Runes To Hidden Locations

One of the things I love about UO are the legacy runes to places that I have no idea how they were obtained. Places like inside the Trinsic walls (every wall not just a few), beneath the bone room in Deciet, the top of the mountain in T2A, the "basement" areas of several dungeons that you cannot access without the rune. These places are not possible to access normally & many of them cannot even been seen as you play the game (below bone room, fire dungeon "basement" under the daemons). I have always been curious. I mean, how the hell can anyone mark a rune to the to something that cannot be seen or to the top of a mountain way above the height that any player can reach or even see. So, how did these runes get made?

If I remember correctly, there is a way to use a combination of gate travel and energy fields that allows you to move on the “z-axis” of the game. Not sure if this still works or not.

Well frick. You can no longer case energy field or wall of stone in a town. Man they have talken the fun out of this game with soooooo many damned restrictions. There are several walls in cities without runes I want to get into.

i have a rune to a hidden room inside the walls in the middle of britian and i figured out to get inside it requires standing on a specific rock and having ur circle of transparency at 100 so u can see floor tiles inside the room then teleporting in literally thro the wall. I havent figured out the trinsic ones but i would its something along the same lines

I have not figured out how to teleport through the wall because of the "target cannot be seen" message. It does not work like targeting a roof you "cannot see" then walking under it & teleporting using last target.

I know that Gate+Wall of Force still works for getting to some roofs (like the buildings in the cemetaries.

In the beginning of UO there was a program that allowed players to enter coordinates and teleport to that location, provided it was not blocked. This resulted in players gaining access to many restricted locations & called attention to Devs. Program functionality was blocked soon after. Some of the rarest runes of this kind were handed down over +20yrs to friends as their original owners quit the game. Very few remain.

Some runes resulted from early telestorming. Players found themselves moved to bizarre locations & marked. Other runes were results of game glitches such as the 1st Blackrock/Armageddon spell event. At this events release, a player w mined blackrock could say the spell w 1 of several outcomes (blowing urself up entirely being one). Another possible outcome was being blown backwards (opposite from one’s facing direction) randomly between 6-12 spaces. If a player positioned themselves w their back to a wall, mountain, water, or any other impasse... the mechanic would relocate them to the nearest available spot up to roughly 15 tiles away. This was caught by Devs & removed in abt 7-10 days when players started posting abt how others were using this to enter private keeps & castles by blowing themselves thru walls on thief chars to stealing items. Likewise, it was used w/o nefarious intent to access areas & mark runes. Few of these runes remain as most players were unaware of the mechanic & most that knew weren’t explorers but thieves thus never set out to use it for anything other than profit.

The e-field/stone wall gate mechanic was commonly known and frequently used by many resulting in most of the rare locations runes found today. The lesser found runes of this type are city locations as said spells were blocked in guardzones.

Some runes came from events where the EMs created areas and forgot to block marking or simply missed small locations created outside the larger main areas. Some areas, such as Pirates Cove, the EMs never intended to block so players could return & enjoy the work they’d done. Others runes are results of defunct quests/discontinued storylines and global events.

There are far to many ways to create such areas to list them all & the list would be inadequate if attempted. These are just a few off the top. I’d like to thank those gaming explorers that set off to find & mark such locations w no ill intent, simply to show someone was here and noticed.... and say “hey, that’s pretty cool”.

Thank you for responding. I do know there were many things the programmers neglected to block off or lock down in the early days. Water tiles & server birth rares are examples. But I often wondered if there was some program that allowed people to teleport into some of these hidden places. I do know there was a really bad hack when Samuria Empire was released that allowed people to literally walk through walls to get to the rares before anyone else could.

I was actively playing when the Blackrock/Armageddon thing was around. I never thought to try to use it to get into places like inside city walls. I wish I had.

I really do believe that if the location exists in UO, that it should be accessible to anyone with a little bit of work without having to resort to exploits. It saddens me that so many of the rare spots are now blocked off. Most of them did no harm that I know of - like the Despise cave. Years ago some developer put rocks in front of it so you cannot teleport in anymore - the old runes are blocked also. Many that are lost are the result of the *spits at the name* kingdom reborn re-tiling.

I also wish there were more places to *fall into* like the Buc's tunnels - or even places to climb up to. The old Ultima games had a lot more unique caves outside the dungeons than UO does.

I took Mesanna to that cave once and asked her about it... she went in there... and it's still not open so no idea...
