Alacrity token....help me make the most of it :)

HI guys,

First post here, and I'm a newblet. Please forgive stupid questions or incorrect etiquette. All advice welcome!

I came back to UO at the weekend after more than 10 years away, and man, I have zero idea of what I am doing :p New account, so starting completely fresh.

I decided to buy the new player pack for the suit and the alacrity token, and so far have managed to GM:

- Swords
- Bushido
- Necro
- Parry
- Anatomy
- Tactics

Daft as it sounds, it was quite enjoyable to farm up these skills to 100, so I started wondering what else I can do with a 1 week speedy skill buff. So I got myself a soulstone, and am trying to decide what else I can max out then park on a spare toon for the future.

Currently working on magery, eval, resist, will probably add spirit speak.

I know some skills SUCK to level, so basically I am asking for tough skills that I can get through with the alacrity buff which will wear off on Sunday. I made a small list of Taming (already don't like it), Fishing (cba even getting started), and bard skills. Know nothing about crafting so didn't look at that yet - advice welcomed.

Got some suggestions for me? :)

Hello it was nice to meet you at the Europa Bank Meet! If I was you I would also get Mysticism and Spell Weaving for the mage character, they can be a bit slow at the end especially if you go over 100.
My mage char has Magery, Eval Int, Focus, Spell Weaving, Mysticism and Meditation all at 120 but obviously you need to work up to that over time! Good luck and have fun!

i would say taming.
while its a slog to work its worth it.

maybe start up a mule?
mining, tinkering, blacksmithing, tailoring..... imbuing if your feeling spicy.

I would do this. Get a spreadsheet out. Decide what characters you want. Make every character you want, soulstone off every single skill you currently have on your character onto them, and then just start rapid fire training up every skill you want as quickly as you can. That one week alacrity buff is amazing. You should also attempt to monetize it to get yourself some gold. I'm betting there are some players on your shard who might pay a hefty bit of coin to train with you in party. ;)

Lock-pick is a beast after 95. Detect hidden goes fast with the buff and if you're really up for the fun of leveling, begging and Remove Trap. Also Bard Skills can be a pain at times.

Hey again all,

Shri, it was nice to meet you too! That meeting there every evening is an incredible boon to newcomers....thank you for all the guidance :)

Looking at the suggestions, I wanted to maybe focus in on what is realistic and what I need to actually play. I might well indulge in another token down the line, but for this one I'll try to balance practicality.

Goals: 100 (or higher if I buy scrolls) in:

Melee:
- Swords - done (100)
- Parry - done (100)
- Tactics - done (100)
- Bushido - Close (90)
- Chivalry - May park (80)

Magic:
- Magery - close (90, will hit 100 this evening)
- Necro - done (100)
- Mysticism - starting (50)

(not bothering with meditation or focus, too easy to relevel when needed)

Other:
- Taming (I don't know if I can get this to 100+ by Friday evening when the token wears off)
- Music
- Provocation (same as taming)
- Resist

Maybe:
- Cartography - will see how much time is left
- Lockpick - 95 and up will probably be through just play, not worried about alacrity at this point

Decided not to go with crafting at this time, until I understand it better. I'll be starting on imbuing just as I play by throwing stuff to an unraveller mule.

That should give me a good choice of three effective playstyles, I hope. Mage, Tamer, Sampire/Paladin.

I'll probably miss half of these but this is the ambition anyhow :) Am I missing anything really obvious?

Yes concentrate on the things that are generally thought of as slow at first. Taming and bard skills can be woefully slow, resist spells I always found very slow, but I don't think it's as popular now in PvM as it used to be. I might be wrong though, I haven't had it for years!

UPDATE: I can't do it, I just can't. Taming is just too horrible, and tbh, I probably wouldn't know what to do with a pet if I had one.....meh.

Removing from the list, and replacing with Spellweaving, I think.

I know your pain, I have tried taming and got to Elder but I really didn't enjoy it at all, every time a pet died I felt like a failure...:(

And that's why you should use one for taming. With the new masteries you only need to train taming or bard skills up to 90. After that you can train them up using the mastery spells. Start a new character with 50 taming and you only need to gain 40.0. It sucks, but worth it.

I vote for taming also. It is extremely slow and takes a huge dedication to gain. Its your one and only chance to avoid the pain of training it like the rest of us did. Just what Maxims said above. You will not regret it later..

No you have to do the taming but only to 90.

Tame the polar bears up to like 75 and then switch to great harts in the healer grove in ilsh. You can have them attack the healers and then new ones spawn.

After 90 you can simply use the taming mastery to get to 120 with a heavy object on your space bar by recasting combat training. I did it just a few days. Its the 70-90 that is slow and painful because there is no way besides taming pets.

There is one way.... though it requires loads of gold... that's buying pinks... I don't really recommend that method though.

IMO the very best way to get to 90 is with a Mythic token... boom done.

Definitely the quickest method but it requires dollars.

I absolutely love the heavy item on the spacebar "method"....lol
The joy of a work from home job and two monitors. One monitor gaining taming while I work on the other.

Of course the Dev team could avoid this by making taming actually fun to gain. Here are the ways:

* Everytime you command a pet you have a chance to gain taming.
* Everytime your pet kills a monster with more starting HP than its own you gain .1.
* Everytime your pet is trained up a level you gain 1.0 in taming.
* If your pet helps damage a peerless or spawn boss you gain 1.0 taming when it dies

That would encourage you to PLAY the game. Instead you have to do stupid things to gain taming so you can play the tamer which then equates to commanding pets around. Having to TAME like 6,000 animals is not very fun. At all. There is no gold in it and after 50 you are bored to tears. Plus there is the 6-8 second delay for each attempt making it a grind.

I can GM Lore in like 2 days while at the same time my taming goes from 50 to 60. Duh.

The skills should be fun to gain.

Macing? Get up to 90, get a whirlwind weapon and do champ spawns. FUN!
Necro? Get some jewelry up to 80 or 90 and go do champ spawns. FUN!
T-Hunter? Dig up lower level boxes for gains and skill. FUN!

Crafting? Make 1 million items to GM. And by the way - no one buys the items you make. Bods - semi interesting although you can't complete most of them (colored) until you are near GM level.
Scribe? Make a bazillion scrolls. Not fun.
Taming - Tame a billion pets and release kill. Not fun.

You get the idea. Make the skills enjoyable to gain and it feels like a fun game. Make them 100% repetitive with zero gains and it makes you want to cheat or at least mash down your spacebar with a simple macro while you work.

Agree! There are many skills you can gain in Khaldun. Get in on it.

Taming if you turn them in to the zoo you get stupid rewards no one really wants... with an armor set no one cares for... etc... they need better rewards and to add more pets to the zoo that you can turn in... including Greater Dragons which ought to be worth a heck of a lot more points...

But yes you are right Taming should raise with good deeds like killing major bosses and such. 5.0 points if you use a pet while killing Paroximus? LOL

Guys, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone :)

Awesome advice and guidance here, and for sure I learned a few things! I also made a couple of decisions...

Taming is not going to be for me unless I buy a mythic token at some point. I might. I don;t mind buying sovs to support the game. We'll see how it goes.

A magey-thing that can handle spawns in group or solo will be my first goal. With the exception of Mysticism and SW, I am in a good place here except for gear. I'll figure that out next.

I am certainly going to make a crafter....it's not going to happen under Alacrity, but I can see I am missing out on a major aspect of the game.

Wanted to thank you all for the time you spent replying and the decisions it helped me make.

See you in Trammel! (not brave enough for Fel yet!)

If you got the gold you can buy a taming 3 primer (couple mill on ATL) or go to a champ spawn and pray one drops and once at 85? (I forget) you can spam that to gain taming easily.

Also depends what shard play on and time of day you may never run across someone else while in Fel.

Hi Syncros, I looked at that. It's 90 skill, and that's pretty much exactly my plan. If (IF!) I get a mythic, I'll buy the primer, get the 90 tamer skill immediately, and take it from there.

The Primer 3s on Atlantic are currently 50-60m though. A number were going yesterday, and they were being bought at 59m. Vendor search showed 62m and up.

I'll be playing mostly on Europa though, so I am hoping that the community will allow me to be part of some spawn parties and maybe I'll get lucky :)
