Effective Living on a Shard Without a House

How do you live on a shard when you don't own a house?

I made a newbie mistake dropping a bag trying to move stuff from one character to another (although it was behind a wall and required circle of transparency to see it, it was at a high-traffic area). And I got to thinking if there was a better way.

Without a house, transferring stuff is harder, and it's not possible to do the items that require a lot of storage. For instance, trying to do the BOD system requires storage for the BODs plus all the resources.

Who lives on a shard without a home? What kind of characters do you play, and what other tips do you have?

  • Use a boat.
  • Ask a friend to hold stuff.
  • Use another account.

When I made my first characters at Old Haven I had this problem, I didn't get a house until I had been playing well over a year and it was a tiny 7X7 shared with my husband. I used to drop a bag into a corner of the inn room at Haven and then log another character in and pick it up. I never lost a single bag and there were a lot of other people around back then. It really wasn't until a while after AoS that we got any decent sized houses. :p

I spent a year playing on Catskills a while ago. I had 3 Tokuno boats anchored by Jhelom bank and lived in the inn there. When I returned to Europa I put the contents of the boats into beetles, using commodity deeds for heavy resources and dry docked them. I logged out sitting on the beetles. They're all there should I wish to return.

I like these ideas. Of course, 15 years ago it was easier to live out of a bank box because there weren't so many activities that required storage.

Boats require regular refreshing, don't they?

What do you do about items that require lockdowns, like soulstones?

When I have to transfer stuff from char to char, I use another account and a packer. That packer is friended to all the other char's so all I had to do is open the packer bag remove the items for that char. Back before you could open multi game windows I would make sure to log that char outside the Inn, log in on the char with packer tell the packer that char outside the inn was a friend, log out, after telling the packer to "ALL STAY" log in on the other account remove items from the packer, move inside to the Inn, log out ,log in new char move outside to the packer again and then log in on owner of packer.

Ideally a brit ship as you can place and anvil and forge on it and it has a big cargo hold. But they are expensive. Personally I would just buy one from the store and not waste money on the Captains Bundle. The pilots wheel really is just a sextant and the dyes well if you want perm ship paint I guess they are worthwhile.

I always start a new character on a new shard with 50 Imbue and 49 inscription and buy up eval, med, mage and mystic. second toon I do Mining, BS, arms lore, tailor, carpentry, fletch and tinker. With anything left over in mage. 3rd toon I go with a archer/melee back up With parry, bushi, chiv, tactics and LJ. These 3 base types support each other without the need for soul stones.

If I am remembering right each toon on the account can have a ship in the water. That equates to potentially 875 boat storage plus the bank. Keep a eye on the ships decay and try to refresh them if not every day every couple of days.

Transfers 5 packies, the bank and the back pack. If using shields bank and back pack.

And that is how I play a sea faring hobo on shards I don't want to put a house on.

Soulstones can be in your backpack and be used.

Soulstones stay in the bank, unless you're using them, when they're in your back pack. Ships do need to be refreshed, but if you're playing regularly you start each session by hopping from boat to boat. Job done. Crafting, borrow the NPC's forges, anvils, oven etc. crystal portals, take a wander around Luna and mark runes to houses with public ones.

Probably goes without saying, but make sure you've also purchased all the expansions/upgrades to maximize each character's bank storage to 175 items.

I have only been transferring complete characters to other shards from Great Lakes.

They are sent with minimal items. If I need more storage i use a new character.

No need to struggle and start completely over when I can just eat 60 mil and transfer one.

It doesn't go without saying. :)

I have the 7th character / +20% housing, but that only brings me to 125*1.2=150.

Just to clarify - what should be the maximum storage bonus percentage that shows up on your house sign?

Maximum is 60%
That's 20% from ML, 20% purchased (either seperately or as a package with 7th character), 20% from High Seas

This is a great post and discussion, especially how to live out of boats. So each character can have boat in the water? And all characters on that account can access each of the boats on that account? I really never thought about this option. I guess that leaves hauling ingredients to a public soul forge every time you want to imbue something as the biggest hassle, eh?
