C0-owner then friend secure chest trick?

Seems I recall a trick where you can co-own someone to your house, have them place a chest, then switch them back to friend, and only they, no other friend to the house, can get into that chest. Is there such a trick?

I'm currently giving a new player a place to stay and will setup a second room for another if the above trick will work.

why not be able to buy a special chest where you can assign specific people to have access to? seems like a no-brainer addition to our virtual reality.

Co-owners used to be able to place a strongbox by saying "I wish to place a strongbox", but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

Was it THIS?

Old news that's no longer true apparently.

It let you have multiple friends stay at your place with secure chests that only they (and you, as owner) could get into. Another friend of the house couldn't get into them.

seriously just give the new player 50-100k and let them place there own little house...theres plenty of room for small houses on any shard...problem solved

Not all want to be given much, some want to earn it themselves, like my curent guest.

I could just move Landreu back into the other room at his shop, co-own the door, and leave the house 2nd room free for a friend there.

Tanivar, I just tested this on a shard other than Siege with the following results:

  1. Character A1 from Account A owns the house. The house currently has no co owners or friends
  2. Character A1 makes character B1 from Account B a co-owner on the house.
  3. Character B1 secures a backpack on the floor in the house and makes sure the bag's security setting is set to Owner Only.
  4. Character A1 removes character B1 as a co-owner on the house.
  5. Character A1 makes character B1 a friend of the house.
  6. Character B1 can put items in the backpack and remove them , as desired.
  7. Character B1 cannot access the backpack's context menu to change security settings nor can character B1 "release" the backpack with the "I wish to release this" command. (She gets the message, "You did not lock this down, and you are not able to release this.")
  8. Character A1 makes characters B2-B5 from Account B friends of the house.
  9. Characters B2-B5 can put items in the backpack and remove them, as desired. They also cannot access the backpack's context menu or release it with a command.
  10. Character A1 makes character C1 from Account C a friend of the house.
  11. Character C1 cannot access the backpack that was secured by Character B1.
  12. Character A1 makes character C1 a co-owner of the house.
  13. Character C1 still cannot access the backpack that was secured by Character B1.

Edited to add the following steps:
  1. Character A1 makes character B1 a co-owner of the house again.
  2. Character B1 can now access the context menu of the backpack to change its security settings or retrieve it. Presumably this character can also release the backpack but I didn't specifically test that.
  3. Characters B2-B5 can also access the context menu of the backpack to change its security settings or retrieve it. They can also use the "I wish to release this" command to unsecure the backpack.
  4. Character B2 releases the backpack and then secures it again with "Owner Only" access.
  5. Character B1 is able to put things in the backpack secured by character B2. HOWEVER, character B1 cannot access the backpack's security menu to change its settings or retrieve it NOR can character B1 release the backpack that was secured by character B2.
My suspicion is that if you want to have the characters on Account B to have full functionality on the security menu for containers secured by that account, you need to secure the container with the character from Account B that is actually the co-owner on the house's security menu. Otherwise full functionality only goes to the character from Account B that actually secured the container. This isn't something you will have to worry about on Siege, however.

Better, let the owner of the chest lockdown the key on a keyring on top of chest. Now he can't get the key stolen, he only need to click on key and then on box to unlock. Let the secure on key stay owner only

So that co-owner to friend trick still works.

I hadn't ever tried securing a key on top of the box it unlocks and set the security like that. I just secured a box in the room with keys in it. Have to see what other security tricks can be done. I set the door to their room friends only. Wonder if that co-own/friend trick works with a door as well.

Could change the house to a hotel with a couple dozen rooms if we get a run of new players with the UO Steam thing and move Tanivar & Landreu back into the shop.

If someone other than the owner secures the chest and sets it to "owner only" then only that character and the house owner can open it regardless of other characters security permissions.

I'd always thought the owner only setting meant house owner, not the one who locked it down.

This 18 year old game needs a nice thick players manual :scholar: telling us all these things. :dunce:
