Salvage Station

I know this might sound dumb, but, how is this supposed to work? I recently obtained one and I can not seem to figure out how it would work. Does it need to be near a forge and anvil? I tried to drop something into it and it would only go into the container at the end of the station, still in the same form as when I put it in. I tried dropping it on top of the station, but that didn't work either. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Well dunno about CC but in EC you click the box thats attached to it, and you get a menu to salvage cloth, metal or all, just FYI you must own the house to use it, ya i wasted vet pick on it because i didnt know that, my smithy works out of a house im co owned to

In CC you also click the box to get a context menu similar to what Whitewolf said. You don't have to have the station near a forge or anvil to use it. It's best to use the station on your miner for weapons/armor and tailor for cloth items. (see here) Also bone armor isn't salvageable.

Does this mean the "operator" must be a smith or tailor to drop the items in?
I think it just means (like with the salvage bags) the higher your mining or tailoring, the more resource you get back. But haven't tested one myself.

Never knew the level of unraveler mattered. I guess it was always a tailor or smith that did so.

Anyone can drop the items in, but I would use a miner/tailor to do the actual salvaging. Sometimes I let a lot accumulate before I salvage.
