My accounts are Europa based and I really only play there but I do have a char on Atlantic and I went there to see the Easter Squirrel. For a long time now I have objected to the language used in Europa's General chat channel and some time ago I moved to the Help channel which is much less used by the trash talkers. While on Atlantic I thought I would take a few minutes to look round with my undeveloped mage. As I do not use the char much it was in General chat and if I thought Europa was bad, this chat was unbelievable, constant obscene language and references to mothers and the like. I did what I did on Europa and switched to the Help Channel. If it is possible that was worse. How do the normal players on Atlantic cope with this, it was just constant and unending. I have spent time in the Army and am used to that sort of vocabulary being used but for Gods sake this is a game and a game where women and children play too. The players participating obviously have no consideration for others whatsoever. This kind of behavior is a disgrace to the Atlantic shard. It is of course a disgrace on any shard but I have never seen anything like how it was tonight. There may be a time and a place for it but I feel that place is not UO. Seems to me there is a good case for GMs to check the chat channels now and then.

I'm a fan of the ignore feature... I know it's a lot to weed out people, but it's generally the same group daily. If you ignore a few people every day... in a week, you will probably have cleaned up your chat to the point where this is no longer an issue. Hope this helps you out! Luckily... this is rare on Legends, where I mostly play. I am, however, starting to play on Atlantic more and more... so I find that this helps a lot!

It surprises me that people continue to be surprised by the vulgarity of in-game chat. This kind of stuff goes on in most games. The PvP scene in UO was effectively built and sustained on trash talk even before we had a proper chat system.

I, personally, like when men try to "tone it down" around women. I consider it a sign of respect, not a sign they think we are weaker. I also, like to see women and girls behave a little "classier", and not swear like sailors. I cringe and find it overly offensive when particular words are used, namely ones that start with p and c.

I understand that not all females are the same, and not all are sensitive to it, but I definitely would not take offense to men who try to be gentlemen. There are frankly, not enough of them left. ... Don't scold the ones who are trying to be! ^_^

Indeed you do not HAVE to use the chat channel but think on this. What I am referring to is the HELP channel, the channel intended for new players and where older ones can interact with them and help them get started. What a delightful introduction to UO for newbies to see the filth spilling forth there. I am fortunate enough to play on Europa where that channel is almost exclusively used for its intended purpose and several of us are often seen talking to the new ones. I feel sorry for the players on Atlantic who have to endure it if they wish to use a feature of the game.

I was just visiting but so appalled by what I read that I felt compelled to register my disgust. Hence the original post, but I did fail to mention an upside to Atlantic I saw. The presence of a better calibre of player is evident by the books I saw on the ground entitled 'How Can We Help' I think it was. I took the time to read it and found it full of advice and help for all kinds of players from returnees to new. It was good to see and I applaud those who produced it and indeed, all who are mentioned within it..

I'm on Atlantic, if your question was serious But generally speaking I don't have much problems running into other players randomly in twisted weald, at navrey and couple of other pvm spots. Then sometimes I look for players in old haven or at new haven bank or the like. So it's fairly easy for me to ignore the banter in GC and only look out for weaving focus or people calling to raid the spawn I'm working (more often they tend to raid first ).

When returning people looks around to see if they want to start playing again. More adult this time, and sometimes thinking of starting to play with their kids. . I might have known you would be chipping in with your usual inaccurate summation. However I would point out that I am singular and not a group of people. On the same note I have never posted once on this topic on UOHall let alone every week.

As to your question, having never read a post regarding a classic shard (due to my total lack of interest) but as one does not exist it is difficult to see how it has a bearing on actual gameplay. It interesting that you regard obscene chat as drama and says a lot for your interpretation of it. I bow to your superior knowledge of the usual chat on Atlantic but as a casual visitor I must judge by what I saw, which did not fall within my interpretation of civilized, quite the opposite in fact. My conclusion was that it was uncivilised, obscene and excessive. As to your final sentence, once again it illustrates your mindset. A post has become 'these threads' and has suddenly obtained a multiple existence. Objecting to obscenity is 'over dramatising' it. Once again anyone who does not conform to your ideas are 'fools'. I see nothing about internet law or suicide, did you pluck these from the ether to prove your point? (whatever that is).

Oh Dear! here we go again, I do wish you would engage brain before posting. Where in the post is ANY suggestion of making a judgement on a complete shard?. I made a post about an aspect of the shard, a single feature, a one-off part, please absorb what is actually said not your version of it. Also if you look in a later post you will also find I praised another aspect of the shard, are you suggesting that was incorrect?. For your enlightenment I can tell you that the phrase 'take a few minutes' does not mean necessarily a few, it can mean as long as is necessary to do what you want to do.

I can make no sense at all of your second sentence or what it is supposed to mean. The real issue for me was the language being used on both channels although I suppose that does speak volumes about those using it.

If you fail to see the relevance of the other two items then I despair for you but I fail to see the relevance of icing on the cake, still, as always, your phrasing is difficult to understand.

LS isn't anywhere near as bad as Atl, trust me. I've been on both servers. I still go to Atl on occasion, if I need to buy stuff/have it moved to LS, or if I'm working a char. Every time I do either, I remember why I hate it over there.

In all honesty, only a few people are ignore-worthy on LS, which is usually quiet. It is also just as easy to get them to shut up by reminding them that they died to me when I was outnumbered (yesterday, it was a 2v1 against two archers. I killed both of them, then a 3rd archer came in & I didn't want to bother anymore - once the other two came out of stat, it was gonna be difficult for me. I killed her with ease later 2x, she agreed to fight me in the Ocllo Arena.) The best part of that: I had no pots on me. To their credit: If I weren't a parry scribe, I wouldn't have won. Even with it, I was close to dying a few times.

What annoys me more are b) the ones who have to bring up rl (whether true or not) into the trashtalk and b) the people who whine about the trash talk in gen chat. The latter group could solve their problems simply by putting people on ignore or going to a different channel.

For some reason they think it's hilarious (I guess if you're an adolescent and living with your mom). I just ignore them. It really doesn't go on all the time. Most of the time people are asking and answering game questions, and even these joker characters drop their comedy routine to answer questions to help new players. One of the guys is the one who supposedly was banned and then unbanned and we had a thread arguing about it that got deleted, and I don't want this comment deleted too, so I'll leave it at that. But it's really not that bad most of the time.

That's just it. All of the pvp'ers know one another. Some are complete morons with more mouth than sense, but it's human nature to talk **** in a competitive environment, whether we're spewing complete BS or not. People who don't pvp don't understand that. They complain about the gen chat wars...for what? Is it really that detrimental to their pvm'ing or bank sitting? If they're selling something or trying to buy something, ok. It can be annoying when the chat scrolls their messages & the other person can't see them. I will, however, stop if someone asks a question or has something I want to buy, then continue.

There are very few people in UO I won't trash talk. A lot of that is because they kick my ass HARD, but it's just as much because I respect the hell out of their ability. I'm FAR more likely to do it to specific people & whoever starts it first (morons who brag after winning a 3v1, even though I'd EASILY kill all 3 if they didn't run or hide/stealth on me.) If they keep their mouth shut after the fight is over, I will do the same. If the fight was fun as hell, I'll say so, and I've even asked when we can do it again, or if we can continue it.

I've done the same (both turning it off & telling people to leave.) They complain even more when I tell them they can leave gen chat. I've also suggested that they try spending 5-10 minutes on Atl. Lake Superior is little league compared to that.

I have just recently returned to playing after a 2 year hiatus and I have to agree, Atlantic has always been my primary shard.. and I just have to turn the chats off unless necessary..
It's a constant bather of nonsense, spam, and profanity. now I am not appalled by profanity for the most part.. I use it frequently myself, but not on a public chat or forum.. so I know that if I am offended.. there's many out there

Again, ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. Denial isn't the answer.

General chat should be a useful in-game tool, not something to be avoided because a minority use it as their personal privy. God forbid a new player (we'll pretend those exist for argument's sake) sees how prevalent the abusive language is...will they want to stay once they realize that's the norm?

The ignore list can quickly fill up once a person knows its there and how to work it. Ignoring a player, while useful, also comes with a whole host of downsides. Should they actually have something constructive to say, you'll never see it. Nor can you trade with them...not that you'd know to in the first place anyway.

If @Mesanna really cared about making UO better, more newbie friendly, she'd realize that this head in the sand approach was costing the game dearly. Not bothering to enforce the ToS/RoC we all agreed to (multiple times) has allowed this situation to escalate unchecked for years. I dont think Mes has stuck her head in the sand,... I think the powers to be have accepted the fact that this is the norm for Online gaming. Accepted it and moved on....You fight the fights that are worth fighting. This one isnt,... there are plenty of options available to those that have an issue with vocabulary used in gen chat.
