I've heard many people refer to something called "scripting" and I was curious as to what it was. Is it when someone is using macros? Perhaps someone can let me know. Thanks.

It is using a third party program to perform actions for you with endless boundaries.
(Usually doing something over and over again... Like resource collection)

Don't pursue further information on it, as it will ruin the fun of the game for you :x

Heh...thanks for your post OP. I honestly believe alot of people learn firsthand about scripts for the firstime by reading the boards. After so many ppl complain about the same thing some ppl become desesitized to it. Once this occurs many often try them out for themselves. This is part of human nature.

Ex: as a kid do you remember being told not to touch something because it was hot and then burning yourself on it anyway? same thing!

For example, creating a UOAssist macro is a form of scripting.

When it is referred to on this forum, people are talking about a specific third party program that is not UOPro and it extremely powerful, but generally does not allow actions that you could not perform in the game. For example you can't just create gold out of nothing. It is not a cheat program in the traditional sense of the word cheat. It is only a cheat program because it is not UOPro. The reason it is not UOPro is primarily because it can loop commands. (among other reasons)

  • Finding an activity that will take you a mind-numbing amount of time.
  • Setting up an apparatus for your computer to repeat said actions eternally while you go off and do other things.
  • Coming back days later to find incredible riches accrued by autopilot.

The only problem* with this is that it is cheating. Everything you do in Ultima Online, per the Terms of Service, require that you at least be attending the proceedings.

People script to get billions of gold and resource items without earning them or spending the time doing the drudgery like the rest of us.

/edit

* - Excuse me! That isn't the only problem.
The BIG problem is EA DOES NOTHING TO STOP THEM, even though other players page on obvious scripters.

EA doesn't care if you cheat. However, your fellow players, whom it harms, do.

Technically, no. You can set up an automation IF you can jump to in a minute and respond meaningfully (as to a GM).
it depends on the type of automation. i think the point is there's no way of them knowing if you are using a third party program or if you have a penny jammed on your F1 key looping a UOA macro so they just let you go if you respond.

but remember, they can take action against your account for any reason, including no reason at all. so if they suspect you may being using a program even though you did respond, they might ban you anyway.

So what everyone is saying is that the Ultima Online Economy is seriously messed up due to scripters. Is it even worthwhile to sale items on your own or can some scripter always beat you because they spend 1% of the effort?

Ultima on line designers and many games after the initial coding is done uses scripts to add content to the game.

Those same triggers can be used to make your client do just about anything you want it to do. This includes enlarging the screen size to adding up all your resistances and effects that you have on.

Some scripts are legal such as UO AM and UO assist some are not which I am not allowed to say here.

But usually what people are upset with unattended scripting where one writes or gets a script that is even banned from even those places you can get the illegal scripting tool.

These scripts are wrong to use. Everyone can agree on that even those that use them would have to attests to it but it is just so easy people can not resists the temptation to use them.

It looks like (at least in the near future) that UOKR will stop scripting once the older 2D clients get phased out. Is this true?

A bit more info, Monkey --

There are two kinds of scripting that are very common. The first is resource scripting. That involves setting up a mule in Trammel (rarely in Felucca) to repeatedly harvest a resource (such as wood or ore), timing him to move when the resources exhaust, and then banking off the goods, and repeating now that the first areas have been replenished by the server.

Its rare in Felucca, because PKs are absolutely delighted to find a foolio like this and smash him flat and take his ill-gotten gains.

The other kind of scripting is gold scripting. There are certain situations that make your character pretty much invunerable. For instance, having a high health regen, paired with a slayer wep, pretty much means that you can get mobbed by any number of monsters and never drop very low on health.

Therefore, these scripters outfit themselves as such, and just keep recalling into monster pits, and let autodefend do the rest. Some tamers do this with self-healing pets (like Cu's). The old standby is the Elder Gazer room in Shame. Pop a decent Cu-Hilde in there and wait outside, and your mutt will never die, and eat up EGs for hours and hours. Meanwhile, you just scoop up the gold via a script.

In both cases, Boob McNutt sets up his toon then goes off to work. When he comes home, he has millions of gold or heaps of resources that it would have taken him all day playing legitimately.

Noooooooo-hoooo-hoooo-hooooo--OOO.

Scripters did not destroy our economy into the 5million-for-a-mundane-item farce we have today.... althought they didn't help it.

The economy was destroyed when some lowlife in 1999 figured out how to dupe a bank check, and told his friends, and every shard got deluged with a gigantic ocean of bogus gold.

And it took OSI THREE YEARS to stop that. Each day, more bogus gold made things worse.

Even before EA, the powers that be don't exactly take it too seriously when something balance-crippling hits us.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that is their intent, it will not work though.

Even if they phased out the 2D Clients they would continue on without EA.

The logical thing for EA to do is work with these third party groups rather then ignoring them or avoiding them. Or now changing their triggers at EA client side, which was the worst thing they could of done. This opens a whole new can of worms.

With the intensive system requirements of KR, if they phased out 2D they would loose a good portion of the player base. I think they are fully aware of this now and why KR is so poorly involved in current event, it is designed for 2D by their own statements and even more so from their actions. The threads of fate/love didn't even have a graphic in KR last time i checked. The 'trick' of the dread warhorse doesn't display at all in KR.

So they are a long way from getting rid of 2D and if they do I can't imagine how many accounts will be closed the same day.

close 2d and say bye bye to pvpers.
i'm willing to try pvp on KR but that's only because i haven't played the game at all in 6 months. you can't expect to just shut down 2D and expect everyone to stay on board. they aren't going to. they may come back later on.

Not sure why you say that.. I PvPed last night in KR and was amazed that I could out run my chasers. Have seen this when running side by side with guild mates that were in 2D as well. Personally I prefer KR for some templates as it does have some nice features, not all my chars are in KR though some i still prefer 2D.

There are players who PvP with KR.... however they must have some really kicking computers... as I can't even leave my house in KR it takes 2 min just to get down the teleporter and walk off my front porch..... ridiculous... at any rate if they shut down 2d it may go quite a ways to stoping some of the scripting however it's not a "catch" all solution for the problem.. I'm sure there are still "sweatshop farms" in 3rd world countries that still pay quite poorly to have some poor citizen tied to a chair 18 hours a day chopping wood or killing the same monster day in day out eat sleep and drinking UO gold farming.... but that's neither here nor there.... the only way they could put an end to that is to start monitoring accounts that are running 24/7 ..... NO one in their right mind should be playing 24/7... If they had some way to monitor such behavior that would kill a bunch of scripters.... however there is a way around every situation..... those determined to cheat will find ways to do so whether or not they end the 2d program or not.....

KR is alright, except people are hard to identify imo. Also it is lacking options like the ability to make a "always run" macro, and support for the mouse scroll wheel to bind to macros (At least it won't work for mine :/).

I would quit hands down if that ever happened. KR just gives me a headache playing it.

Myself, I like KR. As a player returning after a ten year hiatus, I find the graphical interface very appealing and much needed in order to mount any competition with the other MMPG's out there. Unfortunately, it is true that this platform is a beast and does require a very good system to run on. It also has the problem of closing/shutting down at inconvenient times although it only happens maybe once for every six or seven hours of game play on average. Keeping the computer's registry clean seems to help with this a bit. Overall, I am really enjoying the past few months since I returned but I was, as you can imagine, quite surprised by all of the changes since I played on Great Lakes ten years ago when there were about four shards and Felucca was on the drawing board.

They will NEVER phase out 2d because it will be the end of UO. Most of us simply don't want to play KR or we would be. I will never play KR. If they phase out 2D then I'll phase UO out of my computer.

I don't play UO because of its graphics, although I do perfer its 2d graphics to its KR graphics. If I wanted to play a game based on graphics alone I would would be playing DAoC, WoW, or AoC. Actually, AoC looks very very good, but I am holding out still for WAR to come out. I will definately be trying WAR, but I will probably still be playing UO.

Trammel was on the drawing board. Felucca wasn't, it just didn't have the same name back then. Back before Trammel, we called it Britannia or Sosaria. When Trammel was introduced, that's when they renamed it to Felucca.

I personally will never try WAR due to the fact that i know how EA will treat it, they'll treat it like they treat UO, a cash cow and nothing more.
