This post is in response to a question posed to me on another of my posts.

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?

Thx guys I've actually been curious of this for a long time.

ANSWERS:

1) Have only EVER used a Transfer Token ONCE to obtain something only immediately available to me from that other shard.

2) I have placed deep roots upon BAJA and will NEVER leave BAJA regardless of any shard's population or lack thereof.

3) Nope.

An SoS (some seem not to understand when I sign off "An SoS" -- it is BOTH an abbreviated form of Ancient Sosarian AND a play on the phrase "an SOS" being a cry for immediate help)

I started on Pacific, back in the day, then created new characters years later on the much smaller, quieter, and friendlier Lake Austin. I toyed with the idea of going back, but I'm afraid I just like the laid-back and close-knit community on LA; no more transfers for me. :D

No. Xfer tokens are for FL.. they dont know how to make new characters.

Doesnt matter to me.. im on at odd times for the most part.. either catch the dinner rush, or miss it.

No. Well, i did play in Shadowclan on Cats back in the day when Pacific would go down for 3 hours of maint. daily at noon...

Yes Ive transfered all 5 of my Chars from Chessy to LA because of overcrowding. I used ingame gold for all 5 codes and all gold came from selling houses on both shards. I Love LA because we are a small tightnit group of players and hunting is wide open.

1: I've used them for cross sharding gifts/items like sashes I've gotten from EM events on other shards.

2: I prefer high population because running around a ghost town of a shard is boring, MMO's are supposed to be about interaction.

3: I play Atlantic, the highest population shard, and have an 18x18 there, I have no need to go elsewhere.

1) never used one.

2) higher pop. was once active solely at drachenfels (back in the good ole days when this shard pulsed). when I came back, I started on europa, since drachs was nearly empty. population means something going on, any time; and lots of opportunities for eg vendors selling stuff to newcomers etc. Why would you play a mmporg if you like to be alone? Will never get this logic... Further: If a shard is really populated, you see so many different styles of playing --> simply a fresh feeling, and stimulating for trying something differnt. Today, europa is as empty as drachenfels was when I left.

3) see 2)

1) yes. our guild left sonoma and moved to chessy for the higher population

2) i prefer the bigger population. imho chessy is a great shard with good players, vibrant trade and a nice amount of player run events (auctions and such)

3)same as above really, i used 4 tokens to bring my chars over and soulstoned the skills of my crafter and recreated her on chessy.

i will never leave chessy.

1. Yes, I have
2. I prefer higher population shards, as I play this game to interact with other people.
3. I have moved shards several times, but only once did I actually transfer a character... which was from Legends to Lake Superior. I would have transfered more, if I was able to afford it at the time.

3. I always create new char...have 5-7 on all shards most with atleast 110 in skills...to cheap to buy transfer tokens

3. Created a Character on Atlantic for that big Factions event. (which seems to have died in the gate)

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?

yep, used several over the years, the firsts were when we moved four charactors from LS to Sonoma. The reason we moved was we had started on LS in 99, but due to LS being down so much found ourself playing on several other shards, but our best charactors were still on LS and we missed them.

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?

Smaller population, as to why, because of housing, we don't have a keep or Castle, but we do have some larges homes and those we were not able to get on shard with larger populations.

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?

nope.

Thx guys I've actually been curious of this for a long time.

1. Yes I have. I bought an account that had a very good char on another shard and transfered him to my home shard.... Also at some point I became irritated with some of the folk on the shard I was on and got the grass is always greener syndrom and went to another shard ..... the grass was infact NOT greener there and I missed some of my friends.... so I returned....

2. I play on Great Lakes.... that's where I started and after my brief move to Legends, I am certain it will be where I stay.....

3. See above. And I don't plan to move anymore... with over 40 characters moving just isn't an option..... would be way to expensive.

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?
- No, not yet.

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?
- Both. Higher for more interaction with others. Smaller for more freedom to do as I please without waiting in line. If I had to choose I would choose smaller at this time.

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?
- Created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard - yes. Because of answer to question 2.

Thx guys I've actually been curious of this for a long time.

1. Yup, moved to find PvP across different shards. Also xfered to west coast to get better connection.
2. Bigger populations are best, although they tend to lead to zergy guilds. ATL is all large guilds, and Pac (biggest West Coast) is zergy as well.
3. I moved from Atl (my main shard) to less populated shards. I have xfered chars from Atl to Pacific, Legends, Origin (back when people played it), Lake Superior. I also have chars on Cats and Napa.

Have no idea. I started on LS over 10+ years ago and that's still where I play except when I play on SP.

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?
No. The only other shard(s) I have played was on GL when I was a counselor (I made that char for that purpose and that was the only char I had there) and I play SP.

1. Used one once because when I returned to the game after a long break, my remaining UO friends had moved from Napa to Catskills. The move was funded by one of those friends.

2. I prefer to play on Catskills for the community, not the population.

3. I've created characters on a lot of shards for a lot of reasons. Population is not one of those reasons.

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?

Should be why? why not? No, but its nice to know they're there IF I ever want one. IF someone wants something(of mine) ... they can come and get it. If theres some event on a shard that I'm not on, logout, change shards login ...No problem remembering "who I am and what I can do there".

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?

yes, BOTH, duh! Depends on what I "feel like". High pop shards are still a bit disappointing. Though the potential still remains. I have yet to see/hear of, a truely large and Epic battle ...and no, none of the harrower "rumbles" is "epic enough" to satisfy the scale of which I dream, I'm talking about 100s and thousands ... near shard crashing numbers, over at least weeks if not months and years E p i c ... *shrugs* till then (cause I'm still looking) smaller pop's will suffice, again .... depends on my "mood" as to which I'll log onto ...<<< That's what a persistant state MMORPG IS all about, not about a mandatory nothing.

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?

See 2. not a one sided question, I've characters established on both sizes, and in the begining it was High to Low ... now (if starting from the same shard, I'd be able to say Low to High) .... {{without the need for the speed of a transfer}}

1+2+3= No, I haven't been limited by tokens ... as much as I have not been: Limited by the non-existant account-to-account transfers.

Transfer token usage - not at all. EA still has not really satisfied the "improved service" portion for the rate increase years ago. Why payt them even more?

Shardplay - I started on Pac way back when, then switched to Atl by creating characters there. When I returned after a hiatus, I have made LA my home but I do play some others shards for the heck of it.

Token/Create Chars on higher pop shard - token usage ... as stated before, not ever. I have chars on Cats, Origin and LS other than LA. Created and in the process of being worked thru training.

1) Yes I use transfer tokens. I play on a small shard and sometimes it's hard to get rare/special items. I transfer stuff from the larger shards.
2) I used to enjoy playing on a smaller shard, but now I think my shard is too small. :( It seemed like a closer knit community but now it's just empty.
3) I recently transferred a character to a higher population shard and am working up other characters there too.

3. yes, have made a character on a larger shard to visit a friend who plays on that shard and on another just to see what it was like and because my daughter wanted to try it out.

1.) Used one to bring a bunch of old stuff from GL to Baja. I started there in 98 but there were far too many people for my tastes.

2.) I prefer smaller pop shards because of the tight community and they seem to have less asshats when things like events come up or new things are added to the game.

3.) I have highly developed chars on Chess, Pac, GL, Baja, Sonoma, Origin, and 1 good char on SP. Have some mediocre chars on ATL, Belhae, Napa.

All in all I have lil reason to play on a high pop shard for the sake of the higher population. More people don't a good shard make IMO.

1. Yes twice, once after a friend gave us an account but he played Pac and we play Baja, so we brought over one of his good chars and stuff to Baja.
Second time, was during the rubble craze, a friend helped us get over to another shard where she was picking up and item, we picked up the item and brought it back. Other than that never and only one of those was purchased by us, the first one. The others were from an IDOC.

2. I prefer a moderate population. It's just more cozy and comfortable for me.

3. NEVER!! Born on Baja and will stay on Baja. I have other chars on many other shards but only to visit and Xshard trade. I visit Lake Austin, where another friend transfered to sometimes, but I only have 1 char there and she's nothing major.

I have a few other transfer tokens in my possession now, but they'll more than likely be sold. Well save one, and that has a promise on it.

1. YES, fairly frequently. i have chars on 10 different shards keeping an eye on low to mid-level rares and collectibles or anything that strikes my decorating fancy (RUBBLE!). one of my favorite in-game hobbies has always been (and always will be) running through the lands seeking out player vendors and perusing their goods. i also LOVE the small ways in which each shard is unique. i love finding those unique little things in my travels, it makes me happy that each shard is slightly different. i hope they never change that! i try to limit my transfer token usage to one token per month...

2. BOTH. my 18x18 is on napa. napa has been my home since i started 4+ years ago. i love napa. i left it once, and moved 4 of my chars to atlantic. once i arrived on atlantic i enjoyed the large population, but housing was ridiculous and i got tired of the anonymity of it all. so i moved all 4 chars BACK to napa and won't leave again. however, i also have 2 fully trained chars on atlantic to satisfy my need for player interaction. i play both napa and atlantic in equal amounts. slaying dragons at fire temple is better on napa because there's no one else there. but events and stuff are better on atlantic because there's so many people around.

3. BOTH. as mentioned above with the napa-to-atlantic-back-to-napa move. but like i said in #1 i also have chars on 10 other shards, and i created those chars on those shards. once they have enough bounty from 6-12 months of casual vendor shopping, i transfer them to either napa (my house) or atlantic (my luna vendor).

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?

To get a needed item that is not available on my shard, or to sell something if no one on my shard wants it.

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?

Don't really care, as long as it is small enough that competition is not insane for decent hunting spots.

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?

1. Do you use transfer tokens? If so, why?

Yes, I have used 6 for a total of 3 round trips. Trip one was to join a small group of close friends in working Champ spawns on a lower population shard. I took one char and used it there for over a year and then xfered back when we all decided we were done there. The other two round trips were strictly to feed my rubble addiction and were simply shopping trips. I received all 6 tokens during the big random item give away.

2. Do you prefer to play on a shard with a higher population or a smaller population? Why?

Higher, because the point of an online game for me is to interact with others. If I wanted to play alone, I would play a single player game...

3. Have you ever left your shard via transfer tokens to move to a higher population shard or created new chars in order to play on a higher pop shard? If so, why?

I started on Atlantic and am dang glad I did since I can't imagine playing on a less populated shard as my main shard. I love how busy it is!

1. I have used transfer tokens several times. I like to check out various shards and see what's unique and special about them. I also play with a small group of people that enjoys faction fighting and since late last year we've been checking out several of the North American shards that have faction activity. I've moved some of my tamers and thieves around.

2. I have characters on some of the more heavily populated shards, but I definitely prefer the shards with smaller populations. The people playing UO are what make it special; I just don't like to be completely surrounded by a bunch of them all at once. I'm much more comfortable having a bit of breathing room.

3. I can't say I've ever moved to a busier shard. I've definitely moved to smaller shards though to get away from the crowds and to find better housing and for factions. I started out playing and still have a number of characters on Great Lakes; played almost exclusively on Baja for quite a long time and still have a lot of characters there; and lately have been splitting the majority of my playing time between Sonoma, Origin and Legends. I also spend a lesser amount of time playing each week on Pacific, Napa, Atlantic, and Oceania, and occasionally play with my characters on Europa.

2. Low population, meet more intresting people. I've played larger shards and people tend to be on their guard more from being scammed so much.

...Why would you play a mmporg if you like to be alone? Will never get this logic...
One reason could be because non MMORPGs are very rarely updated. Of the few that are require the user to go out of their way to update the game. MMORPG updates are much easier, in comparison.

Another reason could be that some people don't like crowds or hassels. For these people, it's not about being 'alone' specifically, but it being less likely for their playing time to become a hassel because of a greater number of people.

There are some people that like to live in big Cities. There are some people that like to live way out in a country setting. There are some people that like to live in the Suburbs.

I hope this logic helps... if not then oh well, I tried...

i just like to have the option of playing alone if i want to. i don't like to be forced to play in a group. i have never tried to solo anything bigger than a dragon (normal, not super), but i can see why the op of this issue feels how he does. it's nice to have the CHOICE to kill wahtever you want, alone, if you are able to put together the exactly perfect armor & weapon combo, which in itself is a fun challenge. it would irritate me if things like normal dragons suddenly became so tough it was impossible for me to kill them alone (like if they had replaced normal dragons with super dragons instead of adding super dragons). now i'm babbling. i guess even though UO is technically a massive multiplayer game, it still is nice to have the ability/option to do anything/everything alone.

1. Yes. Moved to/created new character on LA when it opened because my husband agreed to return if I would move. Transferred my fave characters a few months later. Moved to Origin when he left again. Probably going back to Chessy soon where I started. I've always loved it there. I also will transfer for an item I REALLY want.

2. Higher. I like that there's almost always someone around, events going on and a wider variety of vendors outside of Luna walls.

3. I've created characters on higher and lower populated shards to get a feel for the community and overall environment. Both have pros and cons. As stated above, I'll likely moved back to Chessy because I do prefer a larger population.

1. No... had no real need to.

2. I prefer the shard that I had started on, since my entire family plays on that shard. For me, the population of the shard does not factor into my gameplay.

3. No again :)

Have Fun!!!

1.) No, I have never used an XFER token.

2.) I play on a low population shard. More room for housing, less players competing for the same resources etc.

3.) See answers #1 and #2---the last thing I would ever do is move to a higher population shard!

1. Once.
2. I prefer higher populations for more interaction, more vendors, etc.
3. I moved away from Great Lakes to Pacific(which is actually a slightly lower population) for the better community, and I am very happy for right now, but I'm not ruling anything out for the future.:)
