so ive been picking away at the merchant quests for the last year.
when i get some down time i do a couple.
trying to hit the 150 mark.

but i dread..... DREAD doing any of them that require me taking a boat out.
what the heck spell do the sea critters cast that one hit kills a 120 resist mage wearing a all 70 suit with 140HP?

because i want that spell!

bloody brutal!
Deep Sea Serpents and Krakens.
i know they get a boost because im 6x120 - but one hit killing?
really?
brutal!

like i understand that they are scaled up to match your skill level but you have to be able to at least take a hit to fight them!
when they spawn and insta kill you where is the fun in that?

this REALLY takes away from the quest.

my last year doing merchant quests.
do a couple, get a boat one, go do a boat one, die, get ticked off and dont do any for a month.
get bored, go do a couple merchant quests, get a boat one, die, dont do any for a month or 2.
get bored.... (see a pattern here?)
one hit killing = not fun = people dont wanna do it!

When I do them I usually take my tamer... If I get an order that's overseas I take a GD with me and make the voyage invised..... otherwise yes I would die in .2 seconds. A tad Over Powered if you ask me but what do you do? For a long time I would just ditch the quests that were overseas... but yeah... GD for the win I guess.

I use to just sail away from them - never fought them again after the first time. I would either hide or take control of the boat and sail around them. Now, I just use the moongates for any that need over seas travel. If the cities are both accessible over land routes, I run and don't use the moongates.

Use a Tokuno boat, or any of the larger newer ones. I find it easiest for me to stand at the stern, hand the pilot a world map I plotted off to get me close to destination. If you are a weapon user, disarm so the autodefend doesnt make you attack/reveal. Then hide and stay hidden. I find they like to spawn close to where you are, so if you are in the back of the boat they are less likely to block movement. Since it was said that killing the raiders had no effect on the reward for you, I quit killing the ocean ones.

If you are talking about the trade requests, why are you using a ship?

I found, to my surprise, that you can use the public moongate system to get from point to point. You just can't cast your own, or use the gates by others (no teleporters, no crystal balls, no event gates, not even the skara boat crossing!).

I've delivered from Britain to Jhelom and Skara Brae a lot, purely on foot. (even managed to get venerated in Britain along the way, since I'm mayor on LA, and I wanted to make sure the trade deals were funded for my entire term in office).

I believe that if you use a moongate to travel during one of the trade quests, you will not receive one of the "rare" rewards. Resources only.

ya, as soon as you hit a moongate you loose any chance of getting any of the books or signs.

Nor would you get a "chance" to get that Slim's veil with FC1 if you are turning them over to Slim.
But alas, it is not exactly like that you would get it from him anyway even if you sail to him. The drop chance is so infinitesimal that I don't think more than 5 dropped since they introduced the trade quests.
It is ridiculous. :|

And the resources are diminished in their amount.

All that is true about the resources and signs but you still get pinks using moongates - which is the main reason I run them.

As I was dealing with family issues and not playing enough to actually learn the system when it was introduced, I never even had a clue there were rare drops. In fact, I've never seen anything detailing drops other than resources and pinks (and I do them for pinks and for funding my city's trade deal).

For ones I can get to overland, such as Yew, Trinsic, Vesper and Minoc, before ML limited you to one escort, period, I'd get one "for hire" escort in Trinsic, and rescue up to 4 more on Barrier Island from the bandits, and go overland through Britain to Cove, Minoc and Vesper, and get all my compassion gains on one long trip. I was even called a liar after posting screencaps of me doing it. So, delivering those isn't an issue, unless you specifically have to sail to get the special stuff.

Yeah, did about 800 slim-tour via boat. Tons of pinks, tons of crap, some deco, no veil...
