don't want this to turn into a 2D vs KR nonsense thing, just have a question about downloading patches for KR

those that know me know that I'm a 2D diehard.. that said, I *do* want to give KR a fair shot, be able to say it was not tossed off without an effort

so I thought I'd take a shortcut and get the swift disc (sounds fast, don't it :/ ) which loaded nicely and then clicked the icon and began the patching process.....

so my question is.... should it take this long?

Depending on the version of the Swift CD, your net connection, and the Patch server's transfer rate, yeah, it could be taking that long. There have been some pretty damned big patches for KR (last main KR patch being 800 Meg), and depending on how many you have to deal with, it could take a while.

Yes, for some reason every patch for KR is ridiculously large.

I think so. THis is from other readings in Stratics... basically the disc they send you is from like July 2007. In September and October they put in huge patches. Like 1 a week for 3 weeks or something. Back then people were complaining about doing them one at a time and what slapdash way to run a client that is.... so now you are having to download everything from July to present.

The "ridiculously large" KR patches are do to the Devs tweaking the graphics and animation. Since KR uses the same animation style as 2d (except with higher end graphic quality and a LOT higher framerate, the amount of graphical data they have to patch is a LOT BIGGER than if they had moved forward with polygon/skin based (ala the 3d client) technology.

However due to the Devs trying to placate the 2d crowd, initial KR patches have been huge.

I'd think so.

They haven't kept the disc updated (which you really should guys....stuff like this looks really bad).

So in terms of the amount of patching you gotta do, the disk is about the same as the download.

What the disk does is allow you to avoid also spending time downloading the pre-patch, basic client.

There's a lot of worthy stuff in KR....I am not a fan and I don't use it, but I do run tests periodically.

And as a non-fan, I say this with sincerity: It's worth trying out.

Pain in the ass patches regardless it's definitely worth taking the time to give a fair chance to; I'm glad you are.

Good lord, the disc must be from beta. But yeah, even the server version can take a long time to patch. Took me about an hour on a super duper fast cable. At least a couple hours on DSL. Anything slower, or if you started from an old disc, I could easily see many hours.

uokr_win32_2-50-0-3.rtp ( 813,259,975 bytes )

uokr_win32_2-53-0-2.rtp( 3,033,828 bytes )

Stealth Jeremy an email ... the swift disc was known to be needing some updating ... as were the DL-sites ...IF the sites "got it"
the older prior versions should have been scrapped (get us alllll a fresh swift disc ... all I'm saying)

Meh the last 3 were concurrent patches with 2d fixing the same thing in both clients... they don't really count as real KR patches either in terms of size or content IMO.

I miss the mega-KR patches. You could measure how much KR was improving back then. The good old days.

I want KR Patchurday as well!

The reason patching takes so long is the approach they took to storing the graphic animations. At the moment, sprite models take up 1.86GB of hard disk space in 8 different files. If they need to tweak an animation, they have to make 1.86GB of duplicate files. It is incredibility inefficient for the type of patching method being use and slows down the process a lot.

This would also be a barrier to adding new creature models. While the single creature might only be a megabyte or two, you still have to move around 1.86GB of files.
