The Castle is sold ....

The castle is sold and so have all the pocessions and gold. The account has beed cancelled. This was my last UO account to go. At one time I was paying for 22 accounts a month.

The player run town I built is gone. The parties I used to throw are just memories that will last forever.

To the friends made along this journey I say farewell. Flint, Tess, Scarlet, and Gor and so many others from the beginning. To Airmid, Dreamlore, and others from the more recent, thank you. Friends do play a major role in the enjoyment of UO.

I tried hard to be a positive impact on the game and the community. But when I realized I was trying to instill my morals and beliefs on others I decided it was time to leave. I, also could no longer support the cheating that goes on in the game. I could no longer support a company that I felt ignored the customers. I tried to bring attention to matters I felt strongly about.

Ultima Online is probably the greatest game of it's kind. I still feel this way. I feel the company that runs it is the problem. I can no longer support that company with my fee each month.

But on happier notes, I wish all you players the very best. I hope that UO finds a way to expand and flourish for all of you.

I would like to share some memories that I will always have of UO:

The days of being in Brit and someone came running in and shouted PK's had attacked them. The group that massed for revenge, even I who could not fight went with the group--me dieing would mean someone would be occupied and maybe another would kill them.

The day someone attacked me while in my first home and the rescue swarm that came due to my call for help. Talk about a ganking.

The opening of the GSS Keep Vendor Mall on LS. 1500 plus came to the event. We worked for weeks getting ready for it. We built a 2 story just to hold the items we were giving away--no lockdowns then. We had 4 lumberjacks and 5 miners out collecting resources for a month. Addons were coming out and we made them for EVERYONE for free. We handed out thousands upon thousands of addons and furniture. We had a staff of 15 just going into the crowd and giving stuff away non-stop for 3 hours. The fight in the corral between Lord.Blackthorn and Lord.British (notice the .) British was winning until Blackthorn pulled a knife. Never was a gathering this large ever seen or was it ever duplicated on LS.

The opening of my own Tower for Vendors and the Halloween party we threw. Had to hire a guild to patrol the area so no PK's would even come close to interrupting. While others patrolled and dismissed thieves on the spot. We had 4-500 show up for this event. Gave away over 10 million in gold and items. This was before Trammel, you do the math.

The opening of my Castle vendor mall in trammel. We crashed the server that day.

The Valentines Day invasion on LS where hundreds of players got together and made sure people got a Valentines gift because OSI decided no gifts that year. Remember seeing the cupids?

The chicken fights where the chickens would not die.

The best cross dressed man in Britain contest.

The net tosses that killed so many.

The hundreds of events that my friends put on for the benefit of others. I would get an idea and put some cash up but others did the work usually not even being noticed for it.

Those people I especially want to thank. Over the years there have been so many. But some of the names, Watcher, Aboo, Devil Woman,and so so many more, Thank You for what you made UO mean to me.

I may come and scour these boards once in a while--I may even post now and then. UO will always mean something to me. I started playing to research a little on a book I wrote. Someday it may be published and people will recognize a little UO life in the book. But after the first month UO had me hooked. I should say the friends I made had me hooked.

To all the people I have met, had an effect on, or who had an effect on me--Farewell and Safe Journeys, have a GREAT DAY! To all of you that don't know me--I wish you all the best.

I dont know this guy other than his posts but from all he has done and paid for in the game charging him with lack of commitment seems a little crazy. Me I still enjoy the game and community and will play till the end mine or the games whatever comes first. But I understand some of the vets disillusionment. I think the ultima team cares for and wants to make the game better . However for Ea corporate this is one of their smallest fish,so who knows what level of resources they are giving the devs to work with.

Have you seen what EA did for Hemisphere on Europa.. Museum, statues, you name it. The whole merchant organization with the hot-shots of rip-off *Errrr* I mean hot-shots of trading, on Europa has items made specifically for them by EA and all that mumbo-jumbo.... And they are commited to no game, just hoarding, bragging, selling and RL cash.

And they cannot give this guy some credit? If you only understand numbers even then you could show some respect- 10 million BEFORE TRAMMEL!?..

Most important how can they let go of people willing to promote the game by not removing dupes and cheaters? Every time I may buy gold or an item I keep in mind how it could be duped but I am not pretentious. Remove it ALL and I won't buy, and won't quit either. I'll hunt for it. Since they don't remove it the pretension is on EA's side and I'll take advantage of it for my 13E / Month after all those years and all those expensive items.

This guy boldly decided to not take advantage of the game's weak state and instead stop funding a worthless company. Bravo. Wish that my RL friends and my girl hadn't started UO again.. I'd be long gone too.

Dennar I only met you a couple of times in game. Once was in Yew. I was a newb and you saw me killing skeletons in the graveyard. I was an archer. You stopped made me 5 bows and gave me 1000 arrows. I even won 10 million at one of your events.

I havent played UO from the beginning and some of the events you mention I never heard of, but I was at some of yours and they were awesome.

Unfortunately there is cheating where ever you go..... even in RL.... you can not escape it..... I do not like to support it either.... though it's not going to make me quit... Yes they are trying to make it harder for cheaters.... they are doing all they can to put an end to scripting, cheating and duping... You think it's mere coincidence that the character transfer system is down???? You think they aren't checking item ID's on turn ins??? I think they are...

They have changed many things to try to thwart cheaters... but just like hackers in RL who target your pc with hundreds of Trojans, virus's, key loggers and everything else they are doing the same to the game we love....

Why?!? Sick twisted minds? Perhaps they lack morals which seems to be a growing trend in the real world. Perhaps they do it because they can.... who knows..... I know that some do it because it makes RL money.... Who wouldn't want a job you can do at home without hardly having to lift a finger? Or while playing a GAME....

Fact of the matter is I doubt it will ever be possible to play in a MMO without cheats, scammers, dupers and hackers. What can we do as honest players? We can refuse to buy items ingame from unknown sources, we can report any dupes, scams or cheats that we find. And we can raise the flag when we see outrageous things going on..... We can get on test center and thoroughly test the new publishes BEFORE they hit production shards. And we can offer our ideas to the team for ways to combat these things... OR we can sit back do nothing and continue to play and pretend that none of these things effect us at all.

Or we can quit.

I myself, I'll be here till they close the shards... I'm sad to see such a dedicated and devoted player leave. It makes me sad each time I find another good person has left... especially the ones who have been SO active in the communities. Granted I wish he had played on GL.... but we can't all be prefect! *grins*... anyway he will be missed. I certainly hope he one day reconsiders coming home.... But until then I hope he finds happiness in whatever he decides to do.

Actually you are wrong on that point. DENNAR has been a major figure on LS since the beginning. I have no doubt that his leaving has caused dozens if not a hundred or more others to leave as well. Hardly a spec.
And "lack of commitment" simply does not apply. He was here longer than 99+% of everyone else playing the game, even through LS's historical conectivity problems and warps to days before, lost items, lost skills, lost CHARACTERS... He stayed through it all.

DENNAR, You will be missed.
The first Monday night meeting after I got back (was away almost 2 years) was great until they mentioned that you had gone. I had to go and see for myself that your castle is now someone else's.

I still remember discussing the finer points of our crafts while you trained bowcraft and I(Armatis) carpentry.

Fistandantalus(I never could spell his name right), Flint, Scarlet, Koale, .. It seems everyone from back then is gone now. I don't know anyone left in the game that I knew before Ren or T2A.. or even before LBR, now that you're gone.


Most of us that have been around since the OSI division was handling things can see how bad things have become in terms of handling cheaters and general customer service. (not that OSI was ever great)
But there is some minor hope. Mythic doesn't even list UO as one of its games, so maybe they will be willing to sell it to a company more willing to invest the time the game needs.


Airmid is doing her best to keep some community spirit on LS, but with the constant loss of older players and the events drawing so many off to do this and that, it is difficult I'm sure.

I was refering to him as a player leaving, causing other Players to close their accounts. Each of them could have any number as well.
I have already learned of 6 other players who left since he did. 4 of them were friends and 1 a guildmate.


So many on these forums yak on and on about how much Better things were Pre-this or Pre-that, Pre-AoS or Pre-Tram primarily.
Dennar leaving is, for many, a sharp reminder that all of those things are gone to stay. He has always been there, since the beginning, helping and planning, and hosting events and parties. Much of the remaining LS community is due- in one fashion or another -to him.

The sale of his infamous castle pales in comparison to what Dennar means to Lake Superior and UO as a whole. I say means and not 'meant' because when good people move on they have the sense to entrust what they know to others. It is not the material things, pixels are not tangible. It is the spirit of friendships made when no actual contact has even happened. It is the ability to present good arguments for the sake of the community of whatever skills or problems need attention and do so in a way that reaches the suits in a conference room because it is respectful and intelligent. It is also the ability to walk away as a consumer when you feel your time has come.

Dennar had the ego to know great things could be accomplished. By the way, ego is not always a bad word. It could simply mean, "what if" with the courage to realize that possibility.

That is what I have learned. RepoMan did the same and got me wondering myself. Dennar took this lil mage with big Britain Invasion dreams and said "you can." He said, "here's how" when more events and meet ups and festivals were presented. He gave more than funds, and that was plenty. He gave of himself even when he was taken advantage of. He took his licks in Fel understanding that is the world he chose to walk in and he took his time with others when no one else could spare it.

To lose 22 accounts is not what should make any Dev lean forward towards the monitor when reading this. It is why Dennar and others like him are saying goodbye when it is not because of boredom but because of game mechanics issues that have been around sometimes as long as they have. Yes cheating will always be a part of gaming, there are far too many intelligent people who like the challenge and use it for personal gain. But some things can be done and some vets have the insight to offer. Ask those who have invested much for years for input. It is there.

To Dennar: You are someone to know and love and I am proud I can say both. Take care and I look forward to seeing Dennar in another place and time *smiles*

Of Dennar, I can say that he was a consummate businessman. He made investments--in sheer number of accounts, in his wares, and in the LS community--and I think he got a good return on them. Judging from the responses I've seen, he's certainly left his mark on the shard!

First of all, if EAUO had ignored its customers more, UO would be a better game. You don't want the typical idiot player's cries being what forms this game do you? That's what got us Trammel, item insurance, Spring Cleanups, spell channeling weapons, potions for archers, greater dragons, etc.

Second cheaters have always and will always be in the game. Sometimes the developers will, much later, make things a bit more right deleting duped gold and items and deleteing accounts, etc. So why the current state should bother you so much, I don't know.

Third, if these two issues bother you so much, then what took you so long? It's been like this since EA took over yet you remained. If you've decided to leave, I'm sorry, but it's not for these reasons.

Just once, I'd just like to hear somebody admit what really drove them from the game instead of turning themself into some kind of martyr.

It looks like I'm coming back too late. I was kinda hoping to see you again and reminisce about old times.

You may not remember me, since I've been gone for years, but I used to be in the same guild with you, Flint, Gor, etc. Flint actually gave me my start in UO, and even gave me a black dye tub back when they were rare. I had my first vendor in Gor's keep, selling black dyed clothing, and armor. I was around when you first opened Castle Dennar. (I even had a couple of vendors there for a little while!) I left the game shortly after your infamous Trammel/Felucca war. You guys gave me the best gaming memories out of any MMO I have played.

I saw some semi-recent posts by you when I came around and decided to come back to UO. I was very pleased to see a name from my old UO days. I was hoping to look you up and see if you remembered old Angus MacGregor. (or Tavish MacGregor or Iain MacGregor, my old characters).

I'm very sorry to hear that you've left. You were always such a great guy, and you made the server a much more enjoyable place to play.

Thank you very much. I've always ranked UO as the best MMO I've ever played, and it was people like Dennar who really made it so enjoyable.

I'll be starting off brand new in UO again, since I can't retrieve my old account info, and I hope I can rekindle the old fun I used to have here.

I expect it'll be a little rough as a newbie, considering how far behind I'm going to be, but hopefully it'll be a nice ride learning the game all over again.
