I cannot fathom just how one runs out of a digital good...

A few years ago an EA employee mentioned on here that when they say "out of codes" what they actually mean is too many codes were stolen by people using random number generators to farm them, and they can no longer guarantee the code you buy won't already have been used before you bought it. So they wipe out the system that makes the codes and restart it again with a fresh set that haven't been tampered with.

No idea if that's accurate, but it makes more sense than running out of a digital item.
