This thread is to assist in selecting a final brand name for the new Bazaaro Community social networking site.

Product

The website is a gaming social network which is focused on interaction in a group context. Groups may consist of guilds, developers, or friends. Groups include many features such as a group wall, calendar, forum, and chatroom. Users can also interact on a personal level by connecting with friends, sending personal messages, and submitting blog articles to the website.

Concept: Legions
Legions is a social gaming site dedicated to providing a friendly social environment for gamers, old and young alike. A legion is a large group of people all coming together for a common cause. Whether you just have a squad (Small group) or Army (Large group/Guild) Legions can provide you with the tools you need to be a successful social gamer.

Concept: Roots
Roots is a website dedicated to encouraging social interaction among online gamers. Roots grow deep and are entangled with each other. Intertwine yourself with our community, or grow your own!

Concept: Tribes
A variation on Tribe connects to individuals on a humanistic level. Social hierarchies in games follow similar concepts and ideologies as in the non-digital world. Adapting this idea to the site is fairly straight forward. By looking at human societies and applying various levels of organization to the site we can instill an automatic sense of social bonding in our community.

upload_2015-3-14_19-43-7.png

Concept: Swarm
The idea here is that the website operates like a swarm. In other words, we share common interest, we work together, we network, we have a collective knowledge base, we organize into hives (groups). This phenomena occurs naturally with birds, fish, inspects, and gamers. Svarma is the Swedish translation of swarm.

Tribes will get you in Legal trouble as there's a game by that name.

Legion sounds good.

I'm torn. I like the title, "Tribes"... but the graphic for "Legions" is the best.

Which of the graphics? Feedback will help us a lot, those are just concepts, but it helps knowing what people like.

The bold dark one. But with an "S" added at the end of the word. :)

im not sure on this one. didnt answer. im not saying their bad, but if i saw any of them i would have no idea it was a website about games/gaming.

edit: i picked Tribes. but i think it should be GameTribes.com. GameLegions.com makes me think if you get ulcers and sores or something from gaming.

GameLegions.com sounds great to me as it is not for one game alone. I would also like one letter being a kind of crafting tools, not all games are combat only.

Just a thought... what bothers me about the name "Legion" or "Legions" is that it sounds too exclusively Roman. o_O

What a surprise. I would have bet a months salary that the sheep would have went for the stereotypical legions. All that's missing is an ascii sword. some people have no imagination whatsoever.

Well we want something that says gaming, Legions does that right off the bat so it's the most common choice...which is why Ron provided brief descriptions of each brand idea.

I haven't seen any feed back from you Craftsman....so which of the 4 do you like, and why?

Sorry but I think you should think about SEO in regards to your brand name. What do you want people to search for when they find your site? Off the wall words may be good for some brands, I don't see gaming as one of them...la

I voted tribe. Lets look at definitions of both Legion and Tribe and see which one fits best. I;ll not bother with the other two as they verge on the ridiculous.

legion
noun

  1. 1.
a division of 3,000–6,000 men, including a complement of cavalry, in the ancient Roman army.
synonyms: brigade, regiment, battalion, company, troop, division, squadron, squad, platoon, contingent, unit, force, corps, garrison, section, group, detachment, commando, battery, band, outfit, cohort
    "a Roman legion"
  2. 2.
a vast number of people or things.
"legions of photographers and TV cameras"
synonyms: horde, host, throng, multitude, crowd, drove, mass, mob, rabble, gang, swarm, flock, herd, body, pack, score, mountain, army, sea, abundance, profusion
"there were legions of photographers and TV cameras"
We would be neither a military unit nor vast in number if we are honest.

Lets look at tribe now .... although not a perfect fit, far more apt. A community. A society. Social. Common culture and dialect.

tribe
noun

  1. 1.
a social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader.
    "indigenous Indian tribes"
    synonyms: ethnic group, people, race, nation;

It is amazing how much I have taught myself in regards to SEO and website development since creating my first site over 5 years ago. Keywords are key and I see no reason that will change anytime soon.

Determine your desired keywords and build the brand around that. If you want to be found when someone searches for "gamer forum" you had better plan your brand, url and website content around that idea. New brands can't expect fast results when they come up with brand names like Google or Yahoo. It took years of brand building before those words became part of the general lexicon...la

Only problem with that is everybody and their mother has sites named Gamer.....(insert name here) or similar.

Finding the right name for the Brand Ron wants, his vision....

A group of gamers all gathering together in one place to share ideas and play together...hence the term *Swarm*...gamers swarming together......

Roots....people, or *trees/plants* growing in different soil (games) growing their roots into one site for all...

Legions...obvious...

We've been going around in circles searching available domain names, trademarks using those terms...it's not as easy as you may think to come up with a *gamer* domain name that isn't already taken....and we're trying to be unique as well...

If we do our jobs right, it will be as common as google or yahoo :) That's our intention anyway.

Very true. Although I get it, Ron wants a new identity with the new site, but don't you think Stratics is a pretty big and broad brand to begin with? What about Stratics being the domain for the site and come up with a UO specific name for this site?

Just my 2 cents...la

That is an excellent question Rico...but think of this....lets take Twitter.....we all know what that is...so what if Twitter all of the sudden did a 180 and became a completely different site altogether?

Stratics is well known for being the go-to for anything Ultima......like Twitter, Google etc. You say Stratics and people automatically think UO...which is what we don't want for the new brand and why Ron dedicated Stratics to strictly UO so he could build an entirely new brand with a new identity.

Gotcha. I guess I've never seen Stratics as being UOcentric even though it's the only game I come here for, lol. Now get to work on making Twitter add those extra 40 characters...I want them NOW!!!...la

That runs into another set of concerns.

Since we're looking at an entirely new brand, we are trying keep it as short and memorable as possible, and at the same time getting a domain name that can also work as the sites Brand or Title.

OK... I've been taking another look at the original concepts/proposals. Although "Legion(s)" presents a better graphic, I'm not certain the word itself is the best choice and might even be a bit dated or trite (and again, too Roman). "Roots" brings to mind (for me) a book and movie of the same name, which might or might not present a problem. "Tribes" I like, but it leaves me with a feeling of an iffy and less than happy gathering. I've been looking more closely at "Svarma", and that choice is becoming more appealing. The meaning is fine. I just think a different graphic rendering would do it more justice.

I'm done. Thanks for your time. :)

In early conceptions we had talked about Swarm and the doodle I came up with was pretty cool... integrating a game controller really had it leaning toward gaming without actually saying gaming.

Using the dutch Svarma is different, and kinda cool if you ask me. If the actual logo itself is done right, it should speak for itself. If this, then you really should use a generic game-controller for the letter m.

Sorry but Legions sounds so biblical to me, can't stand the appocalyptic associations. Seems a really outdated choice. Or just totally reminiscent of the roman legion. YUK.

Tribes to me is more enclusive, earthly and more in keeping with groups of like minded people, diverse but also able to work together.

None of the above graphics are 'good', surely you can find someone who can create something 1000 times better than those choices. Even a text generator online can produce better looking logos than any of the above.

My 2 cents anyways.

I like Swarm better than Svarma. Svarma makes me think of the shawarma scene in The Avengers...

Legion(s) makes me think of those guys in Fallout New Vegas that I absolutely had to kill every single time. Hated those guys.

Don't care for Tribes at all.

Too bad Zerg would probably get you in trouble. :p

None of those names are grabby. Most of them are stuffy. I'm not saying I know better, but you're asking for feedback.

You seem to have decided that names which imply groupings are the only way (uh, okay). Call it Siege. It's coincidentally a nod to your roots. More importantly, it has a dramatic, forceful sound to it, great for gamers. If you think it sounds too negative, you're thinking too hard in the wrong direction. Does Curse.com sound too negative? If you're trying to simultaneously outdo Guildportal and Facebook for gamers, be a little more exciting (a verb that implies a grouping might work). You're in luck in this case, because both of those companies are making it easy for you, with regard to a name, anyway.

Siege.com may be for sale. It exists, but it's just a blank page. Same with Siege.net. MMOSiege.com doesn't exist.

What you should really do is hire some talent with experience in building brands. Gamers have a hard time seeing past their own interests ("that word sounds cool to me"---just read the post above mine), which are sometimes unrelated or even biased toward mass appeal ("that word evokes imagery that is universally recognizable"). Your name should be manipulative in that it should easily evoke a response---visual or otherwise. Go research the psychology behind successful branding (well, you're already right here on the Internet....).

I don't know. I just think that the stated goal of providing "a friendly social environment for gamers, old and young alike" wouldn't be effectively communicated (at least initially) by a title like Siege.

A last minute suggestion -- zwerm -- a variation on the word "swarm":

Will sit back now and wait to see what the end result will look like. Thanks for letting us post our feedback! :)
