and the guy looted my body boy did i feel dumb lol.
  2. As a new player and just starting to collect rares some guy said hey i have a rare item for you he said i will sell it to you real cheap only 10k it was a rune book dyed red it was titled blood stained rune book this was before i knew rune books could be dyed or titled. at that time 10k was a lot to me.
  3. Just after we could use recall runes and go to fel i saw a rune on the ground saying leaveing UO uber rares for 1k each so i recalled and found my self by a house in between boxes and couldn't move i was murdered instantly by like 10 players and a ww the only thing i lost was some insurance and my pride. other players where there too dead and mad so at least i wasn't the only one lol.
  4. Just after insurance came out i had like 1200 luck and 100 LRC on me and some guy noticed that i didn't have the gold to insure it at the time well he kept trying to guild me and i reluctantly gave in because he offered me a plus 20 magery PS if i joined he even showed it to me. as soon as he guilded me first he killed me and looted me boy did i feel dumb lol.
  5. Not really a scam but i have a public house with vendors with bod books and bods not for sale when i was fixing my bods upstairs in my house and i put a bod book down for a second with barbed leather bods next thing i know the book vanished and then some guy is at my house sign and takes off he must have been in stealth boy i feel dumb admitting that now only i have access to my upstairs floors lesson learned.

well that is all the times i have had been fooled or scammed or tricked in UO through my nearly 8 years at least the ones i know for sure. embarrison yes funny some of it lessons learned definatly. try not to be too harsh with the comments here it took guts to list some of those i hope you will list some too and like this post thanks for reading.

Back in 1998, I fell for a quite popular trick: Some players placed trapped chests in the wilderness and hid. Then they waited for a clueless adventurer to pass by (like myself, in this case) and open the box out of curiosity. The blast of the explosion instantly killed you. Then they came out of the hiding, looting their victims dry. They weren't even flagged criminal and did not receive a murder count. Those "blue murderers" were counted amongst the worst scum of Britannia back then.

This happened long before the reputation system was overhauled, longer before the usage of trapped boxes was changed, and much longer before the Trammel facet prevented the looting of other players.

People who are complaining about UO today, wishing back the UO of the past, tend to forget how many scams, cheats, exploits especially on the cost of unexperienced players happened during the Early Days. Having that knowledge, I must say that the game has improved massively until today.

Only once have i been scammed and after i tracked the guy down and congratulated him.
by todays standards it wasnt that good but i thought it was at the time.
i was at wbb gating to my house which was then a shop. a guy then came up to me and asked me if i had a coccoon for sale. i didnt but i did have one in the house. anyway i said no and he said he was disappointed and would pay 1m to anyone for one. greed then took over and i told him to wait where he was. I bet yer ahead of me now? off i went to the shop and inside to the coccoon, i unlocked it and bang it was gone!

I've never allowed anyone to scam me...

When green thorns were new, me and a friend figured out you'd get green vines from the monster that spawned if you targetted a swamp tile. He traded one for an ethy horse, and I traded one for 1m to rare dealers...

Unfortunately, someone figured out how to get vines the next day, and posted about it on the forum here...

Them rares dealers were very rich, and I was very poor, so I never felt guilty about that, heh...

I purchased UO and began playing on the exact day Age of Shadows was released. When I got the box it came with the 'Account Upgrade Code'. These were selling for 1,000,000 gold at the time and I decided to sell mine since I only needed the 'New Account Code'.

I was approached by a player on Great Lakes whose name is similar to a four-letter "punk" brand of jeans (can't say due to forum rules) and was offered 1,000,000gp for the code at the Britain Bank. I was then asked to run to the Felucca Minoc moongate and follow this player to his house.

Dumbly, I agreed. When we got to his house he asked me for the code. I hesitated but complied. After I handed him the code he said "brb" and vanished for a second. When he logged back in he was on his red. He began casting spells and before I knew it I was dead.

And just like that I got tricked out of an AoS Account Upgrade Code.. True story. I won't say I was "scammed"-- although technically I was-- since the situation really occurred due to my own lack of game knowledge.

What a first day of playing UO that was..

I can't say as I've ever really fallen for scams per se, at least not that I can remember, but I certainly have made some horrible deals in my time, and thrown away some things that I wish I hadn't. Here's a short list of some of the highlights.

1. When I came back after being away for 5 years, I decided to change shards, so I thought, maybe some of the old stuff I had on me was rare, and I could xshard trade it for a house on my new shard (went from Chessy to Cats). So I found a nice person that would trade a house on Cats for all my old crap on Chessy. Well now that I've played for a couple of years since then, I figure I probably traded 50 mil worth of stuff, for a 5 mil house...

2. I once bought a bag of ten crystal items for 2 mil. This was before I realized they were going to be as common as dirt.

3. I had a black forest ostard on my tamer on Chessy. Well when I came back, I discovered that all my old pets now had 0 phys resist, including my old forsest ostard. So I thought, I'll let it go and get a new one that isn't "broken". (And you have to ask yourself, who cares if a forest ostard has 0 phys resist? Sometimes I'm not so bright.) I discovered not too long after that that black forest ostards don't spawn anymore, and what I had had in my possesion was very likely one of the rarest pets in the game...

This first day I started playing UO I purchased a horse, which I figured I would need in my adventures, but alas! It was not well fed and went wild shortly after.
The seller tamed it again and refused to tell me how to feed mounts.

Needless to say I was very upset.

This wasn't really so much of a scam as it was a betrayal, but it all ended up working out in the end.

Way back in the day before houses had "owners," a friend of mine asked me if I would help him train stealing. He had some items that he wanted me to put into my backpack so he could practice stealing them off me. One of the things he "stole" was my housekey, which in and of itself was no big deal, he was a trusted friend, I would have let him use the house anytime he wanted. But he copied it before returning it.

Fast forward to house claiming, he knew that I wasn't the original placer of the house, and anyone with a key could theoretically make a claim to the house. We went back & forth during the ownership decision process, placing vendors, etc. Until finally, on the very last day, I placed a guildstone, and won my house.

I've upgraded since then, but I'm very proud to say I still have a house on that spot.

Two guys tried to pull a similar trick on me back in 2001.

One of them wanted to buy my zombie statue in my house..
I was sensing something...back then a zombie statue was quite expensive.

too bad 'detect hidden' revealed the other guy hidden next to the statue...
I insta banned his @ss from my house.

It was a nice try...but not nice enough to fool me.

A month ago a neighbour of mine called 'venom essence' was sneaking into my house while i was deco-ing. (simple stuff tho..like tables and chairs..he was probably hoping i would pop some rares out of my backpack while my house was public...na-ah)

Too bad..doors aren't stealthers their best friend.
I saw my front door opening and i knew there was company.

Glad to say, none. I was told by the friends that brought me to UO before I started playing the game to trust no one I didn't know. I've always followed that advice and have thankfully never fallen prey to any scams.

Lets

Shadow item in trade window.
Ethy horse that was a horse horse.
Black dye tub which was regular tub with black yarn over it.

People tried to..
Hey can you hold this for me and give it to my other characture. In it was really expensive taming casting jewelry. Pluse 86 single gold coins. The jewelry was to make me trust them. The coins were to secretly over load me so they could ask me to show them my magi hat I had on when it was worth 50 million.
The hat would have fallen.

Funny thing is I called the guy on it. And he then got mad I would give him his taming jewelry back.

Or
Psst bud I learned to dupe. I need you ethy. Its one that is facing the right way. Ill dupe it and keep the dupe and show you have to do it.

Or
HTML text on rune books and runes.

Or
changing items in window

Or
trying to buy things for default price of item placed on vendor before there was a delay

thats about it.

OH THE BIGGEST dupe. (as i stated before) Is duping myself into believing EA can figure out how to stop cheating and that a clean game is on the horizon. I actually continually dupe myself into believing that.

I don't know if I've ever really been scammed per-se, about the closest I can come is when I first started playing and I decided to make my first trip into fel. I was out on the road leaving brit and heading for yew. (This was back before I learned about recall runes) I had made it about halfway to Yew when someone who decided they would like to own my all black outfit. (Dyed with a 'true black' dyetub, back when they were in high demand) Foolish me, I didn't have any armor on, nor was I armed at the time. I decided to try to run my way back to brit. I'd have to say I was rez-killed about 5 or 6 times before I realized 'Stop going to wandering healers, and run back into town to get rezed'. So back in brit I got rezed, and headed for the moongate to get back to tram, when at the bank I run into my killer, who now is holding my clothes hostage. He wanted me to pay him some huge sum of money to get them back. Needless to say I didn't pay, I let him keep them and headed back to tram. Since that day I've amassed a pretty decent sized collection of 'newbiefied' clothes for my chars to wear when they're out of their armor.

I found that one hilarious.

My personal favorite was the blank scroll scam...back when house deeds looked identical to blank scrolls.

Hail: I have been scammed by the game itself. First, back in 99, i made a bow, and it used over 15k logs to make it. GM would not give them back.

Was Dark Lord back around the same time, and learned that you could become, "TO" Dark, and get guardwacked, even though your title did not change. GM told me to recall into a bank, do not move, say bank, to get my stuff. I did that twice, and got guardwacked twice.

Some of the original scams in the game were caused by Lazy Players. Buying armor/weapons without using id or arms lore on them, and they would break after just a few uses.

or, players would sell regs on their vendor. Black pearl for 5G each, instead of the 6 that the npcs charged. They would be in stacks of only 10 each on the player vendor. Players would get in a hurry to buy them, not knowing that one set of black pearl was not 50 gold, but was 5000 gold, or even 50,000 gold.

I also had fallen for the PK traps, where you used a teleporter, and on the other side it was blocked off by boxes, a PK would be inside and steal your Regs to stop you from recalling out, and e bolts away you were dead.

Or, the ol mark a rune to a PK trap area, but lable it to someplace else, like New shopping mall.

If you call mis-marked runes to dangerous places a scam, I suppose I've fallen for that one. Luckily never into a PK trap, usually just recall into the bowels of a very dangerous fel dungeon or onto an island full of snakes and no healers.

Thats not getting scammed :p thats just getting PKed hehe

Worst scam (not that its that bad) that has happened to me was in bout 2001ish when some guy got me to release a vet reward statue in my house (to sell to him), god-knows why I let him in my house while I did it, but of course as soon as i released it he picked it up and thanks to Trammel I could not do a thing about it, he laughed at me and recalled off... needless to say I moved my house back to Fel quite soon after.

Another one that just popped into my head. When I scamed myself out of a house. Back when I was a newbie, I purchased my first house (a small marble for the huge sum of 200k). The owner gated me to the house somewhere in the trinsic swamps, transfered the house to me, took his gold and recalled back to town. I looked around my new digs, and decided to move some stuff out of the bank and into the house. So I recalled to the bank... without marking a rune, or making any effort to record the location of my house. Next thing I know I'm at the bank, pack filled with stuff to move, and no idea where I live. Good-bye gold and house!

I had a large pink tombstone (the really big scrolly one) stolen off me by a guildmate while at an auction. I should have put it right in the bank or house after I bought it. *sigh* That was only a few months ago.

Hmm, the only time I was big time duped... Was at WBB, char was maybe a week old. Someone sent me a guild invite, my curiosity got the better of me and I checked accept. Then bam, Im dead so fast I wasnt even sure what happened.:blushing: Got rezzed and of course my stuff wasnt insured, guy took it all. I was a very naked newbie for a while after that.;)

Oh the Neon wierd colored robes I think everyone bought one LOL

I only got scammed/tricked once and it still breaks my heart to this day. It was my first year anniversary and I was so excited to get my year reward, but I wanted money instead so I went to brit bank and spammed "selling 1st Yr reward your Pick for $$$$"

It only took about 2 mins for a mean heartless dood to spot me, he came up to me and said that he would like to buy my reward, and that he wanted the lizardman Statue. I was so excited I hurried and picked the reward and put it up for trade.....As he walked away laughing....

I still have that statue, its a daily reminder of how cruel and mean some people can be in the game.
