ClassicUO Desktop Client

What is the current official stance on the ClassicUO Desktop Client? Is its usage still being policed, or has Broadsword decided to look the other way?

I have been a loyal classic client + UOA user from the beginning. I tried the ClassicUO web client a few months back and it wasn't for me, but now with my move to a 4K monitor I'm wondering whether it is time to try something different. Can I safely use ClassicUO x64 version without putting my account(s) at risk?

Turn it into an app, works the same as an app. Unless you wanted to use the cheating parts.

They only endorse the web version, but I run it on a 4K display with a larger window (and zoom!) and it looks great in 60fps

Ok, I guess I might have to give the web client another shot.

I was thinking maybe the desktop client was in a gray area where it is "officially" not allowed, but not really enforced. No I'm not looking for any cheating features (hell, I barely even play), but I just much prefer a dedicated desktop client to any web version. When I tried the web client shortly after release, I had a lot of problems with it, but hopefully it has improved since then.

I'm normally not a fan of such web clients either (and I'm a web developer) but it is pretty amazing. I will say that when I run it, it's the only tab/window I have running under Chrome. It runs great on my MacBook Air and on my kids' Macs and barely uses any CPU (although I try to mostly play on my desktop PC) and it even runs well on my ultraportable laptop (which has a low-voltage CPU).

I've heard good things about the web client but haven't switched over from CC+UOA since I've kind of developed muscle memory with that combo. I do think it might have some quality of life upgrades like being able to switch from regular backpack to tile version. Personally I'm just not sure what the desktop version of ClassicUO would have that web wouldn't outside of ability to run scripts. As always buyer beware on non-sanctioned things, but if the web-version is a complete no-go for you it doesn't appear that many people are actioned for using 3rd party programs (otherwise PvP would be almost completely gone).

Being a browser client, I'm wondering if it can work on devices other than a PC or Mac etc. Tablets?

What browser works best?
Chrome seems the obvious choice, and it's been fine on my PC and Mac, and Edge on PC as well (Edge shares a codebase with Chrome/Chromium).

The ClassicUO site mentions "Chrome-like" browsers as a requirement.

In theory, yes. Actually getting it to work is a different matter.
When it first launched, I was able to log into a character on my phone, but it kinda broke after that. I logged in, that was it. Now when I try on a phone I get to "loading maps", then all the prompts just vanish. You would probably have better luck on a tablet than a phone to be fair. I don't own a tablet, so I can say how different the performance is.

I tried it on a Chromebook, basically a glorified tablet, it was quite buggy. It was also hit or miss in terms of even getting it to start, error codes etc. I'd like to give it a better look, it's just been very unreliable when I've tried it before. I'll have to give it another go.

Thanks, don't like chrome, but I'll give it a try.

I tried it on my Samsung Galaxy tablet and it was an absolute mess. So I think it "may" work on certain tablets, but YMMV.

Reading around here and elsewhere, it sounds like it may be an issue with how the client files are downloaded and stored (the web client is running off of the desktop files that have been downloaded). Different OSes and/or browsers do it different ways. I also wonder if some extensions are interfering.
