Sorry I dont know what part of the WWW you are playing on and what games you are playing?? Maybe those designed for kids under 10?? But the online PVP based games I have been playing since the early 90s have just consistently gone from poor to horrible where language is concerned.

No I play a MMO with millions of players and language is filtered, and people get banned when they do say things that are not tolerated. We have over 350 devs and our game is monitored. Plus its a B2P MMO not F2P MMO.

I figure if people really have a problem with it they can turn off gen chat...switch channels...etc.. There is a trade channel no one uses for bank sitting. Leave the gen chat for the pvpers...I dont participate on Alt...but I do occasionally on my shard.. but it can be fun to sit and follow the trash at times...and if it gets to much...I can choose to turn it off

So 75-90% of what is left on UO should cater to the 10-25% who violate the rules? It is my opinion that something is wrong with that reasoning. I don't think the people who are offended should have to leave, but instead the offenders should be made to adhere to the rules. It is called accountability. Being relatively new I go to help channel a lot to ask questions and last week when I asked "How long will gold stay on the ground before it expires at ish champ spawn" someone replied "Your mom stays on the ground until I expire her" or words to that effect. I was pretty shocked because I thought help chat was just moderators that help people. I haven't asked anymore help questions in help channel anymore but on the bright side it made me find Stratics forum website and has provided me with a better, faster, more reliable source of uo knowledge.

While Mesanna should be involved on some level, this really isn't a dev issue, its a GM issue. They (the GMs) simply need to enforce the long-posted, oft-agreed-to rules.

Hell, just appearing in game and saying "Stop that!" would go a long ways. If a GM has the time to stand there idly during the meet & greets, they really have no excuse.

Ive played many MMO's and UO is by far the worst. My current game of choice I have chat on constantly and never see any swearing or abuse. It simply wouldnt be tolerated. This is how it should be and any responsible publisher will try their utmost to ensure that their paying players, which include children, have a healthy environment in which to play. EA have neglected their responsibility.

I hear all of the time what a great 'community' UO is but the reality is very different. Its a social cesspit.

I don't allow members of my guild to use general chat for rp reasons so can't comment on what is said or how good/bad it is but I do think it contributed to the decline of in-game communities. Player towns where people interacted, people at bank and just general interaction when passing has disappeared. Sometimes I talk to people in game and I am not sure they know how to makes the words go on above their character.

I understand "why" people wanted it but general chat eliminated people actually having to interacting in game and so people hardly are around to interact with. I remember when I first saw Everquest and thought "that is such a bad idea, hope it never makes it into UO because there would be no real rp in game".

Add in vent and people play their characters in a strange anti speaking zone where there character wanders around the world doing things for days on end in complete silence.

Hoping for Messana to resolve this is also hilarious. Like she punished the griefer from the Europa meetings by banning him. Oh wait, she didn't. Locking down some deco was easier. By the looks of it she has a problem with resolving conflicts. It's a reappearing pattern: Mythic store, EA, freeshard ideas, Europa griefers, Atlantic bad mouth kids - all none of her business. But she's alsways kind enough to provide a cheap workaround as long she does not have to resolve the underlying conflict. That's totally her thing. I wish we had a real producer

Exactly. Every game is NOT like that. I play an MMO with far more players than UO and General chat is busy but none of this crap you see in UO. It just wouldnt be tolerated and people dont use it like a cesspool because they know they would get a ban. UO could do the same. I don't see this is a Play Style but general harassment , which I believe is against the TOS, but that's a different thread.

The only reason we as a community are always posting and visiting Statics is simple, We are all Passionate about playing UO which leaves me wondering how some folks don't see that this sort of behavior is very damaging to the game as a whole and why we cant foster a more civil atmosphere to keep the few players we have and retain the newer player...

And before you holler out "Just Turn it Off" Gen Chat and Help chat are a new players best friend and probably one of the 1st places they look for help, So "Just Turn it Off" doesn't Help anyone and the behavior in chat is only running players off, Vets and New Players alike.

Please save your "Its an adult rated game and grow thicker skin" Speech, however if you can honestly say to me, you believe the state of Chat isn't Hurting the game I'm all ears.

The "you ****ing suck, stay in Tram" stuff I don't mind (and, at 29, still engage in it on a regular basis), nor do I mind laughing my ass off when people with more mouth than pvp skill get their asses handed to them 1v1 (I've even posted screenshots of them dying to me when their mouth starts going.) When people bring RL/RL insults or something (other than "your mom" cracks. We're on the Internet, those will NEVER go away) similar into it, that DOES need to be policed - when a guy can tell you to kill yourself & your mother and nothing is done about it, there is a problem.

If people don't like pvp trash talk or a guy using foul language, they can turn chat off or ignore the person/people involved.

I'm very glad that you agree that Trash Talk i.e. Vulgarity and Harassment is "unfortunate".
