lockpicking w/my friend the Satyr, whats wrong?

Hi all,
So I hit 95 lockpicking and saw the "Twisted Weald and Satyr" method to get the last five. I'm doing it perfectly but getting hardly no gains at all over a few hours when the advice to do this said I'd get the whole 5.0 in a few hours.

The technique:
Go to Twisted Weald and bring a Satyr over near the entrance/exit teleporter. Attack the Satyr and wait until you under the effect of its Discordance. When your skills drop jump into the sparkle teleporter and start picking boxes. When your skills return to normal repeat the process. You should reach Grandmaster in a couple hours.

I'm using the same type red wooden container made by my gm carpenter.
I'm definitely discording, I sparkle, can see my lp skill at about 60

I'm only getting a 0.1 gain every couple of hours, NOT as advertised!

Any ideas? Should I give up and go to chests? Thanks for any advice!

Is your GM carpenter also a GM Tinker? It's the tinker skill that determines the difficulty of the locked box.

Those instructions fail to tell you to come back inside the Weald while still under the effects of the Discord and to stay near the Satyr so you stay under the effects.

Yeah, Connors right. You have to stay discorded ... you only go through the sparkles to lose the aggro. You then need to go back in weald whilst still discorded and stay close to the Satyr that discorded you to keep discord. You only need 1 box and one made at 70 tinkering skill works best ... you get too many broken picks with GM made boxes whilst discorded.

yes, gm carp and gm tinker.

the instruction lack detail, but I am doing it correctly (going out and back in) and I set 'follow' on satyr and lockpick away.

couldn't be the follow command could it? I'll try it manually but I doubt it.

I know its working as I am sparkling and I can see my 95 stat discorded down near 60. I also tried a different red wooden box, made my my gm tink/carp, same thing.

I see my picking failures and the occasional broken pick, just no gains :(

BTW, I'm very impressed w/how quickly you get some great answers here. Thanks again.

If I remember right, you can only gain from player made chests to about 95 (or is it 99?). After that, you can only gain from lockpicking in a dungeon environment (or npc chests in town).

I GM'd lockpicking from a GM crafted box in the same manner he's trying to, and this was only a few months ago, so is still recent enough to be accurate.

You'll actually gain better on a 75 tinker box after the initial disco, for about half the gain to 100 real. This is especially true if you get a paragon Satyr to disco you (as they drop you about another 6-9% more than a normal one)

ALT-leftclick on the satyr, you'll see the words "Now Following" appear in grey above your head. Your character will automatically follow the satyr.

Sounds like the box you're using is too tough. Do you succeed in picking the lock at all? It's been a while for me, but I'm pretty sure at that level you need to succeed to gain. You may need one crafted by a tinker of lower skill (70-ish).

They basically fixed that type of stuff, so you only gain at a speed based off your real, not show.

Unless they've changed it in the past few months you can gain from failures also.

Come to think of it when I trained my THIRD character with LP, I used the satyrs, and gains were slow as heck until I switched from the GM tinker box to the 75 box. Gains went even faster when I had to leave, and had a paragon disco me the next time.

You break a lot less picks that way too.

That could be it. The box may be too difficult. I GM'd using a master tinkered box that i had 100% chance of opening. I actually had about 10 boxes and just picked them all and then locked em all. I spent most of my time trying to get disco'd without getting killed and trying to keep the satyr interested enough to stay with me. Other than that, it was pretty easy.

Also, set your box on the ground and make a macro with last object (the lockpicks) then last target (the box on the ground) and spam that, you'll lose alot of lp's but gain quickly

OK, LOL so I discorded my tinker with Mr. Satyr and after putting my clothes back on I made so boxes with my discorded 72 tinker skill.

People mentioned 75 skill, will 72 work just as well? If not, how do I find a 75 box on cats? Also could use a alacrity lockpick scroll on cats if anyone is selling one.

Thanks all.

UPDATE: With a 72 box and discorded LP skill of 69, I'm succeeding every time and getting no gains :-( after quite a few minutes, still trying

ANOTHER UPDATE: About two hours with above, NO gains! So I tried an 87 box and it isn't gaining either. Any help is greatly appreciated.

make sure you have free skillpoints or something set to drop.

Even the most experienced people sometimes forget...

In case you've ever debated whether to go the old slow-and-steady route to GMing lockpicking by actually picking some chests every day, I'd like to note that I just got a pretty nice ring out of level 4 chest: strength 4, enhance potions 10%, FCR 3, FC 1, and LRC 14%. Kind of made up for running around and picking chests like a fiend today and not even getting a "guaranteed gain" yet today (still stuck at 97).

Occasionally you do get some half-decent stuff out of level 4 chests and can make a fair amount of gold for a few minutes worth of work. It's just too bad that the gains are so darn slow.

You know, one of the reasons on Lake Austin that I moved the THB house to the Compassion crossroads, is that there is constantly brigand and gypsy camp spawns there (and the occasional rare evil mage camp), and that means that one doesn't have to wander far from the new Guildhouse/training site to find chests one can gain skill on, randomly spawning.

one thing, you need to gain a skill point, before the box(s) reset, and you can gain again on the next cycle through on the same boxes. it's why i did the satyr with 40 boxes. plus, it cut down the time on locking the boxes back up. Some people say they got through on 1 box, but that never worked for me. 40 worked a treat.

Feath - that code was removed from the system about 2-3 years ago - it was the same code that was involved with 8x8 training, which also ceased to work at the same time.

I do agree that multiple boxes work better, simply because you can set up one long macro, and gains can "clump" due to the game's badly-designed random number generator's tendency to produce streaks (i.e. situations where gains are few and far between, then you get 2 in concecutive tries). You are more likely to get 2 gains from picking twice (and locking back at the end) than by sticking a locking action between each individual picking attempt, as they are more likely to use the same RNG seed.

I've been playing this for like ten years and I can't just ignore this post after all the great help, as much as I'd like to crawl in a corner. It WAS my skills cap, some items were making it look like I had decliners when in fact I did not!!! Duh! Sorry! LOL! My Bad!

With all this great advice I assume I'll have this right up in no time.

Thanks all!

Don't feel bad, we've all done it from time to time. Just last week while training carpentry I burned through about 5k boards before I realized that my carpentry was still locked from when I was setting my stats. Boy did I feel like an idiot. I'm sure if our avatars could blush, there would have been a red elf standing at the luna bank that day.

For anyone that finds the above mentioned method absolutely boring in prospect and/or those that play on Siege, where Twisted Weald is routinely checked by reds (often with faction monster ignore enabled) for easy PK pickings, I'd suggest Trinsic Barrier island, especially if you have a non-combat character. The brigand and gypsy camps spawn very quickly there with locked chests, crates, and barrels ready for the picking. By the time you make the round of the small island, they generally have started to respawn and there is no wait. Picking up a couple hundred gold, gems, and such with each attempt is at least something, and the wands, greater heal especially, can be handy. If you don't want to worry about trap damage, wear a 70's fire resist suit, and carry greater cure potions for the poison traps. Even crafters can easily work this area, as if nothing else, you can lead the brigands to the GZ and get them whacked. If you have enough magery, you can also cast blade spirits (attacks everything, including non-hostile animals), earth elemental (my preference since it doesn't slaughter the animals) or use a mage weapon (I prefer a bow to keep distance) and do a bit of "exciting" brigand bashing.

There are also a ton of deer & cows on the island, as well as lots of sheep, and reagents that spawn on the ground to pick up. While I am not a fan of harvesting leather from non-hostile creatures, and also only "live shear" sheep in the game, if you are so inclined, you can slaughter away for a nice haul of leather while you practice your lockpicking, and of course there is the wool. You can station a pack animal on the bridge out of reach of the brigands, and after your make your round of the island, you can load up the leather & gold, and drop off at the bank in town when your pack animal gets full.

I used this method to get from 95 to 100 lockpicking, and in the end I also had a few tens of thousand gold to show for it, and a nice stash of regular gems which you can't reasonably purchase on Siege and are useful in crafting. I also swiped the open barrels to use for deco.

:)
