First Memory of UO?

I remember the 1st time I logged into UO (Nov/Dec 1997) and was running around Empath Abbey. I created a warrior named Mrbogus and had swords and fishing. Well I decided to test out my combat skills so I equiped a dagger ..... not knowing that it was a fencing weapon not a swords weapon .... and attacked a Chicken. Well a short time later I was seeing black and white and never logged on that char again. Shortly there after I picked up a strategy guide and read up on all I needed to know to beat that damn chicken. 10 Years later ..... I still cringe at the sight of a chicken because it gives me flashbacks of being a newbie. Anyways just thought Id share that story and I hope others will share their memories too.

I walked out of the main Vesper bank and was repeatedly ganked 6-7 times by some reds. I became quite upset and tried to return the game to the store but they didn't accept refunds. So I took the game home and gave it another shot.

And I'm glad i did, I played it for 8 years.

I would have to say some of my most memorable first memories would be killing stuff on my archer that people said should be left alone. I used to take blood elementals and balrons (back when they were actually hard) out with my mage/archer.

I also remember my first trip to fel and getting greifed at the gate.

I also remember having a bard with 50/50 music/provoke that used to do balrons/bloods in Blood Dungeon (Ilshenar) and Meer Mages/Meer Eternals in the temple by Compassion. That character had nowhere near finished skills and was able to make 1,000,000 a week (back when doing that was actually hard).

Logged in was quite lost during beta and tried to talk to a NPC that I thought was a PC for about 10 minutes before I realize what was going on......

Decided to give mining a try.... half hour after frog hopping ore to forge, a char with a red name ran up to me and here are the following conversation:

Me: Hail how goes it
Red guy: Why aren't you running?
Me: Why should I be running?
Red guy: because of this... "Vas Flame"
Me: OooOOo Wtf

yeah the first day was funnnn

Seeing my first gargoyle it was glowing red, I ran it must of seemd half way between Britain to Trisnic before I stopped. I didn't know how to use recall or gate yet and just started running. This must have been the first day of playing, I had yet to experiance the kindness of pkers. When I did I decided to make a thief so I could get use to seeing the black screen with out panicking anymore.

Lets see, my first day on Pac, back in June of 98' I grabbed my trusty newbie dagger and decided to do some PvM. I remember thinking "a bird, that should be easy enough"

Knowing nothing about needing to actually have the fencing skill, let alone the ability to heal myself in one way or another, I headed in for an "easy" fight. It was easy all right, about 6 seconds later, that little bird had me red lined and running, and screaming like a school girl, for my life toward the West Brit bank.

Darkfall seems to be shooting themselves in the foot before they even start. If you can't handle ffa pvp then stand in the city and craft? First person view in a MMORPG? Do they really understand the majority of the MMORPG player base at all?

Will be interesting to see how this game does, and I wouldn't be against trying it. I just think they don't have a very good grasp on their market and are making quite a few mistakes straight out of the gate.

My first character Athenat was born in Vesper. I ran out of town and saw someone kill someone and drop the dead's fishing pole by the body. I ran south and saw an orc mage by the beach there. I figured it was just an orc, how hard could it be? OOOOoooooOOO

The birth of UO-R, [1999], and the invasions of Brit while at the bank in 'Young'. We were lucky as a fellow player took the time to explain to us the banking rules, he had been playing just a few more months then we, so knew the rules of the land, but Trammel was new to him as well, so we pretty much ran together, several of us got together and pool gold to buy housing deeds for placement day, which was several months after UO-R went live. So we all worked hard to get gold for that day.

We did not have enough gold for a large house, but did manage to get enough to purchase a small deed for every person. So we all placed, scatter all over the lands. Since we had only the one account I share with my daughter and wife the joys of playing this game.

Actually, my "very first" memories of UO was sending in my $2 and getting the Beta CD. Installing it, waiting 2+ hours to patch, then getting the message, "the server is currently full, try again later".

This went on every night after work for about a week and i discovered CDs don't fly very well.

hehe. On one hand all these first expieriences suck, and on the other hand, they are all funny as hell.:)

I bought the game shortly after the server wipe. My PC did not meet all the min requirements. But is could still play, but i was really slow. "Hmmmmm, what can i do, that does not require speed"? Oh Oh Oh, Stealing. So i created Sir Steals a Lot. When i logged in, low and behold i saw my first unattended macroer. I got several hundred regents, and only died 2 times.

"What other evil things can i do"? Then i saw a chest go, "Boom", and the other player died. A little reasearch later, and a ploy of my dead body with a trapped chest on it, and, "Boom". "Hey Honey, I can blow people up in this game"..........ah hahahaha.

But when i saw you could own a Castle..........I read the book about how they were for large Guilds, or alliances, i said screw that, someday, somewhere, somehow, "I" will have my own castle. hehehe, and i do,:gun:

Going around buying 20-30 points of every skill I could, not realizing there was a cap of 700.

I was so disappointed when someone explained the 700 point skill cap.

My first memory of Ultima Online is previews of Age of Shadows on the television, back in 2003. However my first gaming moments with Ultima Online would have to be late 2004 or early 2005 when I bought the Jewel Case version of Samurai Empire. Loaded it up, opened up 3D and made a Necromancer, did the quest and then got extremely confused. Walked around a bit, went North of Umbra and tamed about a dozen little Skittering Hoppers. Then I got bored, uninstalled and canceled my subscription.

Forward to October '05, got the 8th Age, and oh lookie. I'm bloody obsessed with the game.

So you hate tamers because they can't be tamer/bard/mage/warrior/blacksmiths? If they could do that would you stop ragging on tamers? :p

The Bad Memory,

Being on the top of the Moonglow Bank and getting my keys out of the bank, thinking I hit the Recall ICON when I actually, must have, hit an offensive spell ICON and got guard whacked. The saving grace? I never had the rune to my house and my keys on me at the same time, one or the other but never both.

The Good Memory,

Placing my first house, a large house with a patio that had the Forge and Anvil.

The Fond Memories of Community,

My boat at the pier in Moonglow (precedes my First House)and how all of us "Boat People" watched out for each other.

The Profound memory,

A real life friend and I coming to the conclusion that if you wanted to succeed at UO, then Gold was the path.

The Adrenalin Memory,

Two of my in game friends and I would run around one of 3 Dungeons (Despise were the Dragons were, was the favored because of the Dragons) trying to Kill each other AND JUST WAITING for a PKR Sweep. :)

My first days on UO Jan 2000 lol.. I started out a fisherman, swordsman, mage and everything in between. A good friend got me started and bought me a deed for a small stone workshop in Fel (at the time I didnt know the differernce). I didnt even have enough gold to buy a horse, so I ran around everywhere for the first month. I got killed by deer, birds, and this one dang ogre that killed me a million times because I was trying to get my 50 gold pieces back lol. I hunted in the fel cemetary near brit and was the pvp punching bag. One guy felt sorry for me because he killed me about 100 times that he started giving me things he looted off other players. I never could understand why they wouldn't loot my bone armor I got off of skeletons. I will never forget the days I would sit at Brit bank and wait for someone to drop something on the ground, so I could pick it up and go sale it for gold.

For the first few month I used the place below as my secret and safe spot to log out. A friend had told me that no one could see me behind that house.

Well, it worked. I've never logged in and found myself robbed or killed. :)

Most of the time I spend collecting reagents in the forest between Britain and the swamp.

I sold the reagents to the NPC mages and one day I had enough money -around 1500 gp if I rememnber correct - to buy a GM made light archer suit (iron of course) and a katana.

Now I was not a collector anymore but heavily equipped warrior! :D

A bull was the first challenge and shortly after I attacked it, my screen turned monocrome.

Deer and cows went down easier and soon I could afford a suit made of bronze - which I lost to a PK a few days later. :(

I still went to the forest to collect reagents. Now I used the reagents to train magery.

Yes, I had magery on my warrior. Recall was a life saver sometimes and later I could make gates so I could bring my guild wherever we wantet to go hunting.

I actually kept magery on him till the day we got soulstones and I could stone it and raise my paladin skills. :)

Well, I could go on but it's late and I should go to bed. :sleep2:

I'm not a twinkie...I just chose to play the most powerful template with the best hopes of dominating the PvM side of the game. That doesn't make me a twink it just makes me well informed.

I Started life somewhere around Yew, and i just wandered around for a bit looking for actual players in the woods there. Then i ran into a Wizard named Xan, and asked him if he was a real person. He was, and from Belgium. He showed me Britain and where the action was.

I really liked that guy, but i didn't like his tamer friend who thought he was in charge, because everytime we moved he told us (i thought):

all follow me
all follow me
all follow me

Before AoS magery was the way to go on a warrior if you wanted to fight the harder stuff. I miss those days. I stopped playing warriors when AoS came out.

I didn't call you a twinkie because of the template you play. It's because you're soft and full of goo. :)

Oh and thanks for confirming that tamers are overpowered.

I said most powerful. They are far from overpowered. If you can't figure out how to run a pet off screen and double back to 1-3 shot a tamer (we give up a lot of personal strength to get those pets) then you just haven't adapted well to tamers.

After downloading the beta on my 56K modem overnight, I was pretty excited to finally get into the game.

So what did I do the first time I logged in? I fished just outside of the Minoc Smithy and used "Evaluate Intelligence" on everyone who was around there. That got my Int way up in a couple of hours. Boring boring boring.

Day two was alot more exciting. I was repeatedly killed by a dragon in the bottom of Destard.

In reflection...

We really could debate this all night and I would still be right.

You are obviously a tamer hater because you can't figure out how to run the pets off screen then come take out the tamer with no defense skills who is on foot.

If you ever stop being so biased or learn how to atually deal with "overpowered" tamers then please let me know.

LS moonglow dec97, walked out of the south gate and saw 2 blue tents, spent first 2 hours, trying to open the dang chest that was in that tent.
Later found out it was a player's tent and the chest was locked and private to him. LOL

how many out there remember placing tents?

I placed a LOT of tents, so many that DD got a ... bit bent out of shape over it.

*Shrug* It was legal, it was before the first round of House / Boat price increments.

Using the Tents and Boats, I effectivly Walled off the North side of the Cove on the North side of Trinsic, from the forest on the west, to the Graves/Swamp on the North to the Water on the East with a Jog North along the East Coast to include that long strip of land. It was mine, no one had access to it :)

Was it an abuse/exploit? Probably but it was within the game rules done legitimately and it prevented a number of house Breakin Exploits from being MY problem.

I was a high school science teacher and I would let my students use the classroom comp to play UO if they finished their work. Well they were constantly asking me to try this game and I kept telling them no. Finally they literally gathered round me and insisted that I give it a try. I sat down, started a char on Pacific, started running around, was totally shocked, and have been hooked ever since.

Early 2001, right after UO:R came out. I remember walking south out of Haven and taming a handsome gray horse in my first 15 minutes of play. I thought about naming him “Silver” but named him “MrEd” instead. I honestly did not expect to be playing the game for long and, therefore, had invested about 10 seconds of thought into my character name of “Dr Dolittle“.

Shortly after I rode my new horse back to town some poor sod decided to attack a lizard man. The creature was much tougher than he had anticipated and it was beating the stuffing out of him. Everybody in town ganged up on the lizard man and it was killing people right and left; there were bodies all over. We finally got it killed, though. I recall being amazed at how tough that monster was.

Later on I ventured out into the town of Britain. A fellow I met there hooked me up with another newbie so we could use our tickets to get ranger armor. He offered me a severed head in exchange for my armor. I asked what good a severed head was and he replied that some people collected them. I politely declined that offer and he upped the ante to a magical sword; an accurate katana of ruin, if I recall correctly. We had to pass through a funny golden colored gate to get to his house where the sword was stored. It was a good thing I was still [young] as I had no clue where we were going. After we made the trade the guy recalled away and I wandered around a couple of days until I found my way back to Britain.

I bought a second copy of UO so that my son and I could play together. My son got his character to the Brit Bank where we were going to meet up. For some strange reason we could not see each other even though we were both at the north west corner of the bank. Finally I paged a Counselor and explained the situation. The Counselor asked me to ask my son if the trees had leaves.

My first memory is arrivng in Haven and going about learning how to work the various abilities I had chosen. Within maybe 10 minutes another young ran into town being chased by an orc, so I jumped in to help and we took it out. It had a moonstone on it and he gave it to me because he had no idea what it did and he said it seemed like I did. Was a few hours later a Companion showed up to talk to me, afterwhich I trained for a day or so, then left the isle with him and took a short tour of several areas of the land (Vesper, Delucia, and one of his friends' houses to get me a runebook). Honestly, I still look up to him to this day, tho i've only rarely seen him and he doesn't remember me at all from that two-day meeting (I thanked him once and he said as much).

Such bitersweet memories, yet I treasure them dearly.

When I first started I spent several minutes 'haunting' (tabbing in and out of war mode) an npc. I don't remember how I died but it was probably a lot less embarassing lol.

Running scrolls from despise barrels back to the mage shop in brit to sell.

Having epic battles in glow cemetry and being impressed when some l33t macer came in and one hit killed stuff. They told me (& some other newbs) they had 100 str 100 dex and I was all zomg!... They later showed us how to see-saw stats which was nice of em.

Showing off knowing all the words for glacial staffs.

Following random people through strings of gates eventually landing me trapped in a house in fel, getting pk'd and looted. I got res'd went back and found a few of my belongings still on the corpse, I had no idea where I was so started following the nearest road only to get killed by another player who took the other half of my stuff. I eventually made it to some town and some kind player dropped a tram stone for me.

Duelling someone who was wearing a val plate suit because he took the mic out of my gold plate suit, winning and making off through the mg with his plate suit just as his buddy came in to gank me.

Looting people and selling their stuff back to them.

Being taken from despise (by some vet mage) to the titan beach in T2A, dying no end of times and getting shouted at for continually moving when invised.

Later on my second char a mage/bard, killing an entire guild with 1 ev except for my buddy who cleverly trapped it in the guild house. I summoned another while he was in there and killed his favourite mare (he still holds the grudge). The guild masters wife logged in and died to the ev trapped in the house.

Ive read quite a few posts of people starting after tram was created , I truely feel sorry for you because before tram UO was a totally diff. monster. There was this thing called risk , not many people know what that is anymore because the game has become WAY to easy. I thought it was funny the 1st week Tram was active I had this 15 year old little punk talking MAD trash to me calling me a newbie and stuff like that ..... but he refused to go to fel and see who the newbie was. Back in the day there was a little more respect knowing that if you stepped out of guard zone someone you pissed off just might kill you. You HAD to meet up with people to explore because there was more safety in numbers when a red tried to kill you. I still love this game ...... but sometimes I wish they just let things be and kept it the way it was. :sad2:

I was running around north of Minoc when I stumbled on what could only have been a guild war. There were bodies everywhere, both red and blue, but not a ghost to be seen. In the middle of the field of corpses, a single mongbat spawned.

I didn't know anything about PvP at the time, so I thought the mongbat did it.

I was frightened of them for weeks.
