Where do I begin?

OK, I hate to say it, but I logged in to my new character and I'm lost! I started in Britannia next to a quest NPC who asked me to take him to Minoc. I haven't played an Ultima in years, so I'm way out of touch, but...isn't that on the other side of the continent? I tried cancelling the quest, but I got a message indicating that the quest was important. Should I look up a world map and start walking? Or, are there other things I should do to get started?

This is what I get from years in games like WoW, I'm no longer self-sufficient! :)

Thank you for any help.

Walk to the Brit gate and select Minoc, then walk the NPC to the city limits. Should earn approx. 500 gold.

LOL, OK, that sounds easy enough! Any other tips for a new player?

What's the difference between the Enhanced and Classic clients?

I'd head to New Haven, there are quests there for new players that can help to raise skills. Consider getting on general chat and asking if any active guilds are recruiting new players, often someone will at least help you out with armor and weapons and finding a folks to play with is excellent. If you do join a guild be aware that you can be killed by guildmates if they're shady. What shard are you on?

Enhanced takes a very long time to set up and alot dont like the graphics / look of it
Classic is the original 90s graphics and what most people remember

Personally, do the quests if its fun for you, but its really not a big deal if you cancel them. most are worthless and the rewards insignificant. get to training your skills and in a dungeon or just killing ettins / trolls / mongbats.

OK, I want to keep it simple to start, so I guess I'll install the Classic client. Will I miss out on anything by doing that?
Not really. The client you use is usually based on the general appearance they provide. EU does have an easy built in macro ability. You can do 10 reetitive tasks in a row. May save your self some clicks if you don't use UO assist with the classic client.

OK, thank you for the help. Just a couple more questions, and I think I'll be set!

Should I try one of the pre-made classes, or go custom? I prefer an archer type, but don't like kiting. I was told in another thread that I could be an archer that summons pets, and they would tank for me? Or a mage summoner?

Also, how do I access the general chat channel?

And, do people still group for fun killing monsters and exploring dungeons?

Ultima! I'm having a flashback to being 12 years old and playing Ultima IV!

My best suggestion is to have you try both clients and use the one that is more comfortable. The EC with Pinco's UI is far superior function wise to the old CC however some old players can't get over the way things look. Personally it's not about looks to me but function and the EC just runs better IMO.

But take yourself to Haven and do the NPC quest there for the skills you need up to 50 or 60... Then I typically go to either the desert outside Tokuno or somewhere in illsh to train up the rest of my skills... however you might try the first level of shame when you get comfortable. At any rate good luck. And if you have have questions or need help try the Gen Chat... however be prepared to be disappointed with the childish behavior of some folk there.

OK, I'm having more issues. As a trial account, I can only chat in the Help channel, not General. How do I chat in Help? I tried /help <msg>, but it didn't work!

Also, my play screen is only about 1/2 of my monitor. How do increase to full screen?

Sorry for all the questions! I'm currently using the Classic client. Am I too dumb for this game??

What shard are you on? Atlantic I would assume?

When you want to talk in whatever channel you are in, just type a comma and it will say CHAT: at the bottom left hand side of your screen. then type what you want to say and hit enter, easy as that!

In the CC, unfortunatly, you can't increase the game size window, but you can go full screen...if you do that you'll end up with a lot of black area around your game window. Most people use that area to put the paperdoll, journal, map and skills/spells they use.

The classic client only supports a limited resolution so the game window looks small on modern displays. If you can't access general chat Luna is the city that most folks hang out in, you could try going there and asking around about guilds, finding a crafter to make armor, etc.

To use the Chat, press on the comma button "," if you are in the Classic client.

OK, thanks again for the kind help. I'm on Atlantic to start. In the Enhanced Client, can you play in full screen mode? How do you chat in the Enhanced Client? I swear, I'll get the hang of this!

you can re-size your screen in the Enhanced Client and zoom in and out as well. Chatting is the same, it just looks a bit different.

And yes if you go to Luna on Atlantic there are always people there, and some are even willing to help! :) A lot of spamming and buying/selling items but you'll find people there for sure.

Great, thanks! And finally (hopefully), should I try one of the pre-made classes, or go custom? I prefer an archer type, but don't like kiting. I was told in another thread that I could be an archer that summons pets, and they would tank for me? Or a mage summoner?

Some skills are easier to raise than others, and some are "primary" while some are "support." Archery would be the main skill for an archer, determining how often you hit, while tactics and anatomy increase the damage you do with each arrow. If you're going with an archer I would start a custom template and select 50 archery. Magery and mysticism are the main casting skills with good summons, though you need to work your skills up to cast those spells. I have a mystic archer that I enjoy playing, the down side is that you have to be on foot to have a Rising Colossus (the strongest summoned creature in game). Another option would be an archer tamer, you could then have a pet tank for you, the downside here is that taming is very slow to gain. Probably best to start with 50 Archery and 50 Healing so that you can start playing and then decide what other skills to add.

Chatting in the EC in Gen Chat is easy just find the balloon symbol. Select the chat you wish .... it should be on the task bar and the bottom of your screen... though using the Escape key will bring up a box where you can find the options and User Settings.

Talking is easy also just hit enter type what you want and hit enter again.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I tried General chat on Atlantic for help, and just got a bunch of people laughing at me and insulting me. Not nearly as kind as you folks! There were only like five people chatting in General, too.

NO ORIGIN! :) lol

Kojak is kinda right though unfortunately. Even though Atlantic is the most populated, it also seems to have the most...bullies?

Every shard has it's share of idiots though, it's just a matter of ignoring the bad ones and finding the ones that are willing to help. As you can see from most of us here on Stratics, we are all very helpful and if you needed a bit more guidance in game you'd find someone to help :)

Oh boy.... ;) That's a discussion that's been going on for years. Not so much the difference but which is superior. They both have a distinct look, go with the one you like. Any other differences are minor.

Just stay on Atlantic and keep out of General Chat. Gen Chat is a train wreck.
Gen Chat is mostly children, adults who act like children, & a lot of chest thumping/e-peen throwing.

Help Chat is where you'll find the good folks of ATL & can get the best advise/help.
There is one Help Chat regular that should be muted but I'll let u figure that person out on your own,
shouldn't take you long. Even tho he makes numerous characters, once he opens his mouth its pretty easy
to spot him.

If you want to start slow & get your bearings, try one of the lower population shards suggested.
If you want a lot of players and more activity, stick to ATL & just keep out of General Chat.

Good luck and welcome back. We missed you :)

If you haven't played in a while, use the enhanced client. It is easier for people getting acquainted back into the game to use and has better general usability.

Unless you're very comfortable in the game, you should come to Atlantic shard, that's where you will find the most people and be able to get help quickest. Don't fear gen chat - there might be trash talk in there from time to time, but probably nothing you haven't heard before if you played WoW.

If you are looking for a guild and decide to come to Atlantic, you can send me a PM and I can get you into DRED. We have a teamspeak channel and always plenty of people on to help you get situated with gear, gold and tackle any other questions you have.

Hope your return goes well :)
