*nods to CRAFTER, Powerful Ally, Ageless Stranger, Silent bob and more* In general chat this a.m., was reminded of;

Cow tipping.
7X gm characters being 'God like'.
A gm Smithy valorite plate suit meant you were filthy rich.
No house needed, camping did the trick.
Tents outside of Minoc if you wanted to camp in style.
Guard whacking at WBB.
Black holes from Britain bank server overload.
Remove nightsight items/spells to fully appreciate the gorgeous night lights of Britannia.

:thumbup1:

Did I miss anything?!

Server (down) wars! The un-saved period "back in the day" around when you are talking was 20-30minutes which meant lots of PKing and acting a fool (at Brit Graveyard).

Remember you could actually gate monsters if they walked into your gate as they chased you? I remember my friend would make the server wars more interesting by gating in dragons from Destard to help make things more of a challenge.... ahhhh the good ollll days!

I think permanent nightsight really did ruin some of the magic of UO for me. The game was just so vibrant when it got dark and the colored lights came out.

Here's a few more.
- had to res at a shrine if you were red
- being able to log out in someone else's house and loot it over and over again.
- keys for doors and no security
- the "bone wall" in deceit for training melee
- buying a new horse every time you died
- having to carry reagents...
- silver broadswords of vanquishing!
- stacking furs to climb over forge patio fences
- people playing and enjoying the game
- hop dragging hundreds of ore to the nearest forge 5 screens away

getting that sinking feeling in your stomach when the server _doesn't_ go down when it was supposed to...

Making Molotov cocktails... with an oilcloth and liqueur...
The invasion and swamp of Yew which had the plague beasts that would spit stuff at you which could follow you even if you went through a gate and would hit you randomly dead 5 min later at WBB... that was always fun...

When Liches could cast on you when you were in your house... hated that.

Going to get my armor repaired by PorkChopJesus at the smithy near the Brit Cemetary back when smiths would hang there...

It taking an entire guild to kill a dragon... such fun. (Getting my first ever dragons slayer bow and thinking I was all that only to find that it didn't even move the bar of a dragon in the slightest)...

Being on dial up and losing connection while training in Shame and logging back in to loot a pile of dead earth elementals that were at my characters feet...

Jerky boat movements that were terrible...

Being telestormed to some random location...

Gating entire hordes of creatures while using herding...

Making pigs squeal and sit.

Standing for hours on end at Ophdian Mound while training whatever skill it happened to be... generally barding or magery... with 2 or 3 dozen other people... and sometimes being the guinea pig who lured a huge mob of Ophidians down to the mound.

Didnt they ruin that by making it where the Ophidians could climb up the backside?

Kinda like the ruined the hidden shelf at Tera Keep we used to stand on and work archery and healing?

Being overjoyed that a friend gave me 30K gold, just like that. In those early days, 30K represented a fortune to me, and I was absolutely overwhelmed by his generosity.
This amount of cash, added to my own diligent savings, made it possible for me to buy a tiny house near our guild hall. I stayed there until I could move to something bigger in Trammel.

Working like mad to gather 1 mio gold to buy a castle deed so that we could found a new guild house on Trammel when the facet would go live.
We mined, chopped wood, submitted ourselves to dungeon runs, we worked like mad. In the end, we gathered as much as 3 Mio so that we could triple our chances of building a castle. We succeeded and were one of the proudest guilds on Drachenfels.

"pet fetch" -- and every pet would do that. I remember having a pet wolf carrying 4K hides.
"pet guard" and point to an object. Then when anyone touched that object (such as a door), you could kill him without getting a murder count
enticement, used to lure guards out of guard zone
spending all summer to skill-up a dragon to be 7xGM
Spending seven months getting skill up to grandmaster tamer
Hearing someone bragging that she'd killed an ettin with a butcher knife
You repair the object without weakening
Items in a house couldn't be locked down. They had to be on the floor so as not to decay.
Remember before colored ores? Some people smelted their Christmas coal to make black armor.
Remember before colored ores? The NPC smiths sold armor pieces, and you had to go around to all of them to get a plate suit all of the same color
Remember when monsters couldn't walk around objects on the ground, and people left bags of flour on the dungeon floors to trap monsters?
Remember when people placed houses on the island in the middle of the bottom level of Despise?
Remember when people placed ships in the dungeon rivers?
Remember when we were being told that the new "T2A" lands would have areas for placing houses?
Remember when wafflehats could permanently stop the spawn of nightmares in The Lost Lands by stabling one in Papua?
Remember when Runesabre complained that two thirds of all the animals were in the stables, and that's why the forests had no animals any more?
Remember when tamed/named animals were persistent, that is, you could tame an animal, name it, release it, and find it again weeks later?
Remember the per-pet-ual motion machine? You could tame seven animals and chain them together following each other around a small house, and they would continue doing that indefinitely.
Remember when slimes would reproduce when you hit one?
Remember "a jwilson"
Remember when pet white wyrms would loot their kills?
Remember when pet drakes could kill people, and a tamer could have any number of dragons or drakes in or out of the stables?
Remember "a wrist watch"
Remember stealing Santa's clothes right off of him?
Remember finding more and more Santa and his reindeer tableaus every day until towns were invaded by those?
Remember when all the PKs went from halberd to mage to archer to quarterstaff?
Remember people being followed by 11 NPC escorts at the same time?
Remember hiring Ocllo cashuals? Or training "resist" in that room in Wind?
Remember when NPCs listened and talked? No, really, they did.
Remember when you could trade items with NPCs?
Remember before elves and gargoyles?

Remember Crossroads of Britannia?

Remember standing at Brit Bank seeing people selling nightmares having 25 or more there... and anyone could ride one.

Wow, what a great list!

@Keven2002 Server wars were crazy! Folks would be doing anything and everything from drinking and stealing and murdering to dueling 1 vs 1 !

@grimiz And didn't we have to rez at the Chaos shrine in particular for a time? (When red.) I found an old key of mine recently that reminded me of getting my house key stolen and having some silver weapons looted! lol :D

@MalagAste I remember hanging at the Brit smithy, hoping to get my armor repaired, too! Back then it was the only way, if you hadn't worked that skill. Ingots were a fortune then!

@Leira of Asrai 8 x 8 ing, oh yeah! Crossing heaps of server lines on the boat too (had to re open everything)!o_O

@TheScoundrelRico Welcome back! House deeds, house keys...I remember I had a fake key in my pack that said 'You don't really think I'd be stupid enough to carry my real key?' or something to that effect. That said, I DID lose a house key to a thief, you can bet - early days, early days. hehe

@Tarragon Slayer/MZB 30K...that was a fortune. Now I see folks selling items for hundreds of M gold - plats. Some things do change.

@Laura_Gold Ships in dungeon rivers, right!! I think there may still be a sign or two left to warn folks that ships placed there may be deleted? Items in housing not decaying, good one! I remember being able to fill up your house with as much as you wanted; stack it high! Though you couldn't fit terribly much, it only stacked so high. 'a jwilson' hahahaha I nearly forgot! There's another thread here somewhere about that very thing, too; seems it was a poor review that lead to that particular named slime spawning. hehe

Cheers

Chaos v Order, you get a nice shield for spending 32 hours killing things, and then if you do anything naughty while having the shield equipped, it blows up and kills you. I remember having pet mongbats, and the good guys would attack the mongbats because they looked like mongbats following me, and then the shield would blow up and I would get to loot a good guy.

Remember when pancakeheads would barricade with freaking water barrels BEFORE you could bust them with an axe. This meant you had to empty them first which required you running around with a backpack FILLED with empty pitchers. I remember one incident of this where a pancakehead had covered the front of ice dungeon fel and the entire area around it with water barrels. I was on dial-up back then. I lagged out, lock up and lost conn. Of course when I logged back in the world was grey and I was dead. I was so mad. I paged a GM, and when they didn't come I kept on paging. Until a GM showed up to bust me for abuse of the paging system. He saw the barrels and said "Did you do this?!?!?" I replied NO THIS WHATI HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET YOU AWAY FROM YOUR DONUTS FOR, FOR THE LAST FEW HOURS! He started deleting them like a hoover vaccum and here comes the pancakeheads that placed them throwing a fit. The GM reappeared and said to the pancakeheads you ADMIT doing this? Say Bye-bye, and I guess he threw em in jail cause they went poof. I watched as the GM deleted the rest of them. Looking back you have to kinda admire their tenacity and dedication to being pancakeheads to place that many water barrels.

Spending your Saturday mining the wall in your fancy "small boat", only to get blocked in and fire balled to death by a bunch in underpants!

Being gated to wyvern island/lighthouse or terra keep, and they closed the gate...

Healing that warrior at the orc fort with the fancy coloured suit of plate on him, building his trust and then letting him goooooo. I still feel ashamed to this day :)

Steeling a pair of (these were the nuts) unblessed black sandals, sat there listening to the trade for nearly 30 minutes at moonglow bank going back and forth, breaking into a sweat and getting all nervous as I knew this was my time, my positioning was great!
Felt so bad after, I had to give them back. I didn't make the best thief.

I remember before there were actual guild mechanics, and people would use a name decoration for guild identification, e.g.
NOR Morwyn

I remember before there were vendors that you could attach to your house.
I remember having a pack animal I kept in my house for extra storage.
I remember when people had a half dozen sheep blocked in their houses, which they would shear for wool regularly.
I remember when half the houses were semi-abandoned because the key had been stolen, which meant the original owner couldn't reliably keep stuff there; and the thief who had a stolen copy of the key couldn't either
I remember "A Casiid dragon."

I remember when you actually took damage if you stood in a death vortex. ( i died once because of d.v. )
I remember getting whacked by a guildie in the guild house and then being looted by said guildie (i lost at the time a very nice bone luck suit) I can laugh at this now.
