Skill gains

It seems to be taking me forever to get gains, just talking to GM for mysticism and magery. I don't remember it taking so long. I tried a tamer and after an hour and 50 to 51.1, I deleted the tamer. Is this their way of pushing advanced character tokens? Are those still a thing?

Skill gains for anything except meditation and focus have always been slow IMO.

The title under my name tells you how I feel about skilling. Mythic tokens FTW.

I have one character per account that I train skills on. That character is stripped of everything. What ever skill I want to train I train it on that char and stone it over. Seems to gain much faster that way. I mean I GM'd Spellweaving in like 18 hours or so. Try GM'ing SW on a 500-600 skill point character and it's gonna take ya a lot longer than that.

Magery can be gained pretty quickly using fast Magery Weps. You can use a -29 Mage Wep Dagger/Kryss on Gregorio to get Magery up into the 70s/80s, then use a -29 Mage Wep 100% Poison Dagger/Kryss to get Magery up to 120 from attacking a pet Wolf Spider. Here's a Gargish version of my Training Weapon for that (i use this alongside a +DEX/+Stam/+HCI suit).

For skills like Mysticism/SW/Necro, then you can use Necro's Wraith Form in the Acid Slug Pit of the Underworld for basically infinite mana. Spam your training spell until you're low on Mana, then hit the Acid Slugs with an AoE spell or two, and you're back to full mana through Wraith Form's Mana Drain, then spam training spell again (is even easier if you're training spell is an AoE damage spell). Rinse and repeat.

@Anon McDougle they are going to open up a new store for NL and sell mythic skill tokens and accelerated gain tokens to gm all skills along with an 8th char slot to transfer back to your home shard :stir:

Taming is rather easy and straightforward. If you're having problems with skill gains you aren't taming the correct critters.

Grit and determination are clearly traits that have gone by the wayside.

There are a couple skills that take a crazy amount of time, but then there are others that are super easy to raise if you know what you are doing. There are a bunch of guides out there telling you what to fight at what level, what to make, cook, mine....ect.

Just have to decide, am I gonna work these skills from scratch or buy the token? My first tamer, was all organic and the old school click to tame. Second tamer used masteries and the third one, Mythic Token.

I will say I also just created a new Dexer character that I will be leveling old school style. Gonna earn every single 0.1.

Training skills for semi-established players isn't really that hard these days IMO depending on what shard you play due to equipment (bumping stats through the roof) and availability of blue/pink scrolls & primers. Having access to a treasure hunter makes it very easy to achieve this.

From there you just need to make sure you are training the right thing (ie use a ball of knowledge to stay around optimal difficulty). I've taken many skills from 0 to 120 in less than 24 hours by doing something like this:
  1. Ensure total skill points are as low as possible - meaning if you training something like eval int in town then the only skill you really need is meditation (for when you cast a spell) and everything else can be 0. You will 100% gain faster on a toon with under 200skill points vs one with 600+ skill points.
  2. Buy skill from 0 up to 30-40 using an NPC.
  3. Start using blue scrolls to bump skill gains from .1 to anything between .2-.5 for each gain. These last 15min each. You can easily get from 40 up to 50-60 with your first one. Goal is to get to 70-80 using blues and for most skills this only takes a couple of scrolls. Depending on how much time you have this might be able to just be worked without blues (save them for later if you don't have many).
  4. Once around 80 this is kind of limbo depending on the skill. For the easier ones I can proc skills gains faster (ie evalint) I'll use a couple more blue scrolls. If you have a friend (or second account) go use the satyr trick in twisted weald. If it's a more of a PITA skill, this is where I'd see what I could get in pink scrolls and try to bump it to 90 skill.
  5. Once at 90 skills, many skills have a mastery you can toggle that will take you to 120 just by sitting in one spot and using some mana. This is where I'd have saved the blue scrolls if I didn't have access to many of them and get the harder gains here.
Of course this method would vary based on what skill you are looking to build and how accessible blue/pink scrolls are. If you are a brand new player first time in UO this is not a method for you because you likely won't have the gold to get here right away...that said I also think a brand new player should be playing UO initially to learn the game so putting in the work is worth understanding how things work. For someone like me though that has trained evalint no less than 10 different times, I'm willing to pay the gold I've made playing to speed things up.

No. There is no change in taming gaining. Taming has been the slowest to gain always. That is without advanced character token. The toke is not too expensive. Its a very smart way to do the taming. It is cheap. As someone said $15/hour wages at McDonald's, so for 1 hour work or so in RL, you save at least 10-20 hours mind-numbingly boring taming gaining. So for taming it is Token. Then after you easily get the character to 90 taming I believe, you can use taming mastery gaining, and things go up from there. Still slow, but not dead slow, it will still take time but not 30-50 hours to get to 120, if you want the real 120 for the better return on masteries.
I mostly use my vampire/samurai for serious content and the treasures events. I use taming for the intrigue and challenge, and the idea of dealing with different pets and what they do. Taming is a play style you learn to love and hate lol, mostly love. I would not give up yet, use some alacrities and pinks if you get them, may help and use the power hour and also you gain taming when your pet is using masteries etc. This and all Kevin said. GL.

I was using the skill thing to tell me what gain chances I had. I had a Legendary tamer back in the day before you could use mastery to get from 90. It did not take an hour on a brand new character to get 1.1 total gains. I am 20 years older and no longer have the freedom of time that I did when I was younger so I take offense at your comment about grit and determination. Clearly so has politeness and helpfulness in your case.

Thank you to the others that have posted, I will look into the tokens to save me time and frustration.
