Casting Focus with Parry

There has been quite a few discussions as of late pertaining to this topic. Now, I have never used CF in a parry temp but others that have state that either; it works at intended in conjunction with parry OR that if you have above 100 parry it negates CF entirely.

Can either of you shed some light on this?

I don't use a lot of casting focus but it works fine at 120 parry when it does go off.

Even with a 12% cap its low odds.

Well, I might have to finally break down and make a parry/scribe then I absolutely hate casting focus, never should've been part of UO imo.

It's a fun template, although I could do without the CF as well (8%. FML.)

tbh, CF's ok for pvm, but if you're in a situation there where you need to worry about not fizzling, just run like hell and cast Protection.

I suppose it's also somewhat helpful for someone inexperienced with pvp, but it still wouldn't do anything in the long run. The cap is what, 12% with everything? The CF user will still fizzle WAY more often than not, and unless it kicks in on a key spell (cure/archcure or spell plague), it does more harm than good, even with the lack of experience.

That said, leaving things in the hands of the RNG is no bueno.

What is your temp? Anat/parry, wrestle/parry?

I just put together a suit and had 2 ppl blast me with arrows while I was spamming spells and it didn't proc once in 15min. I had the cap of 12% +scribe

120mage 120eval 120resist 120wrestle 100inscribe 100parry 40medit
stats when buffed 143/113/180 +26MR (Yes, I know this is overkill but w/ legendary mage armor it all adds up)
I went high on the MR since I could only fit 40med
I went high on the dex/stam so I would be evil omen/curse proof for my parry stat.
My suit is 100% corpse proof.
Use a spell channeling, soul charge, 15%dci, reactive para shield.
I'm also using the alchemical bracers. The lightning doesn't proc often but
it sure is funny when it does. It surprises the hell outta folks  .

Being a focused mage gets me +10sdi capping at 40% in PvP.
Im capped at 17% CF. 12% normally then the added +5% from GM inscribe.
My FC seems to proc well. I definitely see it hit but as for how much, I couldn't honestly say.
When I'm fighting:twak:, I usually don't watch the bottom left corner of my screen to check CF proc :eyes:.

This is a fun template to play:thumbsup:. Most dexers run or die. Exception being noxers that will stick
around long enough hoping the nox will throw u off. With EP and casting focus, you'll just
cure/heal then they run off cursing you:cursing:.

Maybe you had horribad luck on CF proc? Maybe your character is bugged?
Dunno, but I can say mine seems to work fine;).

CF Cap is 12% from items, + 5% from GM Scribe (may have been increased to 10%), and I think up to 4% from bard masteries.
My parry mage works just fine with it. Though I think for PvM there are better properties to go with. For PvP at 17% thats a 1 in 6 chance to proc, which provides a little bit of forgiveness to mages for spell timing.
It doesnt save you from having to time your spells properly, but when you get hit .25 secs before your spell would finish and it goes off, you definitely feel its worth.

I also use a resonant shield with kinetic resonance. The dci isnt as good as some items, but its another chance to not be interrupted.

CF won't save you from interruption if you get hit above 20 damage (I think is the interrupt threshold). But thats quite enough for you to occasionally shrug off poison/bleed ticks, lightning, fireball, velocity, and magic arrow procs/hits and keep casting.

Is there any way you can link me to whatever it was that you discovered the above statement? I have never read about a threshold...

I had no idea there was a 20 DMG threshold

The GM Scribe bonus is still 5%. CF plus Bard Mastery Caps at 12%. As stated above total cap is 17%. The damage thresholds for CF are the following: Player damage above 28 interrupts and monster damage above 33 interrupts.

I wish there was somewhere where stuff like this was officially documented.

Like all the new masteries, all the descriptions are vague and you have to go make your own judgment. I'd love to see the formulas for things, like disarm block chance and shield bash damage as an example.

PS, are you playing somewhere logrus? I always admired the Dev that pvped :), gave you a better feel for how things worked and their balance

Thank you sir for the accurate info!.

@Cetric
I get in every now and again on ATL. Mostly tied up with working on Shards Online so its quite a bit less than I used to play. On the plus I'm trying to work in the game balance on SO from the beginning, so it avoids a few pitfalls. Right now our PvP is pretty balanced though the latest spell set may be slightly OP :D

Since that stuff is pretty unchanged, you'd probably find it on the original threads when the new properties were introduced (I think SA or HS) and on TC. Of course that would be ancient now if its still on this site at all.

In the original patch notes when the property was put in. I just didnt remember the values that I had coded but lucky enough @Bleak was able to set the info straight.

Not sure about the question you got there.
Parry is simply a mechanic where you essentially avoid getting hit.
Casting Focus doesn't negate or avoid the hit, but if proc'd prevents the hit from interrupting your casting.

They work differently and independent of each other so having both does work. Parry doesnt negate CF.

Does it work, yes, Is it worth it? That is subjective to the person using it.

The question is whether the chance for it to proc is worth it to you investing the skill and item properties for, as a purely defensive and random mechanic.
On my parry scribe mages, -I- find it to be worth it.
On my parry nox mages,, I don't use it as much.
