Outdated Template?

I haven't played UO in ages... I just started a new account and hoped back in the game to check things out, but a lot has changed. On my previous account I had an archer/fencer combo that I really enjoyed with the following template:

100 Archery
100 Fencing
100 Tactics
100 Anatomy
90+ Healing
100 Parry
90+ Magic Resist

However, with all the changes in the game I'm not sure what a good PvP & PvE template is. With the new attack abilities of each weapon, I assume "Focus" is necessary to be any good in PvP? However doing so will mean I've got to drop either Archery or Fencing (I don't think I'd want to drop anything else in that setup).

As I mentioned, I am starting from scratch. So I'm open to all template ideas, but I do not want much/anything to do with Magic. If possible, Archery & Melee.

I'm making a separate post about Maces vs Swords vs Fencing to try and get a handle on the pros/cons of each one. Please post there as well.

Thanks,

~ Solikos

Oh my, how long's it been since you played?

Your template is indeed outdated.

For a long time, people would have told you that archery/other fighting skill templates (which were awesome back in the day btw) are not viable.

I have noticed several of those hybrids again in recent days. But, in PvP way more than in PvM.

Warriors of all stripes need some kind of mana regeneration, because warriors use mana for special moves and for "spells" associated with the skills Bushido and Chivalry.

Focus is mana regeneration and stamina regeneration. And you can wear any armor you wish.

Meditation is mana regeneration only (just like it was back in the day) but you get A LOT of it. And of course if you meditate actively, your regen rate is really high while you're actively meditating. But you can only use either leather armor, or other armor with the "mage armor" property.

For a warrior character, on a player who has just returned, I'd recommend Focus, so you're not restricted in armor choices. (The "Knight's Armor" set, which is new, and the "Virtue Armor" set, are both non-meddable.)

For PvM, most people will tell you that you either need Chivalry or Bushido or both.

The game has changed an awful lot since that template was viable.

But it's still a lot of fun.

For information, there's here, UOFOrums.com, UOGuide.com (a wiki), and the UO.com main page is being updated slowly.

Welcome back and good luck.

What shard are you on? Some shards leave decent equipment at the banks in New Haven and/or Luna.

Ok, let me add.....

Here are a couple of standard PvM warrior templates.

The Paladin:
Weapon Skill (pick one)
Chivalry
Focus
Tactics
Anatomy
Healing
Resist OR Parry

The Samurai:
Weapon Skill (pick one)
Bushido
Focus
Tactics
Anatomy
Healing
Parry (Parry and Bushido interact).

If you use Bushido, do NOT use a shield.

Again, welcome back, have fun, good luck. We're all here for you.

Yeah... I quit the game shortly after Trammel came out.

Solo PvP pretty much died for my main character. My secondary character was a thief and the game just kept going down hill for him.

Anyway, I guess with all these changes I'll start with a PvE character to get myself back into the game... Jumping right back into PvP in a game I don't fully understand yet will mean a world of pain and frustration.

I currently play on Atlantic, but my lag seems horrid. I walk a few steps, pause, walk a few steps, pause, etc...

Maybe I need to play in the 2D version of the game.

Thanks for the posts.

If you're laggy on Altantic and you live near the region, then yes it's prolly because of KR and not your connection. Try 2D and see what happens. Atlantic is a great shard because it's always busy.

A fencer/archer is one of the most powerful pvp templates in the game atm. Except your skills are a little outdated.

120 arch
120 fenc
105 tact
100 heal
100 anat
115 resist
80 med

Stats: 90/120/65. Wear Spirit of Totem and stam/mana increase armor. My archer hybrid runs with 129 hp/175 stamina/90 mana.

Using balanced bows and EP, this template is nearly unkillable 1v1. Use a nice war fork for disarm/bleed then switch to a composite or xbow and moving shot them to death. Nothing too challenging about this template. The suit isn't that hard to make and a blind kid could play it.

Do you know about the fundamental changes made after you left? Like about item insurance, power scrolls the new "resistances" system, artifacts, and the like?

Hey Solikos, WB! Im quite sure your lag is KR related. You do know that you can get your old account back, right? It sure beats starting over even if ya wish to change templetes. Good luck to ya!
