An Interesting Find

I really don't understand why they didn't do something like this. I think that KR is a better 2d than 2d, but it's still 2d. If you want to try and bring in new players you have to at least come close to modern graphics and offer a real 3d with rotatable camera angles and first person angles like other modern games.

I really hate those type of games. Thats why I have played UO since 99. And Ultima PC games before that.

first person angles
First person angles bite.

Why do you ask?

No peripheral vision. Nuf said.

Give me an overhead so I can see wtf is sneaking up on me any day. Even when I played WoW I had the zoom all the way out so I could see some stupid Rogue trying to sneak up behind me. :gun:

Silly Rogue. :stretcher:

Fully 3d environment could be cool but the planned characters from those images make me glad it never saw the light of day.
Actually I think some of the work is technically pretty impressive. Whether you like the look of it or not, that phoda is extremely well done. Kinda looks like she's ready for gun fight at the O.K. Corral though... :)

Well, there are disadvantanges and advantages to each. With the fixed overhead view you don't have the range for viewing. I think the WoW view zoomed out is probably the best simulation of a person with peripheral vision (not that I like WoW, don't get me wrong... ;) ). Someday though in the very near future, probably within ten years, we'll be able to wear a head set with stereo vision and a much wider viewing angle.

I'm pretty sure you can already buy what will be the first versions of this kind of thing, but I doubt if there are many games which fully support them, and I don't know if they are fully immersive with full stereo vision capabilities, but it is only a matter of time.

Alternately, you can say we have them to blame for the terrible SE and ML art. Obviously had they done ALL the art for the game it would have looked wonderful, but they can't match styles up to save their life it seems.

I do like that stone stove however... wonder why it never made it to us. And I do wish they would have let them realize their 3D... it looks wonderful.

I was browsing around for some materials and came across this page:

http://www.criticalmassinteractive.com/clients/EAGames/EAGames.html

The last set of assets on the page shows what could have been instead of KR and what was planned for the game.

Fully 3d environment could be cool but the planned characters from those images make me glad it never saw the light of day.
For the life of me, I cannot understand this. Just as I can't understand anyone liking the current KR characters.
These images look very good, and the current KR are horrible.

But maybe there's something I just don't get. Why do you not like them? Do you prefer the anime style?

I agree Connor. One of the reasons I have stuck with UO is the perspective. I can't play first person to save my life...

I do not prefer the anime style in a medieval rpg setting and that is kinda what these look like well maybe not anime but very cartoonish and I prefer a more realistic look to things.

I think the art looks great but putting it into uo would be awful.

It all comes down to the characters though everything else looks ok.

Personally I don't like 1st person angles either, that's why I'd want a moveable camera angle to allow for overhead, but a first person angle seems to be what a lot of the more modern games have and since I'm assuming the point of a new client was to attract more people to the game it's an option that I'd want a new client to have.

Multi view would be cool actually. A single client that allows you to do a 3/4 style overhead view with the ability to rotate in a circle or switch to an over the shoulder style 3d view or ever go into first person would be nice.

However UO just wasn't built to handle that type of a change. They would probably have to rewrite the entire game from scratch to make all the changes correctly and then import data from the existing game to prevent any loss of characters items homes and so on. Even if they did that the chance to lose something in the process is there.

The best option would be to spent a smaller portion of time and money of the next few years developing and testing it then have a closed and open beta and let players login on the test to check for missing stuff. If they were confident that there was not a lot of loss and people actually adopted the whole thing they could then move forward with a live version. If it flopped they would have minimal losses to development resources and the game as we know it would remain as we know it because they didn't have to fool with the existing game.

As long as the Legacy 2d client is in existence, ANY options for alternative viewpoints are not possible.

I thought it was possible back when the old 3D client was still around. I've seen video from a player made client that was compatible with 2D called Iris. It was only usable on illegal free shards, but it was my understanding that it worked with 2D. Graphics weren't that great, but it did seem to have varying camera angles. I think there's still a video of it on youtube.
