I think they make each release a bit FUBARed so we'll want to buy their next release praying that it's less SNAFUed than the past versions have been, a simple feature to motivate future sales. XP probably got some programmers fired or promoted sideways to prevent them from doing such nice work a second time and reducing future sales of the next version.XP was awesome. Simple and effective. I have Windows 8 I think it is on my laptop and it's a confusing mess. Looks like 10 is going to fix that but I'm gonna need to see it first. I'll put it on my laptop to check it out since it's already FUBARed.
I think the idea with not creating future Windows versions is to focus more on sales of software like Office Subscriptions, and taking a percentage of XBox Live (which works on Windows 10) and Store App sales as well as hardware. This is very similar to what Apple does, at least with the app store.I think they make each release a bit FUBARed so we'll want to buy their next release praying that it's less SNAFUed than the past versions have been, a simple feature to motivate future sales. They'll motivate us to pay them more money somehow in the future if their going to stick with Windows 10, probably a yearly fee.
Less may be. Many ECers have made clear they won't return to using the CC and are P.O.ed over the EC not being finished or even fixed. Some may have left the game. I'm sure the early polls on who used which client had been close to even and the latest ones show far more CCers. If ECers have left, speaking with their money, EA isn't listening.Seems nobody in this thread using EC.
After the experiences of Vista, WIN8, 8.1, and what I've been reading in the news that are not simply car salesman flavor articlesI'm seriously wary of WIN10. With years of support yet to go on WIN7 & 8.1, I think I'll wait on switching to 10. It could well be another Vista or WIN8.Tech note - you need to install some ancient directx libraries to run EC on Win10

If it is, it will be a really bad thing to happen. Microsoft has said this will be the last version of Windows to be made, after this, it will be just updating. After the experiences of Vista, WIN8, 8.1, and what I've been reading in the news that are not simply car salesman flavor articlesI'm seriously wary of WIN10. And why are they motivating us with the free offer to dive right into WIN10? This is Micro$oft showing out of character behavior.Just make sure you do it within a year of release so that your upgrade is free.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for. Not that I have issues now... except of course looting at EM events.Uh, ya, I think I said that up at the top of the thread, both clients work fine on Windows 10. I've been running Windows 10 Preview for the past month with the Enhanced Client. The performance is actually better than it was under Windows 7 64.
I guess I may anticipate problems then. I consider myself more Triassic than Jurassic, and still view Windows 8.1 as a foreign invader on my system.
Jurassics will most likely update to see if WIN 10 is better than what they are currently running and go back to the old software we were using if it isn't, like we did with the software that got us that name.
It is a screwy setup, it's what's on my laptop. A clear joke compared to the WIN7 that's running on my tower. They should have just gone back to XP as the base OS and gone to updating that as their final OS version, it was the least hassle OS they made.I guess I may anticipate problems then. But XP had it's own bugs and flaws... and weaknesses. It is a screwy setup, it's what's on my laptop. A clear joke compared to the WIN7 that's running on my tower. So true, and Window's is moving towards the internet cloud starting with the OneDrive setup we will have to sign up for and log into at least once a year to avoid losing our Microsoft login email account per that new user agreement they sent out. How much malware will Hackers have waiting for us when we log in? The Cloud has to be a major target for them. All that info, all those computers *having* to log in there and run into their malware waiting in ambush. A Hacker's dream. No matter what you build to protect your cheese the mice will always find their way in.
All I foresee are storm clouds with that requirement. Would someone who's ready to exit UO for good be better off with a Mac?So true, and Window's is moving towards the internet cloud starting with the OneDrive setup we will have to sign up for and log into at least once a year to avoid losing our Microsoft login email account per that new user agreement they sent out. Never owned a Mac, propriety hardware made them to expensive to upgrade. No idea if hackers go after them or not considering most computers are Windows systems. I think if I change OS, I'll go Linux, likely a lessor target for hackers but still works with the Window systems hardware. All I foresee are storm clouds with that requirement. I don't much care to watch or read much news. Most of it is crap anyway..... the smeg that passes for news anymore it's like seriously who the F cares??? And honestly the blitz media that stalks every celebrity is just insane. One would think stalking laws would allow some folk a bit of freaking privacy. You know with all the beef about HIPPA and all you'd think that a celebrity could get some relief. But they don't and WTF is with all this supposed "reality" TV that is more fictional than anything I mean seriously who cares if they are all a bunch of whack jobs??? Bunch of insanity if you ask me.Never owned a Mac, propriety hardware made them to expensive to upgrade. No idea if hackers go after them or not considering most computers are Windows systems. I've actually gotten to where I don't use my computers has much. To many advertisements load from webpages, precede most news videos, new news websites are just clickbait for ads and occasionally seriously slow my computers and require a system restore. The routine has gotten tiresome. *shrugs*
I prefer getting newspapers for my news, you don't have to wait through advertisements to read the news.
Just installed both, nice, these two actually work well unlike many add ons.As for the ad crap that blocks up most of the web I guess that's why I pretty much stick with Firefox and use "No Script" and "AdBlock Plus"... So I don't see 99.9% of that crap that I don't want.
Yes they are awesome. It certainly cuts out a lot of the junk on websites.Just installed both, nice, these two actually work well unlike many add ons.
Two must have add ons for sure.Yes they are awesome. It certainly cuts out a lot of the junk on websites.
It's possible I'm becoming more radically retro than you, my friend. I'm looking for a time-machine that will take me back to the 1950's.Never owned a Mac, propriety hardware made them to expensive to upgrade. If you wait til 2019, you'll have to pay full price for Windows 10.I have read that Microsoft intends to continue extended support for Windows 7 until January 14, 2020. I think I will consider seeing if I can opt. in for Windows 10 for my laptop, since I hardly use it and would like to be familiar with the new OS, but I think I might wait until 2019 before going Windows 10 crazy.
Looks like my Windows Vista would need an upgrade fee and a clean wipe. I don't think I will bother with that, but I will consider the April 11, 2007 extended support deadline. Maybe I ought to look into upgrading to Windows 7, although, truthfully, upgrading old systems seems to be a moot point, eh? Thus grows my closet graveyard of old PCs.
Aw, I knowIf you wait til 2019, you'll have to pay full price for Windows 10.
Yeah Hopefully we'll have some most excellent new technology out by then. I mean yea, it's only 4 years away but advances in chip design are always being reported on.Aw, I know
I'll probably build a new computer at that point (or by that point) though, so I'll want a fresh install anyhow.
Let's hope they get on Steam, let alone Hololens ;P but yes, that would be very awesomeYeah Hopefully we'll have some most excellent new technology out by then. I mean yea, it's only 4 years away but advances in chip design are always being reported on.
** On a slightly related topic ** can you imagine UO coming out with Hololens compatible content?
It would, I mean it wouldn't work for the majority of game play, but if you could have the Gumps appear to be off your screen, or ooo Containers floating off to the side etc.Let's hope they get on Steam, let alone Hololens ;P but yes, that would be very awesome
It's starting to sound like a bad install, or you need a driver for your motherboard that Windows 10 didn't pick up. I upgraded, myself and had no issues like this.I upgraded to Win10 yesterday, and now I cannot log in. The EC simply hangs, the CC at least tells me that it cannot communicate with UO. I've tried everything I can think of. I created custom rules in my firewall for the ports I found listed in some other thread. I tried turning my firewalls 100% off. Still seems unable to contact the login server.
This is not, however, the first program I seem to have had the same issue with. Chrome opened no problem, but seemingly had no internet connection prior to re-installing. IE doesn't work (only the new Edge browser), with the same issue as Chrome. My VPN connection doesn't seem to have a connection. My torrent client doesn't either.
This is pretty annoying.
Hmm. Motherboard driver. That's an interesting suggestion given that basically nothing that didn't come with windows has worked now that I really think about it. the thing is it seems that the only thing not working is the connection for these programs. this is what led me to think firewall but every setting I can find to turn it off I have. It's starting to sound like a bad install, or you need a driver for your motherboard that Windows 10 didn't pick up. I know I've had issues in the past with drivers, but if some things are able to connect and others not, it's less likely, I was thinking you couldn't connect to the internet at all with that machine. I know with Windows 10 just out, there is a catch up period for some hardware providers.Hmm. Motherboard driver. Did you run it as Administrator?I decided that I would uninstall and re-install. Now the patcher doesn't even start... at least before it would start and then tell me that it couldn't download some config file. Seems I am going in the wrong direction.
Oh dear god no!!!From what I gather with Win 10 you can run as many as you like all on the same screen with one another if your rig can handle that.
Hey now! I miss 2000. I knew how to do things. You whippersnappers and your upgrades! When I was your age we didnt have graphics, DirectX or accelerators. We had to draw animations frame by frame and flip the pages fast.I doubt the Jurassics will update.
They will stick with their Windows 2000/XP. It's so much better.
I doubt there will be a Service Pack, Microsoft has stated this will be the last version of "Windows" and from now on bug fixes etc. will be sent out as regular updates as they are created.I'm waiting until at least the Windows 10 Service Pack one fix-the-release-bugs gets issued. Seems to be the thing to do.
Kudos to all for sharing. And nice! Smaller memory footprint and better performance ?? You had me at hello. I have been holding back on playing with Windows 10, for concerns on drivers and software packages I need to use for studies (sometimes I do work on the computer I swear), but mostly for UO. I will be watching this thread with great interest *Palpatine cackle*.For anyone wondering, both clients work, as far as I can tell, without a hitch on Windows 10, including UO Assist and UO Cartographer.
For anyone running Windows 7 and later, I would strongly suggest you set aside your copy of Windows 10 and take the free upgrade if it is offered to you. The upgrade process is fairly painless, and most things just work. For those used to either Windows 7 or 8/8.1, navigating around Windows 10 shouldn't be too difficult.
I'm still on the preview (beta) version, and there is still a significant amount of polishing to be done, but I have noticed a slight improvement in performance over Windows 7 x64. For those on older hardware Windows 10 takes less space on your hard drive, once you clean up the update files, and has a smaller memory footprint. It should run better on older/slower hardware than either Windows 7 or 8/8.1 does.
But the major reason to upgrade, in my opinion, is I expect support for both Windows 7 and 8/8.1 to end sooner rather than later. My feeling is that Microsoft is making a real push to get everyone on the same page in terms of operating system versions - hence the free upgrades, something unprecedented in Microsoft's history. And this is a full featured free upgrade that will upgrade you to the version of Windows 10 that is equivalent to your current version (Home, Professional, etc.).
Well whatever they'll call it now. That first big bug squisher routine they do.I doubt there will be a Service Pack, Microsoft has stated this will be the last version of "Windows" and from now on bug fixes etc. will be sent out as regular updates as they are created.
