Not trying to derail your thread. What was their reasoning for killing KR and going with the EC?
Ah, what a tale.
See, Kingdom Reborn was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of UO in 2007. EA, in their typical fashion pushed it out
extremely early and it was at best beta quality at release. Because of this, it left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths, and the limited resources UO had at the time (which now look like almost unlimited in comparison) made it a slow and difficult process to fix it and improve the client.
Some of the artwork wasn't quite finished, and the performance of the client required a decent computer, since it uses the Gamebryo engine (The same one that at the time was famous for the Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and Civilization 4) which really wasn't suited for 2D/2.5D artwork, ending up requiring polygonal billboards to represent all mobiles. Unfortunately because of this, people with computers that were 5-8yrs old, which apparently was the majority of the UO population at the time, had issues playing the game at all.
Then there was the issue that seems to plague the vocal minority in UO -
any change is bad change. New graphics, new UI, scared them and they hated it. Regardless of the fact they patched in CC graphics and added a lot of classic client UI elements. What I suspect happened is that during the development of Stygian Abyss, which initially was to be for the KR client only (and begin converting UO to being non-tile based) they realized they didn't have the resources and decided to scrap it (KR actually worked with the closed SA development shard for some time, so I think this happened quite late).
However they knew they couldn't just go back to 2D, so hence why we have the abomination that is the EC now. With lower resolution graphics, and less features then what we had almost a decade ago. For example look at this image:
This is art for an elemental, at their actual size. While neither of them are
large, the EC artwork is pitiful, there is no detail or depth because it has been shrunk so far down. You can actually put KR graphics in the EC client, and most of them will work - you can get better looking mobiles, however I have been unable to get the terrain to work due to differences and alterations in its layout, which is unfortunate. In addition, the actual client is as buggy, and I've found more crash prone then KR ever was. Though I guess it isn't surprising considering that Mesanna is an avid Classic Client fan.
I may appear slightly angry about this, and I am - but only because I think UO is still one of the best MMOs out there, even today - yet we're stuck with either a supremely outdated client, or a client that looks like Frankenstein's monster. I need
Dermott of LS to come back me up, but he seems to have disappeared.
