If I understand THP's post correctly. While he doesn't enjoy the events, he feels that the events are helping to keep people playing which keeps the game alive. Without the events people will farm more which will cause prices to drop. Less new content(events), more boredom, fewer players. So hats off to both the ems and devs for keeping the game alive.

The EM events are something I don't bother with due to too many flapping wings and multi-boxers, the events are just not fun.

From the sound of things the EM events have to exist or there will not be enough rare items to sell for tons of gold and the game will end because it's boring. So those people would farm items instead and drop the prices of those items (down within reach of more players?) and the game will end because it's boring not to sell things for tons of gold.

OP, there's more to this game than rares and goods to sell for tons of gold. I do neither of those things and find the game very entertaining because of all the other things that there are to do in this game that are so entertaining. Climb out of that game play niche your in and check out the rest of the game, there's a huge amount of things to do after 18 years of additions to this game and you'll quickly realize the loss of EM events and their pricy rares won't kill this game.

plenty of people "collect" weapons and armor, which was revitalized with the global "shame loot". theres always something to collect in UO, always something to spend your gold on, useful or not. The difference is the sytle of player the game would have. Yes, the lack of EM events (tho we've seen this before but when the game was at its height) would mariginalize a significant portion of players, some of which enjoy other aspects of the game, some of which would leave.

if youve checked the trade forums lately, the most desirable EM items dont really sell for much more than the most desireable armor / weapons. and nothing compared to some things in the game like castles (yes, i realize this is only on atlantic where castles sell for 3b on average)

From what I understand, the EM's are NOT required to have a drop...recently on Origin I haven't seen many off-sharders, just us Originals who care about our EM's story's which are AWESOME! (Of course the off-sharders come to the ToL events)

While the EM Items do support a very large part of the UO Community (Rares Traders) They also hinder the community as well. I personally could care less, I enjoy the EM events, I attend them on several shards, not for items but to enjoy the hard work they put into their events.

If it wasn't for the EM's...the game would be rather stagnant right now, so for all you EM's that put so much time and dedication into this game..THANK YOU!

*OP, there's more to this game than rares*. My understanding is that THP is enjoying the world of UO. Which is why he is glad we have events. I agree with that. I've not played as long as I wish(10 years) and still find things I love to do. But Saturdays never come fast enough. My friends are there to get me into trouble during the day. Then it is time for an event. As my shard's reporter, I'll never get a drop instead I get to be part of the world EM Augustus provides. That's why I love events. Thank you so much for the UO world.

You know the funny thing about those guys..... They can't be seen by anyone using the EC. Hows that for fun? Nothing like trying to fight and invisible mob.

Being bored is more about the player than the game. People get bored because they lack imagination.

Same thing that happened prior to EM events.

People would host various events, RP or not and continue having fun with the game. EMs weren't around till about 5 years ago....not that long really and i remember before there were EMs. It was fine.

However, we are keeping all applications on file as over the next six months some Event Moderators may not be able to fulfill their duties, or may be removed for other reasons," Dec. 18, 2008. EMs didn't start until the following year in 2009 as I recall. So my guess of 5 years is pretty close as they run together now.

Since I've seen a lack of new content I personally find interesting, and most things are a continuous grind, events are the only thing that I continue to find worth while.

Not a huge fan of the current PvP system. I think if VvV is tweaked some more, that could be fun. I also haven't invested a ton of time into it, so I could be missing out.

I wouldn't play nearly as much if we didn't have events.

The drop is also an incentive - who am I kidding? Who doesn't like pixel crack?

The first EMs were removed for corruption and for putting Super-Uber items into the game without approval. That was the story I heard.
I can tell you from my experience with the old EM system there was corruption. Does anyone remember the Zessler event? Zessler built the nightmare casino, then there was an invasion, then the casino was destroy. The award for fighting the invasion was a robe with the tag Raiment of the Zessler Guard. There were many of us that participated, were there when the EM handed out the robes and got squat. He claimed to run out and then less than 5 minutes later he was at brit bank handing 10 robes to a guy that didn't participate. The guy was a known rares collector...I'll let ya'll do the math. He is looong since gone from UO he quit playing. That's my experience, and what soured me on EM events for a long time.

Couldn't have said it better. They can't craft EM events to fit every single player's preferred play style.

No matter what changes were made to EM event structures, there would then be someone else who doesn't like it and would moan and groan about any little change.

It seems like the only thing I log onto UO for anymore is the events, buying dreadmares and glacial spellbooks.

I have done just about everything in game, have enough resources to last me three lifetimes and enough gold to be comfortable. So EM events are the only thing that provide anything different or exciting for me. I am really excited to devour this new content when it gets here.

I think I have a different perspective. Ive come back to UO after several years away and find there is so much content I have never experienced. It is like a new game to me, yet it has the same nostalgic feel that has kept me coming back over the years and I am really enjoying it.

I play UO almost as if its a single player game. In the 3 months I have been back I have not interacted with another player. Im running 3 accounts (one at a time) and have at least 10 characters im working on all the time while learning and experiencing whats new. I upgraded all accounts to stygian abyss and high seas. I do appreciate this site and uo guide for all the good information. I have zero interest in pvp and frankly no interest in the collectibles.

I have never attended a player event and really dont plan to, but the great thing about UO is you are free to do whatever you find fun in the game. I enjoy soloing treasure chests and hope to take on some boss monsters and new content oneday when my character building is complete.

Perhaps a minority but I am another type of player that is out there and paying and keeping UO running.

IMO what keeps UO alive is the community... and the fact that there just isn't a decent sandbox out there to replace UO.

Most often if a game has one part from UO right it doesn't have something else.... Like it can have awesome graphics, super good content... but lacks housing... so it's not a viable alternative.

If it has housing sometimes it is VERY limited housing... like no one but you can enter.... or you can't really do anything with the house... Or the content of the game sucketh...

Or it has lots of things right... but it's a leveler game and once you reach "top" there isn't anything to do.

Or it would be awesome but the PvP is crap and there isn't any "tram" so if you weren't in the day one... you will NEVER survive.

Or it's pay to win..... and no one likes that.

Personally I think the only thing keeping UO alive is the community, the people, and the endless adventure to explore and play as you like.

PVP, EM Events, Idocs, PVM, Crafting, Home Design, Deco, Rares Collecting, Etc

The list of possibilities goes on and on.

I think what keeps UO alive is a relatively small number of die-hards that wouldn't quit the game for any reason, because of habit, nostalgia or just plain stubbornness.
