What has been happening? (Story/lore)

I'm considering returning to this game with the release of Time of Legends. I always read the fiction posted on the official site, but I'm curious as to what has been happening in-game recently with these events? I'm trying to keep up with the calendar but it seems to post all shards as well as global events.

So globally, how is the world progressing? What are these "time gate" events? The last time I was in touch with the game was when Lord British paid us a visit. And finally, is there a website where I can keep up with the in-game story lines?

Long story short the last couple months have been spent accumulating 4 gems. They used these gems to open a portal that will most likely be used to reach the new lands.... That's a short version of what's going on

I feel expansion and major lore events should be added into the game as scripted quests that can be done at any time. One shot EM events that most people that work miss are not a good way to do expansion lore. I haven't been able to make it to any events and don't feel invested in the expansion lore or really even care at this point.
It's just new farming areas to me.

It is unfortunate when you miss out. EVE Online has made a habit of making in-world videos of events as news broadcasts for those who can't or choose not to attend. It's a tough thing to address because scripted events can detract from the open world itself.

The Sapphire Eye of Dungeon Doom from the Black Dragon in Malas

The Lesser Wolfgang Ruby from the crypts of the Lost Kings of Akalabeth in Felucca

The Emerald of the Rondorin Empire from the waters of Tokuno

And the Despair Diamond of Ilshenar from Beatrix in Shamino's castle in Ilshenar

Then we learned the Time Gate spell from the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, and Hawkwind the Time Lord used the 4 gems to cast the spell and summon the Time Gate to the Valley of Eodon

Incredible. Starting to wish I stopped having such an off/on relationship with this game.
