Am weighing up a return, pros and cons. Top ten reasons!
Here's one:
Miss Echo on Oceania (she's a perfect example of why I EVER played!) AKA The kindness of strangers. Now I can cast spells without too much fear, as have been gifted a lrc suit!
10. The Kindness of Strangers

Care to add to the list?
Cheers,
Conny

This game is like no other. Played a few mmo's nothing is like this game.
9. Uniqueness. Pro.
Devs actually read these forums, and sometimes respond! Something I have also never seen in any other games.
8. Staff give a crap :). Pro.
The events are a lot of fun, havent really seen one time events, run by a storyteller(em, dungeonmaster etc)in any other games
7. Awesome people- ran events. Pro.
Variety of monsters/lands. 6 weeks into wow I had been pretty much everywhere, and seen pretty much every creature, and all its re-skins.
6. Lots of stuff to look at. Pro.
5. Pirates. 'nuff said. Pro.
4. I can tame and control a DRAGON!?!?!?. Never done that in another game. Pro.
3. Trade runs - fun! Pro.

No more levels to worry about, no need to wonder if im level 10, how can i play with my mates at level 20 etc.
2. Skill based "levelling". Pro.
1. Amazing community (in game and out of game, like here!)

I also play on oceania, miss echo is my gulid leader, very generous and kind player, oceania is also pretty nice in general too :)
I have only been here about 6 weeks, and theres really nothing for me to complain about yet, so no cons from me, but someone else can answer that!

Where to start?
Houses and decor -I spend more time looking after my homes in UO than I do my own RL one!
Rares -not just the uber ones
Odd things to make and collect and seek - imprisoned dogs? squirrels in crystal?
Amazingly inventive and interesting fellow players - they never cease to amaze me
Weird and wonderful random spots in the wilderness - set up solely for players to build and make stories around
Communities - whether RP or otherwise
Herding and begging! Cooking and fishing! How delightfully random!
The loot - I still loot tiny amounts of gold, always pick up cooking materials, I would most likely miss an artifact and loot a suckling pig.
Pirates and pirating -
Currently - my battle chicken (I am completely obsessed with training it up ready for a player organised event - Thank you @Vor ) and I have just found the public gardens (sadly neglected - boo Europa!) in Magincia.
Towns with evolving histories, some with stories written by people who play there, Governors
Myriads of random oddities - training parrying versus herds of sheep anyone?
18 years of work by loads of different devs, often working in seemingly different directions
EMs
...
I am sure more will come to mind!

Only true sandbox MMO. Other games try to create sandbox but add massive amounts of limitations and static features.

Darkfall is the best example of this. The devs claim sandbox but with static housing and static player cities.

I can be a shopkeeper, a crafts person, I can design and build houses, I can roleplay, I can run events, I can attend events, I can do quests, I can even hunt or fight now and then :)
I can make friendships that have lasted for years....

IMO UO is what you make it. There is no set path, there is no course to follow, you are only limited by your own imagination and goals.

Now if you suck at imagination and rely on others to tell you everything to do and when to do it then perhaps this isn't your game... If you lack the ability to set goals and adjust them over time then this game is not for you... Period.

If you rely solely on others for your fun you will find yourself very bored and will not enjoy the game. Many guilds anymore don't have things going on all the time. UO is a marriage of times spent with friends/family and time spent on your own. Those who thrive at it enjoy all aspects of the game and form strong bonds with those who have similar likes and interests. Some are more creative than others...
